Changes in Eating Habits Since Joining SP

Thursday, May 17, 2012

When I joined SP in May 2011 I thought I was eating pretty well. After all, I had switched to many whole grains, was using healthy fats , and had cut down on sugar.

It started with tracking food - every food I ate or drank. It became a game to me to input the nutrition info on labels for everything in my cupboard. Without realizing I was doing it, I began to use portion control by actually measuring out the serving size. emoticon What a shocker on some foods.

I wasn't pleased with my weight progress. The doc said it could be my genes or meds. He advised me to keep doing what I was doing - exercise and healthy diet.

About then I realized that there were other nutrients to track. I added fiber, fats, sugars, cholesterol, and sodium to my list. Whoa! Things started moving in the right direction. I found I needed to add healthy fats - I was so low it wasn't funny. I discovered I was wayyyyy over on sodium and cholesterol. Sugars, not so bad, but good info to know.

My weight loss is now at a steady rate - one or two pounds a week. My energy is great most of the time. A year ago I spent alot of time in bed for days at a time. We blamed the fibro, but the good eating has had a remarkable effect.

Changes in tastes have come about. For me to eat a fast-food burger turns into a nightmare within an hour. Deep fried foods - just the thought bothers my stomach. Creamy things- I've turned to yogurt based sauces or low-fat sour cream. Mayo is another condiment I don't care for anymore.

My newest kick is hot and spicy. Hubby is calling me a hot head now, because I'm loving to put hot peppers, hot sauce, wasabi, tumeric, curry, etc onto almost everything. Meals are bland to me now if they're not spiced up.

The things that aren't spiced up are now jazzed up with ginger, cinnamon or nutmeg. I add chia or sesame seeds to many things.

What a year!

Ooh, I really need to start measuring acurately. I bet that is a huge problem of mine is under guessing sizes.

You are doing fabulous. Way to go on getting on track and staying there. I too have issues with sodium. Its amazing how high the content is in a lot of foods.

Awesome. Thank you for sharing some of the steps on your journey and the lessons you have learned along the way. Learning how to eat better is a challenge, but I liked how you saw it as a game. That was a neat way of looking at it. Thanks for sharing this, gives me an idea for a better mindset, when the temptation to see things negitive comes to mind.

That's so great that you have figured out what works for you. That is one of the hardest things to do because we are all different and what works for me may not work for you. I have learned many of the same things as you though. You're doing so great and I'm proud of you! So glad I got you to join SP!!

Amazing how your body changes so much when you get rid of all the garbage we were never meant to eat. When I changed from dieting to a nutrition plan I was amazed at how foods started tasting. I actually enjoy what I am eating now because I can taste it better! And you are right...things like fast foods...even the smell of it makes me queasy!

We walked into a burger place the other day & the smell of the grease almost made me ill! My guy loves Wendy's..I will eat their salads while he munches on a double burger slathered with "stuff" & cheese! I used to munch right along with him..no more..
Salmon tonite with fresh asparagus & a crisp salad..yes!!

Week 7, Day 7 Spring 5% Challenge

Friday, May 04, 2012

Each week seems to be easier than the last. It's a rhythm that gets going and one doesn't dare stop it. I got tested this week being w/o a working computer. I passed! I stayed on track making this a perfect week in the nutrition department.

I've been mixing up exercise this week out of neccesity. A fibro flare caused me to have to exercise in several bits a day as opposed to one or two higher intensity sessions. That's all for the good. I didn't always hit 60 minutes but that's ok. There was a time I would have just stayed in bed and neglected exercise.

Of course I'll continue to track and monitor my progress. Calories are easy enough to guesstimate at this point, but tracking sodium, cholesterol and calcium are vital to my particular situation and I NEED that tracker.

Proud moments: putting on a pair of jeans that fell to my hips; putting on a blouse that is too big for me, and best, having hubby say I'm getting skinny.

emoticon I'm on my way! Weigh in tomorrow morning.

UPDATE WEIGH-IN TOTAL POUNDS LOST: 8 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

great news!! yep isn't it the best feeling to pull out a pair of jeans that you could not fit into & then find ...they are too big!! wow!!
as to the exercise..all articles I have read seem to say that short times or all in one burst still count the same .. it is total time spent & often the smaller periods of exercise scattered thru the day seem to be best as it keeps the metabolism high longer. That is always good news!

Somehow I'm Doing It

Thursday, May 03, 2012

This week is turning out anything but how I planned it. Yesterday I floundered around without my computer. No computer, no tracking til the problem was solved late last night. My schedule was off track too which meant so were my meals and snacks. I told myself I just had to stick by the principals I've been learning and not fret if I was off for the day.

It amazed me that when I finally did get to track I was right where I needed to be! It was a good test. I was able to keep up with my 5% challenge and most of my Aspire & Inspire challenge.

Today I tried on a pair of jeans that were in the bottom of the drawer. They are heavy, made to last. They bother my skin so I don't wear them often. Today I put them on and they fell right down to my hips! I tried on a shirt I had bought last fall. It used to be tight around the bust. Notice I said "used to be". It fit! In fact, it's big and looks clunky, so I'll have to use it more as a light summer jacket with a tank or something under it.

The best part. Hubby looked at me tonight and said I was getting skinny. He noticed!

May 2012 Goals

Tuesday, May 01, 2012

emoticon MAY 2012 GOALS emoticon

1. Get Out of My Comfort Zone

Why? To grow as a person. To learn new skills. To build confidence in myself.

How? Today I am going to find a class I can attend once a week (I have transportation restrictions).

2. Challenge Myself Physically

Why? Because the more I can do, the less frequent and intense the flares of fibromyalgia. Becuase the more I can do, the better chances I have of keeping the osteopenia at bay

To keep myself from giving in to the days the fibro monster visits.

How? Following a strength-training plan, devoting 3 sessions a week to it. Walking 10 miles per week minimum. Exercise 65 - 70 minutes per day 6 days per week.

3. Continue following Nutrition Plan - It's working!

I need to adopt your first goal of moving out of my comfort zone! I'm going to give it some thought and come up with a few things I can put my energy and efforts into.
I have a "bad leg/knee" from an accident and often end up in pain when I exercise. I've found that I can walk with minimal pain but that standing and exercising puts too much stress on my shattered kneecap. Instead, I rely a lot on seated exercise DVDs. There are some good ones that really give you a workout, both aerobic and strength. Have you ever tried any of them? Are you on the Chair Exercise Team? I get some good ideas there.
Stay focused and determined!
Sheila
