Day of Mindfulness

Saturday, May 21, 2011

As part of my class at Duke Integrative Medicine, we spent the day in silence (9am-4pm), meditation, and yoga practice, with some time for mindful eating at lunch and mindful walking meditation during the afternoon. It was a beautiful day and the space we occupied had skylights that were pleasant. It was quite peaceful. Some people were alumni of the course who have been returning for years. I am not sure how it will end up affecting me, but I now realize I can live without the radio on during the day and how wonderful it can be to get outside and experience all the things that are happening under our noses.
Hope you had a beautiful, peaceful day as well!

That sounds so great :) It's amazing how many implications the word "mindful" has...as I was reading your blog it kept coming up and I kept thinking, how nice it would be to just be mindful of what I eat/do? Sounds like something I'd like to explore :) Glad you had a great day, and thanks for this blog!

Oh that sounds wonderful. I'm making time for a little more meditation in my life and am so much less stressed. Good energy just seems to flow.

I need to do this much more often - with 2 kids, it's not easy to have peace & quiet!

Mindfulness is simple, but not necessarily easy, especially in our frenetic Western society! The day has already had an important impact on you if you've learned that you don't need the radio on all day! emoticon

I love the idea and a day of peace and silence would be wonderful. You are fortunate to live close to the facility.

I had a peaceful day. Did some yard work, went for a run, sat in the late afternoon sun. It was lovely.

I pretty much stopped watching tv a while back and hate when someone in the house turns it on.

Glad to hear you enjoyed your day.

Light bulb moment...

Friday, May 20, 2011

emoticon OK, OK, I have finally realized this truth:
The answers are not in my scale emoticon
They are in my running shoes emoticon
They are in my tai chi classes emoticon
They are in the foods I add to the grocery list and the ones I leave in the store emoticon
They are in getting adequate sleep at night (and no late night snacking) emoticon
They are in having a vision of myself - active, fit, healthy, and happy! emoticon
The answers to the life I want are in the doing, not the hoping...
A little progress every day... emoticon
A smaller waistline as a reward emoticon emoticon

Time to get a move on! emoticon emoticon emoticon

getting over cold, hope to be off all OTC medicines by tomorrow.
Mowed the lawn, did a little gardening, and attended tai chi practice - loads of fitness minutes!
Could have eaten better - need to get veggies and fruit, and plan meals for the week.
Next focus should be doing regular weight training. emoticon

God bless & feel better!

I need to do more weights, too. I have about 3 upper body machines that I know how to use in the main gym, and I go to the building across the parking lot that has those Curves-like circuit training machines, but I don't think they challenge me enough.

Acupuncture #3

Wednesday, May 18, 2011

Ahhh...I can get used to this!
Third acupuncture session was this afternoon. I've gotten used to the routine -
lay on the padded table, have my pulses checked, and the needles placed. Listen to lovely ambient music while taking slow deep breaths. Eye mask in place. Feel at peace. Meditate. Enjoy not having to be anywhere or do anything. Imagine the chi freely flowing through all the body's meridians and good health in each organ, balanced flow and harmony.
Since I'm still getting over my cold, she placed menthol on my chest. I could breathe through my nose, no problem, no snoring (unlike the person on the neighboring table who was chugging along at twenty times a minute. Sending them loving kindness meditations... )
Previously I would heat up to sweating at least twice during that amount of time - that has improved! I look forward to my sessions. The herbs given for daily use (as a tea) don't have a flavor or odor, so that has been no problem.
We'll see how the next month goes. I may be able to get through the night without having to change nightgowns!

I've been having acupuncture treatments for over 25 year and I LOVE it! When I was still having periods, treatments took away all the pain. That's no longer a problem (getting old does have some advantages!), but I still have treatments to keep myself "tuned up". After my cancer, I had severe nerve damage and, paired with a wonderful massage therapist, my acupuncturist has almost totally restored all the feeling that was numb in my face, neck and shoulder. Two weeks ago I went to my regular doctor with a pounding sensation in my chest that had been going on, day and night, for nearly two weeks. He did an EKG and said he couldn't find any problems with my heart. Next day I had a regularly scheduled appointment for acupuncture. After taking my pulses, my acupuncturist said, "No liver chi getting to your heart." One treatment and Boom! No more pounding, all my energy returned and I've slept like a baby ever since. As you can tell, I'm a believer!

Enjoy your treatments! The real benefits take time to develop, but you'll find you'll feel better and better!

Your blog title caught my eye; I too am a believer in acupuncture! I go for arthritis in my neck. What an improvement! I can actually swivel my head without pain! I am now on monthly treatments and I'm totally in love with my acupuncturist. She is the best! A true godsend! Glad to know that it's working for you as well! Continued success!

finally able to breathe again...

Tuesday, May 17, 2011

After being sick since the weekend, I can finally breathe out of my nose again and hope to be back to exercising tomorrow. It's a good sign that I missed working out! And it was eye-opening to realize how easy it is to revert to comfort foods when we are ill.
Having healthy options in the house at all times really helps reduce the cravings and falling off the wagon...
