Stupid Mistakes - Smart Mistakes Series: Food #1

Thursday, January 26, 2012

Last night I had a "deep thought" after I veered off-course on the food I had planned to eat. You know how it goes - you're doing great then suddenly an overwhelming compulsion to eat something comes over you and you seem helpless in the face of it. Well last night, the peanut butter monster got me!

I had been craving peanut butter - not usually a trigger food for me - and finally bought some on sale. For dinner I'd planned on warming up a whole wheat pita, cutting it in half and smearing each with 1 Tbsp of pb. Yummy! Well that worked fine but in addition to the planned food - I ate another 2 Tbsp right from the jar and then 1/4 cup of raw peanuts.

While this ranked only as a minor transgression, I noticed that I immediately felt that I'd let myself down and was well on my way to donning a hair shirt and engaging in emotional self-flaggilation when I stopped and thought about how stupid that would be. When I thought about it - was the "PB divergence" worth going to the effort to drag the mental hair shirt and willow branches out? It was NOT. I then realized that the only thing WORTH the time and mental effort was to check and see if anything other than a mild craving caused the "divergence" and if not, to move on and get back on track with the next meal.

Which is exactly what I did AFTER I noticed how freeing it was to quit beating up on myself for something that happens to all of us from time to time. Wow - who knew you could actually stop yourself from beating yourself up? (OK - maybe some of you did but this is such a knee-jerk reaction for me that it completely floored me!)

So the stupid mistake: Emotional self-flaggelation for a minor transgression that may have spiraled out of control with food featured prominently in making myself feel better after the beating. This is pointless, dramatic and damaging.

And the smart mistake: By-passing using myself as a human punching bag, checking in with myself, moving on and immersing myself in a good read. Peaceful, emotionally supportive and completely without drama, hair shirts and willow branches.

    Hi Jen;

I love PB and eat some every day because one thing you have to remember it is very good for you. I ate 4 very small cookies I baked last night for DGD and enjoyed them and didn't feel bad at all. We have to once in a while have something we crave because it would be very hard to loose weight if we punish ourselves. Track your food and exercises and you can see what you are doing right. Live and have fun instead of punishing. God bless you always. Stay happy, healthy and make life fun.

Wonderful way to look at things. Plus it is peanut butter! Not oreos or chocolate or million other unhealthy thing but protein! There are so many other things you could have messed up on! I think you deserve a medal of accomplishment! You did it! Turned the corner to a healthy new way! Congratulations! Enjoy the success of all your hard work! emoticon

Oh my goodness, I love what you've had to say - after all, we've all had one type of 'monster' or another take over and the next thing we know, we're sitting there with an empty ice cream container or whatever the trigger food might be - empty cookie box, empty potato chip bag, etc - but you WERE able to stop and you DID learn a very important lesson, sharing it with the rest of your SparkFriends so we can benefit, too. I say that really is pretty darned smart!!!

Losing weight is not the only way to feel lighter!

Monday, August 08, 2011

I've got to shout out to FlyLady.net for her amazing system!

I've been decluttering my office this month, 15 mins at a time. I was really shut down about this task because the office, though small, is where a LOT of paper clutter gathers. Since 2005 when I became ill, I have NOT been practicing good filing practices. As I go through my two 3 foot long drawers that are CRAMMED full of stuff - I'm amazed and what I'm finding. Old utility bills from as far back as 1998 when I moved into this house. Cell phone booklets from phones I had in the last millennia, a neighborhood directory from 14 yrs ago... Heck, half those people don't even live here any more!

So I've been sorting, shredding and recycling. It's a process - that's for sure. But with each paper that leaves my house, I'm lighter. Lighter in spirit - freed from this enormous albatross of STUFF that was deemed important but really is...well...NOT.

Cleaning out my file cabinet also gives me peace of mind that I know where my truly important documents are - my living will, my medical directives, my health records and the like. I know that if something should happen to me (and it could - I've had 3 close calls already) - I will NOT be leaving a legacy of junk and clutter for my friends and family to go through at a stressful time.

So THANK YOU to Flylady. Thank you for continuing to send out testimonials on people who've had to deal with the death of a loved one and all their possessions and clutter. My goal is to live lightly on this earth and leave as lightly as possible as well.

Next up - getting serious about end of life stuff - you know - fun stuff like what to do with my body, end of life celebrations, music, readings... It's one of those things no one likes to think about - but it's freeing to me to think I can have this set up so that it's as painless as possible for those I love.

Lest you think it's all morbidity over here - it's SO NOT. This experience is really freeing! It's brought my family closer together. It's pretty darn cool.

Peace out, Sparkies! I'm going to see if my shredder is up to tackling old paid bills from when I had a pager. A PAGER! That's such ancient technology! emoticon

Great to see you back blogging Jen - I've been 'away' from Spark for a while and have probably missed loads. I'm the worst hoarder in the world - well - I know one who's worse but that's another story. You have motivated me today to get back with the Flylady programme and I really thank you for that. I'm looking at a new possibility - have to have a project, me - which is textile art and I need to clear away a lot of the teaching stuff from one of my previous lives so that I can set out crafty bits and pieces - so much more inspiring than when they're not on show. Nightmare - but I've started - so I'll finish. You're quite right - losing pounds is NOt the only way to feel lighter.

Good luck with the rest of your office and BIG emoticon

    Hi Jen;

I have been cleaning up my files and have to clean out closets and everything. Winter time is my time for that because I don't go out too much in the cold. I too believe in getting everything ready so my children don't have to go searching and will know just what to do. I have already paid for the head stone and have the will made out. Have what each child is to get out of my personal items. There will be no fighting over things like some families have because I have everything written out.
Stay with your healthy life style and have fun, love life and smile. Learn from Spark people each day.

The HABOOB that ate Phoenix!

Wednesday, July 06, 2011

Weather in the desert can get pretty impressive at times. Last night was one of those times. A giant "haboob" - which means "dust storm" - swallowed Phoenix whole yesterday evening. I'm sure it made national news - the thing was 7000 ft tall, 50 miles wide and traveling at about 50 mph.

Here's video my neighbor, Chris, took in downtown Phoenix as the storm rolled in:

www.youtube.com/watch?v=XMyKlgHeqUE www.youtube.com/watch?v=ndlGKp0w3JQ

This is the biggest haboob I've ever experienced here. Every yr - just prior to the summer monsoon, we get these mammoth dust storms. I remember racing ahead of one down the freeway. It finally caught up with me and visibility was instantly about 2 ft. Everyone pulled over. Haboobs are pretty awe inspiring!

A Party in my Pantalones!

Wednesday, May 04, 2011

I will make this short and shallow.

First - to be properly attired. For your viewing pleasure, I will don the costume of the nasturtium flower fairy from Cicely Mary Barker's "Flower Fairies" book. (I am so adorable!)

Now for the much anticipated news regarding the aforementioned bash in my bloomers...

As many of you know from a previous TMI blog "It's an underwear free kinda day" - I tend to wear spandex shorts under my clothing rather than traditional "panties". Keep in mind I said "spandex".

Well for the last week or so, the spandex has been loose upon my person! Loose spandex - is it even possible? At first I thought that my corpulence had just stretched the fabric to it's exhaustion point. But I tried on a pair worn only a couple of times and its loose too.

emoticon emoticon emoticon

What I choose to celebrate - this athiest's viewpoint.

Tuesday, May 03, 2011

I choose to celebrate people with different views working together towards a common cause.
I choose to celebrate people doing small, kind acts for others - because they can.
I choose to celebrate an atmosphere where people can speak freely without fear of reprisal due to difference.
I choose to celebrate growing a garden and sharing the bounty with others.
I choose to celebrate the person who takes the time to pick up litter left by others.
I choose to celebrate those with trials and heartache who still have a smile and kind word for a stranger.
I choose to celebrate the joy of small children laughing.
I choose to celebrate trying something new.
I choose to celebrate counting amongst my friends those with many different viewpoints.
I choose to celebrate the talents of those around me.
I choose to celebrate losing oneself and finding oneself over and over again.
I choose to celebrate making mistakes and taking a lesson from them.
I choose to celebrate the human continuum.

I choose to celebrate the best in people. I choose to celebrate you and me.

Peace.

ADDED NOTE: To all my friends here and elsewhere of differing faiths and politics - THANK YOU for your voice. Your many comments left me overwhelmed this morning.

Today will be another day to celebrate the basic goodness of humans. That is a gift you all have given to me. And it's HUGE.

    Hi DOWNTOWNJEN;

If that isn't me to a tea and I try to live my life like that. We should be here to give to others and help others. I have lived my life like doing that.

Continue to live a healthy life style. God bless you always. Learn from Spark people each day.

I too chose to celebrate such things according to God's sovereign plan, and thanks to His love for us I can add to the list the choice to celebrate eternity with Him through His son Jesus! With all the bad junk going on in the world, it's easy to wonder why a great God would allow bad stuff. But the 1st 2 humans on Earth were just like me. They messed up and brought on a fallen world, so now we are all in need of a saviour to get us out of this jam.

Great list of things to celebrate! I'm a Christian and I celebrate them too.

BTW, I read the status on your SparkPage, and I cannot rejoice in the death of one either. It's a sad event, no matter who gets killed.
