4 month Sparkversary...a few brief thoughts

Friday, November 26, 2010

I haven't had time to sit down and reflect on the progress since joining SparkPeople, and being away from home I don't have all my journals to look back on. But I DO KNOW:
-I've lost 15 lb and have made progress I've not made in years before SP
-I've gotten to "overweight instead of obese" status and need to put some distance between me and 174 lb!
-I've reached the goal of completing my first half marathon (yay!) and yesterday went out and ran 8K "without having to think about it." That's major, y'all!
-I love water! Turn my nose up at soda.
-I am STILL trying to quit being a night owl, but it will happen...
-I've met some of the most supportive and inspirational people on THE PLANET!!!
That's YOU - SparkFriends!
-I won't stop until I reach my goals... and I am certain to enjoy the journey!
emoticon plus emoticon = 4 months Spark-ing!

What a great blog, so full of positivity! You are doing so well, and I know beyond a doubt that you will continue to reach more milestones because you are focusing on the achievements you have along the way. It's all to easy to give up because you don't feel you're getting anywhere when all you measure your success by is whether or not you've reached that goal weight.

Your blog will certainly remind all of us of the importance of realizing each small milestone along the way, not just weight, but all the small but important ways we change our lives. Thank you for such a wonderful blog! emoticon

Congrats! You and I are almost exactly the same Spark age, I think, I keep missing my -versaries! I've definitely found I've made progress these last few months that I hadn't ever made before, except by using Jenny Craig, which was temporary (and expensive, and a waste of time and lots of other things!).

Way to go, Sparkfriend!!!!

Be the person you really are (inspirational quote from TBL)

Wednesday, November 24, 2010

Quote from Bernie, the Season 5 at-home winner of the Biggest Loser on NBC:
"The Biggest Loser really prepares you not just to shed the weight
but to uncover the person that you really are,
that you've always wanted to be."

I wish the same for each of you!

The Daily Motivator for today 11/20/2010

Saturday, November 20, 2010

I had greatday.com as my home page (before SparkPeople),
and the affirmation for today, Saturday, really spoke to me.
You can read it and apply it as well by going to the website
and searching for November 20 feature titled "Build a Future."
It reminds us that TAKING ACTION is the only way to reach our goals,
and even if we make mistakes we can learn from them.
Never be afraid to start.
You are MORE than WORTH IT!!!

"Just 10" bracelet - additional tips from the experts

Wednesday, November 17, 2010

As promised, blog 2 of 2 on the "Just 10" bracelet.
So on the show Dr. Oz encourages anyone who is overweight to lose "just 10 pounds" he had a group of other doctors and experts who each gave one "rule" to help us take off the pounds. Here are their recommendations:

1. Cut out soda - period.
It contains caffeine, high fructose corn syrup, 10 teaspoons of sugar per 12 oz, increases the risk of obesity, diabetes, weak bones and tooth decay.
emoticon emoticon
2. Stop eating at least 3 hours before bed -
rather than quibble with this one, I'll just remind everyone that sleep is necessary, you won't snack if you're already asleep, and how important it is to start the day with a healthy breakfast. emoticon
3. Move for 10 minutes each day -
obviously taking SparkGuy's advice! emoticon
4. Exercise portion control - know what a serving is and
don't eat any snack larger than the size of your fist.
Change your flatware - eat off small plates.
5. Weigh yourself every day -
again, not to argue... this is simply a way of being accountable.

Other suggestions include
* Take a Vitamin B Complex every day -
to help metabolism and give you energy to exercise.
Along with this, make sure you get enough fiber.
* Take your vitamins...and calcium, magnesium, Vitamin D3 and DHA.
* Recipe reinvention - cook at home, make lower calorie versions.
* Conquer your cravings.

For a family of 7 sisters he had the following list:
***Eat 7 colorful fruits and vegetables a day.
***Substitute healthier foods in recipes
(spaghetti squash, ground turkey instead of spaghetti and meatballs, for example).
***Snack smart.
***Be prepared with pre-made foods - cook in bulk.
***Switch up your workout.
***Step up your workouts with interval training.
***Start your day by stretching.

All of these can be found at www.doctoroz.com
You can also order your "Just 10" bracelet free!

So have any of these suggestions made a difference for you?

The "Just 10" idea is very good. I recently had a patient come in who said their MD had asked them to lose just 10 pounds...and he did. Then, she asked him to lose another 10 lbs...and he did. It's amazing that taking this goal of weight loss in small do-able amounts really helps. Seems so simple...some of the most effective things are very simple. Very cool. Thanks for sharing! Keep sparking! emoticon emoticon

I can't weigh daily, not a good thing for me.
The not eating for 3 hours before bed doesn't work for me either, but if it works for others then that is great.

Thanks for the tips.

Answering questions on my JUST 10 BRACELET

Tuesday, November 16, 2010

Received my "Just 10" bracelet that was featured on the Dr. Oz show (it's free!) thanks to Zappos.
Several people have asked about it, so I figured this would be an easy blog topic.

If we lose JUST TEN POUNDS we can make a significant impact on our overall health.
And if we lose 10% of our body weight (for those that are overweight or obese), the statistics show an improvement in several diseases or risks of developing them.

So here's Dr. Oz's list of 10 benefits to losing 10 lbs:
1. Lower cholesterol level (LDL and total by 10%)
2. Lower blood pressure (protects heart and kidneys).
3. Reduce the risk for heart attacks by more than 50%.
4. Reduce the risk for dementia (and stroke).
5. Reduce the risk of sleep apnea.
6. Reduce joint pain.
Each extra pound of weight adds 3 times that pressure on your knees;
walking up stairs multiplies it by 7. That's 30 and 70 pounds for each 10 lbs!
7. Reduce risk of (certain types of) cancer (including breast cancer).
8. Reduce your risk of diabetes by 60%.
9. Improve your sex life.
10. Take less medication. (Save money AND reduce complications)
Bonus: You'll feel better because your liver will be able to get rid of toxins.

You can find this information at www.doctoroz.com
Order your own free bracelet by going to

Wednesday I will post a blog with the top recommendations his panel of experts suggested to lose the 10 lbs.
