Inspirations

Friday, June 07, 2013

I have been thinking a lot this week about people who inspire me and this week a former student is the one. He was a super percussionist who worked with me when I directed a high school musical several years ago. After many twists and turns in his life, he discovered dancing and it seems to have become his passion, along with fitness. We have kept in touch with FB, but have not seen each other. His life is a testament to getting pushed down and getting back up to continue to follow your passion. This week I had the honor of seeing him on America's Got Talent" with his dance company. They were absolutely incredible with raves from the judges and now going on to Vegas. Through the years, he has taught me many things, not the least of which is persistence!

"Monitor and Adjust"

Thursday, June 06, 2013

After 20 years of teaching, I finally feel that I am able to be purposeful in what I ask the kids to do. I have a reason for every lesson and am able to convey that to them. I, then, feel very mindful of how the lesson went, who needs more help, etc. Believe it or not, as a new teacher I was not able to do this well. Now that I have figured this out for my professional life, I wonder why it has taken so long to connect it to my personal life? I feel very purposeful in what I now envision for my new healthy lifestyle. I have a purpose for working out. I have a purpose for eating healthy. I have a purpose for subtracting as much stress from my life as possible.

I am still working on the mindfulness part. While I have come a long way in this, even before Spark People, I realize that I still have a long way to go. To be mindful and connect it to being purposeful is difficult. My new goal is to focus on my mindfulness on what I need to continue to do relating to my purpose. As a former friend and principal still keeps telling me, "Monitor and adjust." My new motto!

At age 5 as I was learning to ride a bicycle, I overheard a conversation between my Dad and Mom. My Dad said," Babe, stop fussing. Just because you never learned to ride a bike, swim or do other things does not mean SHE can not! She CAN DO ANYTHING if she wants to and tries hard enough!"

Every time in my life since then, if I feel overwhelmed I remember I CAN DO ANYTHING. And oddly enough I have done those things. Not only did I learn to ride a bike but I did tricks as well. Like standing on seat when in motion. I learned to swim and saved my brothers life at at age 9-10 when he at age 6 was still learning to swim. I dove into the water NOT THINKING and held him up on my shoulders, off and on, as I came up for air and yelled for help. Hoping of course he was yelling for help when he was above water. Help came and we both survived. Without my self confidence and that little voice of my Dad's I might not have been able to do it.

I later went out on my own, worked and became management and a business owner later in life. Without that little voice I might not have accomplished all that I have.

So now debt free and still getting over my husbands passing in 2001, I am tackling my weight with the same little voice...

If your motto gives you the strength and tenacity to move forward--definitely USE IT!

Long and slow process!

Wednesday, June 05, 2013

Perseverance is a character trait that, in the past, I have not been on good terms with. Quick fix, on to the next thing, be done with it! I am determined to persevere when realizing that there is no quick and easy way to get healthy.

I get so tired of doing the same things and not seeing the effects as quickly as I think I should. I need to realize that it is a long haul and I need to keep working towards the goal. Keep moving in the right direction!

I tell people that this is a lifestyle change, but it's always wonderful to see and be reminded of this. That perseverance is required. Your timing is PERFECT. This weekend, I go to spend some time with my family ... Mom, Dad, Sister and her Family. They don't eat very healthy. You know the recipes. emoticon It will take perseverance to manage my lifestyle. But I truly do want to continue the changes that I've worked so hard for even while being with them and enjoying them. That's what lifestyle changes are all about ... they fit in regardless where we are.

Perfect blog for me today! THANK YOU sooooo much!!!

Love the quote! I can relate to wanting things to be done quick and not have to slog through another day, week or month of working at it the same old thing. But in the end persistence is the only thing that really gets you to where you want to be. emoticon emoticon
