Long and slow process!

Wednesday, June 05, 2013

Perseverance is a character trait that, in the past, I have not been on good terms with. Quick fix, on to the next thing, be done with it! I am determined to persevere when realizing that there is no quick and easy way to get healthy.

I get so tired of doing the same things and not seeing the effects as quickly as I think I should. I need to realize that it is a long haul and I need to keep working towards the goal. Keep moving in the right direction!

I tell people that this is a lifestyle change, but it's always wonderful to see and be reminded of this. That perseverance is required. Your timing is PERFECT. This weekend, I go to spend some time with my family ... Mom, Dad, Sister and her Family. They don't eat very healthy. You know the recipes. emoticon It will take perseverance to manage my lifestyle. But I truly do want to continue the changes that I've worked so hard for even while being with them and enjoying them. That's what lifestyle changes are all about ... they fit in regardless where we are.

Perfect blog for me today! THANK YOU sooooo much!!!

Love the quote! I can relate to wanting things to be done quick and not have to slog through another day, week or month of working at it the same old thing. But in the end persistence is the only thing that really gets you to where you want to be. emoticon emoticon

Different Mindset

Sunday, June 02, 2013

Talk about non-scale victories and not even realizing it! Since April, when i really started this journey, i decided that i had to balance my life better. As a teacher, as many of you know, your work is never done. my room needs to be organized before tomorrow morning, I just thought of a new way to reinforce this concept, so I have to stay and get the materials ready, etc, etc, etc. I absolutely hate to work out in the mornings, so I already knew that was not going to happen. That leaves after work. Oh, my, as someone who would stay until 6 or 7 at night sometimes, this was certainly a dilemma. To make matters worse, 3 weeks until school is out is an especially busy time. I realized that since April, with very few exceptions, I met my goal of leaving before 4 and coming home to work out Prior to this year, I looked forward to "after school was out, I could work out" mentality. I am happy to say, that this never crossed my mind for June. I am going to continue that goal and figure it out some other way. This whole mindset has left me less concerned because the summer promises less time for me anyways. The day after school lets out we leave for a vacation to both Florida and then to Colorado to visit my son, then 4th of July, then hosting a shower for my niece, then curriculum work, then teaching summer school, then a few days in DC for my niece's wedding Labor Day weekend, then back to school. My dream of all the time in the world has disappeared. I will figure this out, one step at a time, but for now, I have my plan for my first challenge in place!

Flexibility and good planning are both helpful. YOU can make this work for you. Have a plan for your trips - think about ways to make healthy eating and exercise work for you and still allow yourself to enjoy your family and have a fun time. A lot of restaurants have nutrition information available on-line. A lot of exercise can be done wherever you are - walking, swimming, playing, etc. Make a plan and even if you don't stick to it perfectly, you will find it helps keep you from going too far overboard. Have fun and enjoy yourself.

Many Hats

Saturday, June 01, 2013

Today's blog is devoted to teaching. Many of you know that I teach first grade in a relatively small rural community, the same one that I live in. In the past five years, the population of our town has drastically changed. To make a long story fairly short, while my class was across the street at the local museum, our school went into a shelter in place. Am employee who was outside at the time walked over to tell me to keep the kids there. About 15 minutes later the school resource officer came and told me that he was going to escort our class back to the school immediately. Right next door to our museum is an awful apartment building and when we came out, I noticed my friend, who is a detective, on the porch of this building with a couple of other officers. Come to find out, they had just gotten a search warrant and were making a pot bust. I got thinking later that, first of all, many teachers deal with worse things on a daily basis, but it has never hit me in the face like that. Teaching is so much more than teaching!

I only had to deal with this for one day. Several of our kids live in that building, just as one of our first graders lived in a meth lab. It is now the weekend! emoticon

Many think about all the hardships the students in poor, inner-city schools face. Don't get me wrong, they have some problems that I couldn't imagine having to deal with, but at the same time, many forget or don't know about the issues that poor, rural communities face. I love the quote "When children have great parents,it makes our jobs easier. When they don't, it makes our jobs more important." I don't think that was the direct quote, but you get the idea. Glad those little ones have someone like you that cares :-) Happy Weekend!

As a 4k teacher in a rural, low income, and diverse population I can't believe what our students have to deal with daily. Physical abuse, sexual abuse, verbal abuse, drugs, etc. and we are expecting them to pick up what we are teaching while they are wondering if they will even have anything to eat for supper! It's truly sad and I wish I could change so many things!
