Schedule it on the calendar...

Thursday, January 20, 2011

Less than 60 days to my second ever half marathon - Tobacco Road on 3/20 -
and that's AFTER a 5K 2/26 and a super sprint triathlon (the REALLY REALLY SHORT distances) on 3/12.

So to simplify my life and preparation, I pulled out the calendar and made the training schedule in broad strokes.
Sunday - brick workout (cycle then run, to simulate the triathlon transition).
I like to bike on Sundays because that has the least traffic and is therefore the safest day in my area.
emoticon emoticon emoticon
Monday - my weekly fitness assessment on my elliptical, otherwise a recovery day from weekend workouts. May swim.
Tuesday - Personal training day. Volunteer with youth basketball.
emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon
Wednesday - morning workout, evening tai chi.
emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon
Thursday - Intervals. Volunteer with youth basketball.
emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon
Friday - rest/stretch (and carbo load)
emoticon emoticon
Saturday - Run or Event
emoticon emoticon emoticon
So that's the plan! Wish me luck.
As you will notice, I'm focusing on fitness minutes instead of the scale for a while.
If I do the work, I'm counting on the scale to follow.
And if I can run a half marathon, I'm not really going to be concerned about the scale
(other than looking forward to not carrying the excess weight 13.1 miles, LOL)!

Be a part of the herd

Wednesday, January 12, 2011

When my motivation is lagging, I have a simple solution - join a class, a group, a team... in other words, be part of a herd. It gives me accountability to be somewhere and get active for at least an hour a day that week, and the group supports me when I wouldn't do it for myself. So for now, I'll follow the leader.
I'm working out with a trainer weekly.
I'm joining a runner group (for the first time) that will likely train for the Komen Race for the Cure in June. Twice a week meetings! I'm going for the morning group instead of the after sunset group emoticon
My tai chi class resumes after MLK holiday.
And every Monday I take the fitness test on my elliiptical in hopes of seeing "average" appear in the rating.
Lean on others and they'll carry you far! emoticon emoticon emoticon

I recently started running with a group on Tuesdays that I am available. I have met some cool runners and it is amazing how we connect with each other. I look forward to more interactions and more connections. Woohoo!

Way to go. I'm with you on this. I try to go to a noon studio cycling class at least two times a week and a noon women's running group. The rest of the days I exercise solo. But it is the group activities that make it fun and motivating...and keep me going. Even though my favorite exercise is running (which I do alone), I like the group aspect. So just in December I joined a women's running group at my gym. It meets on Thursdays so I'm looking forward to it tomorrow.

Please help me decide what device to use for running music

Tuesday, December 28, 2010

Please help! I don't own an iPod or MP3 player. I am running again after many years off, and until I become "competitive" music really helps me keep moving. (I know how important it is to be safe out there, and that many races restrict use of earbuds during competition.)
I've been using a walkman with my own burned CDs.

So what is my best investment option?

I know the songs I like and have on CDs. I know the pace I want. I don't want to "rebuy" every song. I like to burn my own CDs and create my own playlist according to when I think I will be a certain distance in a race (according to time).
I also have a Droid X and can listen to Pandora - the problem there is you can't put the songs in the order you want.

Thanks for your suggestions! I plan to buy whatever sounds best before New Year's Eve.

Agree on the shuffle. If you just want music, you'll probably get plenty of storage with the shuffle for the lowest price. I have the version that allows you to choose between multiple playlists. Took me a little while to figure out how to do that using the button on the earbud but love it now that I've figured it out. I still us my iPhone outside, though, just in case I do something stupid and need hubby to come bail me out. I've been known to fall down standing still.

I got myself an Ipod shuffle. It's adorable. It's so tiny and clips right on your collar. I think I paid $50 for it. I have a droid based phone and I like it but it's too bulky to use for exercise.

LEAHKRAS 12/28/2010 12:16PM

There's this great iPod called the shuffle. While you can't read what music is on it, it's significantly cheaper than any other iPod ($20, I think - Don't quote me). Plus iTunes (which you download for free) will allow you to burn your CD's onto your computer. The coolest part about iTunes, I think, is the ability to create your own playlists (I have a workout playlist with upbeat tunes!) I agree that music keeps me motivated when it comes to running. It helps me set a pace!

Good luck with your running endeavors and let me know what you end up choosing and if you need help!

Peace! emoticon

I got the ipod Nano last year for Christmas. I love it! If I had gotten it this year I probably would have asked for the Shuffle. Last year the shuffle only had the shuffle option, and like you I wanted to be able to create my own lists. The new shuffle has changed shape and now they have buttons and playlists. It doesn't have a camera like my Nano but that's really overkill anyway. I have them in my phone and camera don't really need it in my ipod. It looks like it clips right on to your clothes. At $49 I also think it is priced right. I have found the Nano to be really easy to use ( once my sons explained how to use it). I can load from my own cds or buy from the apple store online. It has made working out fun!

With the Droid you can move your songs from your computer to it like someone suggested. You can also create a playlist of songs you want for running of just the songs you want to use then. If you already have it then you won't have to invest in something new.

I got an iPod Nano three years ago as a Christmas gift, and I'm amazed I haven't lost it yet! I love it! I have all sorts of music on it, and I use iTunes to sort them and store the ones I don't have loaded on it. Whenever I play a cd on the computer, it stores it ready to put on my iPod! It has an FM tuner in it as well, so you can do radio if you don't like your playlist that day!

What I like about it is that it fits in a pocket and doesn't interfere with my motion!

Good luck with your decision!

    Thanks, Papamikie!
The walkman is both old and skips when I pick up my speed. I have to wear it in a fairly large fanny pack on my waist, across the lower back, and I'm also concerned it affects my form (I'm not worried that "it makes my butt look big" LOL!)
And it's heavier than those cute little devices I see people wear on their arms.
I'm ready for an upgrade! And I deserve it emoticon

It is not the time of the year for them, but we bought a very workable IPod for $15.00 at a garage sale. I guess with your time frame this is out the window.

I used an Ipod for a while when I was setting up my cadence. I have cadence files at specific bpm that play for about 5 min and then give you a new count in. They were designed to run at a specific number of step per min.

What is wrong with the walkman?

This or that? Decisions, decisions...

An update on how the “Just 10” bracelet is working.
It’s serving as a “food showdown” challenge. What do I want more
– that piece of candy or a smaller butt? emoticon emoticon
That extra helping or to be able to reach a new PR on my next run? emoticon emoticon
The habit of eating in front of the TV or more time with future grandkids? emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

As I mentioned when I joined SP, something in my brain finally clicked to “DO THIS” instead of “Wish it would happen to a nice girl like me.”
One day I got up and walked a 5K to the bull statue of Major, the Durham mascot.

And walked back.

One day I registered for a half marathon. And completed it. And want to do another. Never mind that I am STILL amazed when I see my car magnet and think “I did a 5K…AND 10 more miles!”

One day I joined a dance class, even though I was obviously the biggest person in there. Now I understand my body better, walk more erect, and love to move.
One day I WILL reach my goal weight, and when I do, I will have the tools to maintain it. Because I did it the right way – by making it a lifestyle, not a die-t. By having fun, not by depriving myself. When I look at all the vegetables in a half cup serving, I sometimes wonder “how am I going to eat all this food?”
So as we prepare for our New Year’s resolution, remember that YOU HAVE THE POWER TO REACH YOUR GOALS. Just remember to AIM STRAIGHT AT THE TARGET, and keep shooting your arrows (or darts) until you reach it.
emoticonHit the bull’s eye.

Or as we “turtles” like to say, “Today is a good day to kick some bunny butt!”
emoticon emoticon emoticon
Don’t stop until you’ve CROSSED that FINISH LINE!
