BCPC Dawn to Dusk Paddle

So, on Saturday I've commited to participating with my dragonboat team, Team Velocity of Bridge City Paddling Club, to raise money for Blue Planet Network's efforts to provide clean drinking water for life to people in developing countries.


This is going to be a mammoth effort by everyone on my team, plus many other Portland paddling folks, to man boats continuiously from 8am to 8pm in making laps around Ross Island, covering an estimated distance of 75 miles and completing approximately 864,000 strokes! While I am looking forward to the endurance / cardio challenge of participating, the forecast of 94 degrees F and sunny is a little daunting. Proper hydration is going to be key to not getting sunstroke. That, and lots and lots of sunscreen.

So I'm conserving my energy today and tomorrow in preparation for taking part in this marathon paddle. Think good thoughts for me and if you're so inclined, donate the $30 it takes to provide clean drinking water to one person for life.

That race requires a lot of stamina to cover a 75-mile distance. You go Dragonboat!

New goal I need to publicly commit to....

So some of my teammates from my dragonboat team are participating in an upcoming Relay for Life event. I participated with the team last year, but as I had done the 5k portion of a triathalon with other teammates the same morning, I was very tired (and out of shape!) so I didn't stay for the whole thing, or meet any of my goals for taking part in the event.

I want to participate this year and actually stay for the whole time, as well as meet a mileage goal. One of my teammates in particular has pledged to walk a marathon distance during the time we're there. Ever since I heard her talking about it, I've had it in the back of my mind that I could do a half-marathon distance. Granted, I have not been training for this at all like I should have been, but I feel like if I take breaks and stretch, 13 miles over the course of an afternoon/all night is really not that much.

So, I am going to publicly commit to completing a half-marathon distance (13miles) during the Gresham, OR July 31st Relay for Life event.

If you so desire, I would love to have your support - I'll be walking in honor of my grandmother, Eleanor, who passed away 10 years ago from lung cancer. Cancer has touched many of my patients lives as well, so I'll also be walking in their honor.

    That's awesome. Next Friday is our Relay for Life (I just wrote a blog about it - One Size Fits All). I committed in that blog to run 10 of my laps (not all at once of course but through the course of the night). I'm sorry you lost your grandma to this horrible disease. On another note, I have family friends who participate in the Gresham Relay.

I am still smiling! I went to the mall after work today to look for some new pants for work. This girl just fit in to size 6 jeans :D This is a first of my adult life! EEEEIIIIIII! *heehe*

And this is even after not having a fantastic week work out wise and re-doing my measurements this morning which didn't show that I was down that much from last month.

I have been much more relaxed in my eating this week also. I felt a shift at the beginning of the week and just decided to stop worrying about every little thing I eat. I read a great quote on Monday that was talking about hawks, which I consider to be a powerful animal in my life. I try to learn what I can from nature and apply it to my circumstances as best I can. Basically, the quote said a hawk doesn't worry about not being a hawk. It just is a hawk. It doesn't worry about being hungry. It just works that much harder for its prey the next time. It totally clicked for me and I've been less frustrated with food choices since paying attention to this idea. I don't need to worry about the next time I'm going to eat. It will happen and I just need to do my work in between to get there.

Ahhhhhh! What a great way to end a busy busy week.

Milestone 2 Met!

I met my second milestone goal today! I am so excited to prove to myself that my eating and exercise habits are showing true results, as well as being enjoyable in terms of cuisine and mood.

I had been planning to schedule my facial for next week, but as I was already downtown today for other appointments, I called and was able to get in right away. It was blissful!! I felt so pampered and relaxed, and my skin is now as glowing and beautiful as I feel on the inside. As an extra bonus, I treated myself to a hair wash and style. I asked my stylist to blow dry my hair curly, something I almost never do for myself as it takes a long time with all this hair I seem to be blessed with. It looks (and smells - yum, Aveda products!) amazing! I texted my DH to tell him about my joyous day in the sunshine and now he wants to take me out to dinner and drinks to celebrate :) I have enough calories banked from all my activity today to do this without worrying about it. It was a pleasure to walk everywhere today and it's now going to be a help for going out later. I love my life and the positive changes I'm making in it.
