Today's SP "31 Days To Healthier Holidays" tip is,
"Sweat more. Some research shows that adding just 10 more minutes of intense exercise to your usual workout can stave off holiday weight gain."
SP further explains at www.sparkpeople.com/resource/nutriti on_articles.asp?id=1241 that some experts say that adding just 10 minutes of vigorous exercise to our usual workout routine can counter the effects of a little extra holiday eating. Surely we can spare an extra 10 minutes, right? Even if we can't fit it in all at once, we can try to do small amounts throughout the day. High-intensity moves like jumping jacks, high-knee running in place, or jumping rope all work. Or we can try SP's 10-mintue cardio videos at www.sparkpeople.com/resource/fitness _videos.asp to torch those extra calories in one shot.

Today's SP "31 Days To Healthier Holidays" tip is,
"Shop when full. Shopping on an empty stomach can lead to overeating on the unhealthy food court fare. Also stash some emergency healthy snacks inyour car or purse. Try nuts, whole grain crackers, and dried fruit."
Interesting tip. Of course, you should never grocery shop on an empty tummy, but I've never thought of present shopping as a healthy eating threat, but it does make sense.
hillbillywoman.blogspot.com/2008/12/ nine-tips-for-keeping-your-sanity-whil e.html makes another point as to why we shouldn't shop for presents on an empty stomach. It's harder to concentrate when you're starvin', so make sure to have a bite to eat before settin' out. Pack some granola bars or other easy go snack in case of a snack attack in the throes of shoppin'. Especially remember to keep hydrated. Those climate controlled stores can dry you out quickly.
"Christmas gift suggestions:
To your enemy, forgiveness.
To an opponent, tolerance.
To a friend, your heart.
To a customer, service.
To all, charity.
To every child, a good example.
To yourself, respect." ~ Oren Arnold, author

Today's SP "31 Days To Healthier Holidays" tip is,
"Wash your hands. The holiday season coincides with cold and flu season. Keep germs at bay by washingyour hands well after shopping, visiting and more. No one wants sickness to interferre with their fun!"
www.mayoclinic.com/health/hand-washi ng/HQ00407 tells us that frequent hand-washing is one of the best ways to avoid getting sick and spreading illness. Hand-washing requires only soap and water or an alcohol-based hand sanitizer — a cleanser that doesn't require water. Find out when and how to wash your hands properly.
WHEN TO WASH YOUR HANDS
As you touch people, surfaces and objects throughout the day, you accumulate germs on your hands. In turn, you can infect yourself with these germs by touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Although it's impossible to keep your hands germ-free, washing your hands frequently can help limit the transfer of bacteria, viruses and other microbes.
Always wash your hands before:
•Preparing food or eating
•Treating wounds, giving medicine, or caring for a sick or injured person
•Inserting or removing contact lenses
Always wash your hands after:
•Preparing food, especially raw meat or poultry
•Using the toilet or changing a diaper
•Touching an animal or animal toys, leashes, or waste
•Blowing your nose, coughing or sneezing into your hands
•Treating wounds or caring for a sick or injured person
•Handling garbage, household or garden chemicals, or anything that could be contaminated — such as a cleaning cloth or soiled shoes
In addition, wash your hands whenever they look dirty.
HOW TO WASH YOUR HANDS
It's generally best to wash your hands with soap and water. Follow these simple steps:
•Wet your hands with running water.
•Apply liquid, bar or powder soap.
•Lather well.
•Rub your hands vigorously for at least 20 seconds. Remember to scrub all surfaces, including the backs of your hands, wrists, between your fingers and under your fingernails.
•Rinse well.
•Dry your hands with a clean or disposable towel or air dryer.
•If possible, use your towel to turn off the faucet.
Keep in mind that antibacterial soap is no more effective at killing germs than is regular soap. Using antibacterial soap may even lead to the development of bacteria that are resistant to the product's antimicrobial agents — making it harder to kill these germs in the future.
HOW TO USE AN ALCOHOL-BASED HAND SANITIZER
Alcohol-based hand sanitizers, which don't require water, are an acceptable alternative when soap and water aren't available. If you choose to use a hand sanitizer, make sure the product contains at least 60 percent alcohol. Then follow these simple steps:
•Apply enough of the product to the palm of your hand to wet your hands completely.
•Rub your hands together, covering all surfaces, until your hands are dry.
Antimicrobial wipes or towelettes are another effective option. Again, look for a product that contains a high percentage of alcohol. If your hands are visibly dirty, wash with soap and water.
A SIMPLE WAY TO STAY HEALTHY
Hand-washing doesn't take much time or effort, but it offers great rewards in terms of preventing illness. Adopting this simple habit can play a major role in protecting your health!!!
"Proper handwashing with soap and water is an important barrier to many infectious diseases and promotes better health and well-being…handwashing is one of the most practical and effective ways of preventing the spread of disease." ~ World Health Organization (WHO)
"Handwashing is the single best way for parents, caregivers, and child care staff to reduce the spread of infection among children." ~ Canadian Institute of Child Health (CICH)
"Handwashing is one of the most important means of preventing the spread of infection." ~ Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
"Wash our hands! It is what our mothers always told us- and they were right. Hand washing is the most effective way of reducing the transmission of disease". ~ The Canadian Journal of Infection Control, Spring 1999 (CJIC)

Today's SP "31 Days To Healthier Holidays" tip is,
"Enjoy a pre-party snack. If you arrive famished, you're more likely to devour too much of the wrong things. Try a combination of fibre, protein and healthy fats for more filling power."
www.cbc.ca/news/health/story/2008/12 /10/f-healthyeats.html tells us to prevent overeating during the holidays, do not skip meals and arrive at an event on an empty stomach. This means eating meals at regular times throughout the day, and having a light snack between meals in order to keep blood sugar levels consistent.
This is especially true for holiday parties. To avoid overindulging, eat a light and healthy snack before leaving the house; try a handful of roasted almonds, a low-fat yogurt or a piece of fruit at least two to three hours before your meal.
Now for some "watching your diet" at Christmastime fun, here's a carol you've probably never heard before set to the tune of White Christmas from
calorielab.com/news/categories/chris tmas-carols/
Sing along to a White Christmas instrumental version at
www.youtube.com/watch?v=e7_NIeTK8tw
I’m planning on a “lite” Christmas,
The kind my doctor recommends.
“Stick to soups and salad,”
He says. “Though pallid,
You’ll be thankful in the end.”
My diet is a cruel mistress:
Most Christmas goodies are a crime.
“Nothing sweet! No butter!”
I whine, I mutter,
But since I’m huge, I toe the line.
I must be firm, despite Christmas;
My cardiologist insists.
Hope your yuletide feast’s a delight.
As for me, I’m having fish that night.
'Tis the season to be merry eh!

Today's SP "31 Days To Healthier Holidays" tip is,
"Walk more. Keep a brisk walking pace while you do your holiday shopping. Instead of wasting time loking for a closer parking spot, take a faraway one to increase your activity (and save time).
www.military.com/military-fitness/he alth/staying-fit-over-holidays tells us that each year, millions start off the holidays with a large meal on Thanksgiving, followed by several more days of leftover pies, cakes, and candies. Many gain a significant amount of weight. Some people can gain 5-7 pounds during the holiday season, though according to a University of Texas SW Medical Center, most people only gain 1-2 pounds during the season.
No matter who you are, the weight-gain cycle can easily continue throughout the winter months, and by spring you can have 5-10 lbs to lose. Hold that pace for a decade and you will have gained 50-60 lbs. This is the way weight gain occurs - slowly, over the years.
The good news: While it can take a few to several years to gain 50-60 lbs, it can only take 6-12 months to lose it. Without a lifestyle change, including daily exercise and proper food habits, the annual 1-2 lbs of weight gain can lead to obesity, which gives you a higher chance of contracting other related health problems such as hypertension, stroke, and diabetes.
One way to avoid adding holiday weight is to walk more.
When safety is not an issue, try to walk further than normal when going about your normal routine. Burning a few more calories by walking is one of the easiest ways to take off that extra weight. Just twenty minutes of brisk walking can burn over 100-150 calories. That equals a cookie or soda in calories!
Try to work off many of the stressors of the Holidays by giving yourself a present of 30 minutes to exercise or walk. You will feel better after any type of exercise compared to not having done any activity.
"People say that losing weight is no walk in the park. When I hear that I think, yeah, that's the problem." ~ Chris Adams
