Change is in the Air

Wednesday, February 13, 2013

I am officially a Starfish in the Winter 5% challenge. Even before the event has begun I am experiencing many changes. My attitude, my body, my schedule. It's exciting, yet a bit scarey at times.

I'll be reorganizing my thoughts and habits over the next several days as well as my sparkpage. I'll be meeting many new sparkers. I only recognized one name on the team.

I'm predicting a happy future full of challenge and surpise.

So-So Weekend

Sunday, February 10, 2013

I don't know what's happening. I went back to sleep after exercise yesterday and slept 5 hours. Today, same thing only 3 hours. I just can't seem to get energized.

I ate so-so, kind of wierd. not unhealthy, just weird. Tomorrow, back to tracking both exercise and food intake. The scale finally budged telling me I was 4 lbs down. I don't beleive that. Just goes to show that's not a very reliable tool in this journey, but instead a guidepost.

Have a sparkling week everyone!

Cabin fever? Go with it and rest! Sometimes, our bodies know what they need!

Not having energy is a bummer. But you did the right thing allowing yourself the rest. However if you keep feeling that way you might need to go to the doctor.

Sometimes our bodies need extra rest and it's good that you listened to it. You could be fighting a bug, had a long week, or just plain needed some sleep. Hope you're feeling more energetic today!

Winter Challenge Assignment #4

Thursday, February 07, 2013

1. List ALL your trigger foods. Is it a snack food or part of a meal? Are they sweet or salty? Hot, cold or room temperature? Carbs, comfort foods?

Sometimes after a meal I'll crave chocolate. If there is only cheap chocolate in the house I have to fight not to eat it at all. If it's quality chocolate I can plan to eat a square (usually about 1/4 of a serving) and be content.

2. What are the sources of the Triggers Foods? Is it a fast food restaurant? Drive thru? Food you order in? Grocery store? Convenience store? Meals at family or friends? Co-workers birthday cake? Treats from others?

As long as I eat a little something at strategic times I don't have trigger foods. Example: I eat a banana before shopping, or half a pb and banana sandwich.

I avoid buffets because I have the "must get my money's worth" mentality. Not to mention I reason "I'd never have this at home".

3. Describe the most common situations where you reach for the trigger foods or snacks. What room are you in, what time is it, what are you doing, who is with you, and how do you feel? Are you tired? Are you eating to feel better? Are you rewarding yourself? Soothing yourself? Are you bored? By getting the food how does it make what you are doing better? What should you be doing at that time?

I have noticed that I now want to eat more in the morning. But then again, that's my active time of day. I do have to be careful not to eat out of boredom.

4. Do you see a pattern? What types of foods are you reaching for? Does convenient access make a difference? How can you better handle the situations to avoid the triggers and not binge or eat more than you should.

One thing about where I live. The nearest fast or take out food is over 20 miles away. There is no delivery service, either. I do not have quick food on hand. If I want something I have to start from scratch. Even if I do give in and make something, by the time it's ready I don't want it anymore

Leftovers are packed up for hubby's lunch or go straight to the freezer to avoid temptation.

When I go to town I always pack snacks & a huge cup of water. Cheese sticks, a treat of grahm and pb, a bran muffin, banana, animal crackers or goldfish. Maybe a fiber bar. If I forget I try to grab a yogurt & spoon at the grocery store. My body is trained now that having the hunger horrors doesn't equal junk food. In fact, junk food usually just makes me quesy.

OH MY GOSH! THERE ARE SO MANY I WOULDN'T KNOW WHERE TO START. I JUST LOVE FOOD - PERIOD. I'M NOT SURE THERE IS ONE PARTICULAR TRIGGER FOR ME. I DO KNOW THAT I CANNOT EAT A CHIP WITH DIP. I HAVE TO EAT THE ENTIRE BAG AND A WHOLE CARTON OF DIP. SO I JUST DON'T EVER BUY OR MAKE IT - NOT EVEN FOR DH. THIS OWL IS SO DARN CUTE. I HAD TO LOOK AT IT TWICE BEFORE I REALIZED IT WAS MADE OF FOOD.

Great list. I can relate to staying away from all-you-can-eat buffets. Getting our money's worth is not worth it after all.

Winter Challenge Assignment #3

Wednesday, February 06, 2013

Note: Assignment #2 was updating my spark page. emoticon

Assignment #3.
Part One: List all the reasons you want to lose weight.

I want to improve my health. That's priority. Being overweight decreases the body's ability to absorb vitamin D, puts stress on the heart, puts stress on the wallet in the form of doc visits and meds. That's off the top of my head.

Looking & feeling better is great on my outlook and confidence. When I go to grandson's hs graduation in June my family will see the positive changes in me just in a year. They knew I was working hard at my goals. It is going to be an awesome feeling to show them I had succeeded. My dd is working at goals, too, almost ready to graduate college. We'll be positive proof that persistence and goal setting pay off.

Part 2. What do you want to change? How do you want to look? How do you want to feel? What things will you be able to do in the future with a slimmer healthier body? And list all the OTHER things that you want to change!

I have increased my strength training sessions to every other day. I sometimes come short of this goal. One change I want to make is being consistent in this area.

When I'm slimmer and healthier I will have more endurance. One goal is to be able to enjoy Cheyenne Mountain Zoo. This zoo is on a mountain, as the name implies, at over 6,000 feet. That makes it harder to breathe. When the 8 week challenge is over my reward will be to go up there for an entire day.

Assignment #3 complete!
