Lunchbox Insanity

Friday, August 31, 2012

My kids seem to lose or forget their lunchboxes very frequently. My son lost his yesterday, and I found out why this happens so often. All the kids in class who brought their lunch have to put their lunches in a big bin. This bin is then moved out into the hall where it stays until lunchtime. The kids go to the bin and get their lunch, and they put it back after lunch. Then they go back and get it when it is time to go home. Some other kid must have gotten my son's lunchbox by mistake, realized it wasn't his, and then stashed it in the bathroom. My son found his lunchbox in the bathroom today. Why does the school do this? Wouldn't it be so much simpler to just have the kids keep their lunches with their backpacks? I was so frustrated as I spent a good bit of money on their lunch stuff this year. I'm glad he got it back. I had to pack his lunch in the small lunch bag he used last year.

Anyway, today's lunch was turkey and cheese sandwiches on whole wheat, carrots and cherry tomatoes with ranch dip, and raisins. I gave him popcorn for a snack.

On a totally different topic, we ate dinner at Olive Garden tonight, and I could only eat about 1/4 of my meal (which was close to 300 calories!) after eating a salad. Several years ago that would have been normal for me, so I'm quite pleased about that. When I gained all my weight I probably would have easily eaten over half of the meal along with a bread stick or two. This definitely proves to me that my body has adjusted to my healthy habits.

kids meals can be frustrating and schools are not very accommodating at large and what they serve is horrifying; they seem to be out to undo all the good healthy habits we're trying to instill in them.

Good job at the Olive Garden. Keep it up!

That sounds like a totally insane system. I work in a school and often see really stupid things done that confuse me - I am sure that in somebody's mind, there was a REASON why this system was started. Often it is as simple as - 15 years ago, when Mrs. X's classroom was being painted, there was no place to put her students' lunchboxes, so they put them in a bin in the hall. Then after a couple of years, even though Mrs. X is retired, everyone just follows the SYSTEM. There is a story about a woman who learned to cook her ham, she always cooked it the same way - her hubby asked why she always cut a piece about 4 inches wide off of the ham whenever she made it. She said, she did it that way because her MOM did, so she asked her Mom why she did it, she said, because HER mom did it that way, but SHE would ask her. Her mother simply replied that the pan she had as a newlywed wasn't big enough to put the WHOLE thing in, so she cut the end off.

Sorry that the system is so disfunctional for the students, and frustrating for YOU and probably the other parents too.

My Job & Thursday's Lunch

Wednesday, August 29, 2012

I got a job at a gym. I'm super excited even though it's just for a few months.

Tomorrow's lunch for the kids is a spinach tortilla with refried black beans, salsa, lettuce, and tomatoes; grapes; and a strawberry smoothie. The snack is an apple. So far they have been eating almost everything I put in their lunches. My son has had a little bit of stuff left, but that's just because he said he ran out of time. Once I start my new job I'll have to pack a lunch for myself also.

Tomorrow's lunch for the kids is meatless "meat" balls, colby-jack cheese, carrots and celery with ranch dip, and blueberry Special K fruit crisps. For their snacks they both have raisins, my son has whole grain Goldfish, and my daughter has Triscuit crackers.

Tomorrow's Lunch

Tomorrow both kids are having whole wheat cheese tortellini with cherry tomatoes in "sauce" made with extra virgin olive oil and Italian seasoning. They are also having Yo Crunch which is vanilla yogurt with applesauce and a crunchy cookie-like topping. Grapes are the snack tomorrow.

Kids' Lunches

Sunday, August 26, 2012

Since tomorrow is the first day of school here I thought I'd share what I put in my kids' lunches. I have a son in 4th grade and a daughter in 2nd grade. I can try to do this every day if anyone is interested. I let them pick out what they want with my guidance and discretion of course. They have insulated lunch boxes with smaller boxes that go inside with ice packs in the lids, and they have drink containers that I fill with Mio flavored water. They also have access to a microwave at school, so some days they might have stuff they will warm up.

Son's Lunch: whole wheat wrap with 2 slices of turkey, 1 slice of cheese, spinach, and hummus (for the glue); Triscuit crackers, cherry tomatoes, more hummus for dip, raisins, and a watermelon smoothie. For his morning snack he has an apple.

Daughter's Lunch: same type of wrap, celery, carrots, cherry tomatoes, ranch dressing for dip, raisins, and a watermelon smoothie. Her teacher has not said anything about snacks, so I'm not giving her one until I find out if they're allowed.
