When I joined SP in May 2011 I thought I was eating pretty well. After all, I had switched to many whole grains, was using healthy fats , and had cut down on sugar.
It started with tracking food - every food I ate or drank. It became a game to me to input the nutrition info on labels for everything in my cupboard. Without realizing I was doing it, I began to use portion control by actually measuring out the serving size. What a shocker on some foods.
I wasn't pleased with my weight progress. The doc said it could be my genes or meds. He advised me to keep doing what I was doing - exercise and healthy diet.
About then I realized that there were other nutrients to track. I added fiber, fats, sugars, cholesterol, and sodium to my list. Whoa! Things started moving in the right direction. I found I needed to add healthy fats - I was so low it wasn't funny. I discovered I was wayyyyy over on sodium and cholesterol. Sugars, not so bad, but good info to know.
My weight loss is now at a steady rate - one or two pounds a week. My energy is great most of the time. A year ago I spent alot of time in bed for days at a time. We blamed the fibro, but the good eating has had a remarkable effect.
Changes in tastes have come about. For me to eat a fast-food burger turns into a nightmare within an hour. Deep fried foods - just the thought bothers my stomach. Creamy things- I've turned to yogurt based sauces or low-fat sour cream. Mayo is another condiment I don't care for anymore.
My newest kick is hot and spicy. Hubby is calling me a hot head now, because I'm loving to put hot peppers, hot sauce, wasabi, tumeric, curry, etc onto almost everything. Meals are bland to me now if they're not spiced up.
The things that aren't spiced up are now jazzed up with ginger, cinnamon or nutmeg. I add chia or sesame seeds to many things.
What a year!
