Time to get back to blogging....

Saturday, September 08, 2012

Hi..just thought I'd give a quick reap on the first week of my OAMS (once a month shopping) The project is going great although I have been back to the stores a couple times...Okay..the day after my big shop I discovered I was out of coffee filters..so since hubby was off to town anyway I rode along and got some and managed to get out of the store with just coffee filters and 2 pks of margarine on sale that will be perfect for my fall baking needs....then a few days ago we stopped at a local farmer's market and I bought a zucchini..mine all died! and also while in town I snagged some fresh produce from the Co-op. We've made one trip to Weyburn since the big shop and I bought some cat food ( we still have tons of barn cats but they have been mysteriously dying?) I also bought a magazine for myself as a treat...

All in all I think my first couple of weeks have been successful..I knew I couldn't be so organized off the bat to just not shop at all for a month but I have been working on it..like my other several projects..it's a work in progress....I'm sure the spending will be way down :) and that is the goal..well that and healthy eating...

I was back on the bike today and rode 6 miles..and we also had to treat a cow so that was a bit of a rodeo. I've been cleaning up the garden, too and pulled all my corn and fed it to the sick cow..not much left in the garden..which is a good thing since we've had frost the last 2 mornings. I have made a few batches of tomato sauce and we've been eating fresh tomatoes like crazy..I picked 1/2 a 5 gal pail of what was left and pulled the plants before the frost...I've been covering the onions. What's left is root veggies..carrots, beets, turnips and potatoes so they will all be okay for awhile...

Things are kind of getting back to normal here and we've started to haul in some of the bales..fall work will be done very early this year as it's so hot and dry.... still no rain :( Hubby is baling straw for the neighbor since he has been way behind due to break downs...so I have some quiet time to myself. Did a bit of house work and after I'm done sparkin' I'm off to quad the home pasture herds .

September always feels like a clean slate to me..a start over kind of month and that's where I'm at right now....my goals are coming along..just been tracking my food on paper tho..need to get it entered into the food tracker here..that always helps so much for me!! Time to learn some new things and improve some areas of my life...

Hope fall is going great for all of you..thanks for dropping by and keep on Sparkin'

Love Donna emoticon

Hmmm.... I like that once a month grocery shopping. I think it does help cut down on spending. I know I always pick up extra every time I step into the stores. Staying out of them is always cheaper for sure.

I love fall too and that feeling of starting fresh. Still plenty hot here...and no rain.

I'm interested in your once-a-month shopping experiment! I'm sure you will save a lot of money. Living in the country we do stockpile more food...I believe we could eat from our freezer, pantry and garden for at least a month...it would be interesting to try.

Frost already? I don't even want to think about that:) With no rain all summer, we've had TONS in the last couple of days. Kinda makes me wish we'd fixed the chimney in the summer ... ahem.

Why have you decided to do once a month shopping? (Did I miss something?)

I also believe September is a month for renewed direction and planning. A lot more routine comes back into your life once kids/grandkids are back in school, etc. Good luck with your plans:)

Hi Donna - glad things are starting to get back to normal. Can't believe you've had frost already. Still mid-20's here in the daytime and mid-teens at night. i'm glad the once a month shopping is going well. I really dislike grocery shopping, so maybe I should think about it.

Take care, Gail

New project..once a month shopping...

Tuesday, August 28, 2012

Hi..I've been working on this new project ..got the idea from Pinterest to reduce shopping and money spent by trying to shop just once a month...

Been planning out some meals and extras and today went to Weyburn and did , hopefully the shopping for most of September...main courses and sides all planned, lots of breakfast foods to use up and also a big supply of snacks and fresh and frozen fruits and veggies...also lucked out and found our store to have lots of $.99 bread on sale...

One thing I'm going to do is the detox water from Dr.Oz the other day...I made up 10 baggies of sliced cucumber and assorted citrus fruits and some water and froze them....then the plan is to put one in a large pitcher of water..steep overnight and drink at least one glass before each meal...more if you want..it also is supposed to have fresh mint in it..but the store was out and I think most of my mint is dried up..might do in a pinch...

I bought a huge bag of spinach as the garden stuff is almost all finished..I bagged it up in baggies for quick salads for me...peppers were on sale for 1/2 price so I got a huge bag and prepared some fresh and chopped and froze the rest..when I was a cook at the nursing home we'd buy them like that and they could be used in lots of ways..even in salads and tasted fresh, not frozen. Also checked out on the internet that cooked sweet potato can be frozen..I have trouble with fresh ones spoiling for me...

Well these are just a few of my ideas...it's still a work in progress so we'll see if I can reall keep grocery trips to once a month...anyone have any suggestions or ideas??

From the ideas on Pinterest they said to to plan to use the fresh, most perishable fruits and veggies first and then use the longer lasting ones during the later weeks..cabbages, apples, oranges, etc.

Well..I can see how keeping out of the stores will really help me spend less and quit buying "treats" and use up and/or make from scratch more stuff. I usually follow a rough weekly menu plan anyway..Sunday..chicken, Monday ...pasta.. Tuesday..ethnic...Wed..beef...Thurs..pork chops...Fri..fish..Sat..BBQ..so easy to have the main course meals planned..just have 4 of each on hand....then the lunches are easy..tho I`m always looking for new ideas...quite often lunch is soup and sandwich, or on Sundays..eggs and toast...hubby likes burgers and fries so then I have a salad...there`s always chili..since I have 12 a deepfreeze of bull burger still...

Well..I`m tired from my shopping and preparing day..better run..thanks for dropping by..keep on Sparkin`

Love Donna

Donna, Great minds run along the same lines. Guess we both have great minds. I have for a number of years done the bulk of my grocery shopping once a month. I get my check the first of the month and I go shopping then. This last month. I printed out Spark people menus for a month and then went through and made a list of what I would need to stay on it. I did go through and look at the actual meals to see if there was anything I would not eat and there was. So I remade that days plan and altered the shopping list for that.
I never knew you could freeze cooked sweet potatoes. Can you also freeze cooked potatoes?
I have frozen the grapes and have had some to see if I like them. They are good. I also froze peaches by just cutting them in half and taking the seeds out, and throwing them in a bag. I got a peach out a couple of days ago and diced it frozen onto my oatmeal and it was really good. I have heard that if you chop cucumbers and freeze them in small amounts, that they are great to give flavor to salads during the winter.
I may have to look into another freezer within the next year,. I will have things pretty well full and not be finished.
God bless
Barb

I am a menu planner, but I don't really look ahead to see if I have all the ingredients, because I have a well stocked pantry and freezer. I either have it, or I don't and will substitute. When there is a sale, I buy enough to last until the next sale, usually in 12 weeks for some things. Other items roll around sooner, and some are seasonal. So sometimes I may only be buying a few items, just lots of them :) It just depends on what I need to restock my pantry.

I freeze many items, everything that I can. I am finding though since my journey, that I am making more stops at the store for produce. But many times that is all I need. In and out.

My menus are planned around the main dish only. I assign meats to certain nights so that we have variety and we have enough fish & chicken. So two nights of chicken, two nights of fish, one night of beef, one night of pork and the weekends are more whatever.

I build around the main dish, but that is just a small portion on the plate. My sides are veggies on hand - what was on sale that week or already in the frig/freezer/pantry. Usually half of my plate is a big ole salad emoticon

I feed alot of ppl here. A lot of stray teenagers. This is how I make it work for as few dollars as possible.

Some good ideas, Donna. I know that shopping less frequently would save time and gas (although I can shop right in town, maybe 1 mile each way). Storage would be a problem... but I could work on it. I normally shop once a week for 2 weeks then skip a week and use up left-overs. I make a big pot of soup to use up vegetables, left-over meats, etc. Good luck with your new project.

Just joined Pinterest last week. I love all the info. on it, & the pics. Although I haven't had a lot of time to check things out, I plan to eventually.
I must say saving money sounds good to me but with a house full here, it's hard to save on anything.
I'm looking forward to getting back to "normal" again. Shopping, cooking, & Relaxing are all on my agenda.
Wish I had some good cooking ideas for you. But I can hardly get any time in my kitchen anymore. Hmmmm, maybe that's a good thing.
You take care!
