Success and next generation Sparker is born.....

Friday, March 16, 2012

I fell asleep last night before I ever made it to the exercise room. Sat down to talk to hubby about the birthday party tonight and just sank in to oblivion in the middle of the conversation.

Got up this morning and decided somehow I WILL make room for exercise on my days off. Then my granddaughter woke up in a 5 year old contrary mood. We always discuss plans for the day over breakfast and she didn't like ANY of the things we need to do today. I suggested that after she finished breakfast maybe we could go exercise together. Immediately she was all smiles. She had to get in to her "exercise clothes" like Nana.

Last year in the first few months after she came to live with us I had purchased a "Smart Cycle" by Fisher Price for her. It is set up in the exercise room right next to my elliptical. Basically it is a stationary tricycle that hooks up to the TV and plays educational video games while the little one pedals away. She didn't show a lot of interest in it when we got it, I guess her attention span just was not good enough at 4.

What a difference one year makes!!!!! Little Athena was a dynamo and kept going the whole 30 minutes I was on the elliptical. I'm pretty sure if I had the stamina to keep going she would have too. I am just now getting back in to the swing of things though. Last week when I re-started my workouts I was only able to do 10 minutes the first time out, now I am up to 30. I don't know if she will manage to stay interested as I work my way back to even longer workouts but I think she might.

So in addition to our nightly reading (about an hour every night that I am not at work) we now have more special Nana and Athena time. I can't wait for the cold and depressing early spring weather to go away so we can go hiking and bike riding together too. She wants to go and get some more exercise clothes too. Going to have to go shopping for them soon.

Next generation of Sparker!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Motivation playing hide and seek.....

Thursday, March 15, 2012

I am trying desperately to get up the energy to do some exercise. Only getting a 3 hour nap after working 12 hours last night has wiped me out. I know I need to get moving, I have to get back in to shape and drop this extra weight. This is a must not only for my own health and well being but because I need to stay healthy and active to keep up with Athena.

In the year and 3 months she has been here it seems as though neither of her parents can make any significant progress in getting their lives together in order to be her parents again.
Dad has been busted for DUII and been unemployed since getting discharged from the Army due to meth addiction. Mom is off her psychiatric meds again and currently has a warrent out for her arrest for failure to appear on a DV 4 assault charge. She was supposed to appear for a 1 year follow up to report her progress on getting her psychiatric illness under control and for a review of her court ordered anger management. She never did either and has paid none of her court fees either.

Needless to say I do not expect either of them to be able to provide for her any time in the near future, though mom keeps talking baout all these grand plans to 'get her girls back". In all honesty I know she is better off by far living with us but I get very tired of the drama they cause and their complete inability to realise the damage they are doing to this sweet little girl by their continued refusal to make her a priority in their lives. I fully expect my granddaughter to be with us full time for the rest of her childhood. This means another 14 years before she graduates. This is not where I expected to be at this point in my life.

I did manage to finally post some updated pictures. Looking back at where I was before I found Sparkpeople to how I looked in some of the more recent pics (before I gained some of the weight back) should get me off my duff and in to the exercise room. The sheer exhaustion of my insane schedule is difficult to combat however. I have had about 7 hours of sleep since Tuesday at 2pm.

I need to find a job closer to home with hours that are more conducive to raising such a young child. So far everything I have found up here would end up being at about half of my current pay rate and I just can not make that work financially.

It's time for me to quit sitting here thinking of the list of "I need to do......" and just do some of it. First order of business is to get some housework done. My step daughter's 19 birthday is tomorrow and family is coming for a party. Guess I'd better get moving.

Wow. You have a lot on your plate. Don't beat yourself up for what you are not doing, b/c it sounds like you are doing a LOT already. SP is a lifestyle, as Elisa said. I find it easier when I can concentrate on one thing at a time (as far as when it comes to making changes). emoticon

Thank you both for your supportive comments. Usually I try to stay more positive but today has been rough. I did manage to cook a healthy dinner and get the carpets cleaned before my step daughter's birthday party tomorrow. Off to get in some time on the elliptical now.

Oh Wow! I agree with TUCKER.

Don't burn out. Give yourself time to rest and play. Go slowly on the weight loss. Just try to eat healthy and 'move' when you can.

Remember SP is a lifestyle.

Back again....

Wednesday, March 14, 2012

I had no idea I had not been on the site since November. Guess that means that time just flies, not necessarily that I have been having fun.

Anyway as an update as to why I have been absent for so long again. We now have full legal custody of my 5 year old granddaughter, Athena. Between getting her caught up academically and making sure she gets to her counseling appointments, trying to keep up with the house, AND working 12 hour nights I have found myself just a tad overwhelmed. During all of this some of the weight I fought so hard to lose has crept back on. I recently discovered that there may be some extenuating factors to the weight gain as well but that might be TMI for some of our members so I am going to just leave it with that.

In a nutshell I am now trying to address that underlying reason for the weight gain as well as figure out some way to get a regular exercise routine back in place. Gone are the days when I had time for 1 hour cardio sessions, that's for sure.

I'll post more later when work is not calling my name. Hope everyone is doing well.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts, it is so easy to get away from a healthy lifestyle which includes (I believe) SP. I give you major kudos for coming back given your very busy schedule. I can not imagine having been childless then all of a sudden been given a 5 year old, that in itself is reason to throw in the (getting back to a healthier lifestyle) towel. But you are being a great role model to your granddaughter and showing her that even with a busy lifestyle you can make time for yourself. You can incorporate 10 minute walks and do that three times a day for a total of 30 minutes. You will find time to get your exercise in, find it in everyday life, for me I park furthest from the grocery store or bank. I take stairs instead of the elevator if I have enough time and its not too many stairs. LOL. I wish you the best and want to let you know you are definately not alone on this journey..... emoticon

It's been a while.....

Sunday, November 27, 2011

My how time flies. I got very busy with my job change and little Athena moving in...... and then forgot my log in info for the site.
I finally sat down tonight got logged on (thank you Facebook).

For those of you who might remember me after so long I am still working night shift in an emergency room at the hospital in Portland. I got them to switch my hours slightly back in September so that my insane schedule wouldn't prevent Athena from going to school. Yes, my little granddaughter is still with us full time. She's been living here almost a year now. She is in AM Head Start and loves school. She turned 5 last month and has come so far since she came to us. She is starting to read now! Not bad considering that she didn't even know her alphabet 11 months ago!

My fitness routine has suffered with the schedule change and having a little one in the house. Most nights at work I make up for not getting in my old hour long workouts though as I averaged at least 12 miles a night walking (when my pedometer still worked). I have gained a little bit of the weight back, but I am holding steady at a healthy weight and have for many months now. I honestly think I had probably become too this at my lightest weight. I can still wear a size 4 jean and extra small scrubs so I am not too worried about the few pounds I gained back.

My entire family is eating healthier and even my hubby has lost some weight (how much I don't know because he will not get on the scale). Athena has turned into a little fruit and veggie lover!!! When she first came she didn't like eating much but mac and cheese, taco bell and pizza. Now she digs in to anything with veggies and almost always goes back for seconds on fruits and veggies both.

I honestly don't know how active I am going to be able to be on the site right now but I wanted to at least drop in for an update. I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving.

Awake for 22 hours and counting......

Thursday, January 06, 2011

I am sitting here with Athena trying desperately to stay awake. I worked last night and it was a crazy night in the emergency room. In my 12 hour shift I walked 13.15 miles before my pedometer gave out. After work I went out to my parents and picked up my granddaughter. From there it was a 1.75 hour drive to get her to daycare so I could go grocery shopping. I love her and she is a wonderful little girl but grocery shopping with ANY 4 year old after that kind of night is just not something I was prepared to face.

After shopping I picked her up from daycare because the poor thing just wanted to come home. She hasn't been here since tuesday morning because of my crazy work schedule. We went to taco bell for lunch and then she helped get all the groceries put away.

At this point I have been up for over 22 hours and I am thinking I should have asked one of the nurses to give me an IV of straight caffeine. Or that I could find some way to bottle the energy of this little whirlwind who is currently running in circles around my hula hoop in the living room. I need to stay up today so I can sleep tonight and spend the day with her tomorrow.

My last blog was about how I needed to get back on track. I am happy to say that I did just that. I brought the stationary bike out to the living room in the wee hours of Tuesday morning and rode it for a bit while I watched TV. I even did my strength training and yoga, which had been neglected even longer than my cardio had been. If you count the walking at work I am doing fairly well for fitness this week. I am hoping to last long enough today to get in an elliptical workout after Athena is in bed.

I have also been back on track for recording all my food intake. I was under for calories, carbs and protein yesterday if I remember right. Just running too much to have time to eat like I should have. No one really got lunch breaks to speak of so it was grab what you could eat between critical patients or transports to other departments. Nights is made that much harder due to the fact that there are no housekeeping or transport staff on duty so I get to pick up all those things on top of my normal job duties. Being that busy makes the shift go by quickly though.

I need to go now and check the fire and laundry. Besides I am sure that when I re-read this blog after I have some sleep I will be embarrassed at how much I rambled. emoticon

put some protein bars in your pocket when you are on the run at least you will have some protein at hand. You need to be careful and make sure you stay hydrated and eat protein that is the best thing to do when you are on the run. I know when I first got my grandson he was 3 my hubby and I both worked full time then I picked him up from daycare came home cooked dinner and by the time I got him bathed and in bed I was too exhausted to get exercise and I gained back all my weight that I had lost. I am not gonna let that happen again I am making some me time no matter what you need to destress after a hard day at work. emoticon

Having Athena tell me she has a "happy heart" now that she is living here is all it takes to make this crazy schedule completely worth it.

    Wow, you are awesome!

Granted, just reading that made me tired. That takes a lot of dedication my friend - and I know Athena will appreciate it when she's older.

Take care. emoticon

You're doing so well! I hope you managed to last and get some sleep! I'm sure when she gets old enough to understand Athena will appreciate just how much you've done for her and that will make it all worth it...

Have a great day with your little girl tomorrow!
