Did lots of different things today...

Wednesday, May 16, 2012

Hi..today started with a neighbour delivering some oats to us, then hubby was going to Weyburn with some dry cows and take one bull up to do a semen retest, so I helped unload the oats and then sort and load the cattle..

..while hubby was gone I checked through the pairs to make sure everybody was fine after branding and the 2 sets of twins weren't mothered very good so I put one set back in a little pasture together and then chased one other twin up to it's momma....then checked the pasture of heifers and gave them salt and minerals. Then checked the cows to calve ..we just have 6 left to calve so it's winding down now...

..then I counted out some oats for a germination test to see if these new oats will be seed or feed...100 kernels in a damp paper towel on the top of the fridge.... should be sprouted in a couple days...

...then I had some time for myself..so I got the old roto tiller going and worked some of the trees in the shelter belt...after doing about a quarter of them..... hubby came home and I needed a drink so I quit for awhile...I helped unload the bull and then had a coffee break with hubby.

..then we went over to the pasture corrals where 3 new bulls were delivered so we checked them and turned them out into a little pasture for awhile.

...we checked through the pairs together and made sure they were doing fine.... then hubby was trying to get my newer roto tiller started but it wasn't cooperating....when it does start I'll do my garden and then hopefully get it planted this weekend....

..now hubby is phoning for the pasture take ins..I talked to my neighbour for awhile first to see how she's doing..and we made plans to go to the local greenhouse for some bedding plants..maybe in a few days :)

..well I guess I should go for now..typing is hard since I have blisters all over my hands from roto tilling..darn roto tiller...thanks for dropping by..keep on Sparkin'

Shelter belt? Is that like a windbreak? I ordered some tress from our conservation department and they arrived yesterday. I think I have about 200 to plant now....

It must be SOOOO tough to do the hard work you do and not want to eat like a guy "farm hand"! That's why all the old fashioned barn raisings etc. meant such big dinners with ham and scalloped potatoes and three kinds of pie, right??

Love to hear about your day-to-day chores. I've never known anyone before who was involved in agriculture, so it's fun to learn a little bit.

Holy Moly! You did all that today? Already? Makes my early and long day ahead seem like a nap. My problem, is getting in some walking time. Will have to do in the dark when I get home much much later.

Happy Mother's Day...

Monday, May 14, 2012

Hi..this will be a quick blog as I need to go to bed soon because tomorrow is a busy day..branding!!

We really had FUN at the 50th Anniversary last night...hubby cousin has the most beautiful yard..like a park, and beautiful, emormous home!! They had a huge tent up in the yard and the pot luck was delicious!! Good thing we have a couple high energy days to burn off some of the extra calories...too much fun :)

Today was a great mother's day!! 2 of my 3 kids called, hubby gave me a card and roses, son said he mailed a card so I should get that next week :)

We spent today getting ready for tomorrow..we get some neighbors over to help so I need to plan a menu that can be completely made ahead of time without me in the house..I've gotten really good at that..this is the 35th time..haha :) I usually do some beef raosts but we are out of roasts..just all this dang bull burger so we're having burgers...I BBQed them already and then will put them in the crock pot with fried onions and BBQ sauce on low..yum yum...I'm also going to try crock pot baked potatoes (saw this on Pinterest) scrubbed and foil wrapped..the cooking times are 8 hours on low or 2 hours on high so I'll do a bit more than 1 hour on high, while we put the cattle in the corrals then turn them to low for the rest of the morning...we never know what time we'll eat as just when ever we get done...the sides are micro waved cream corn, leftover marinated pasta salad, pistachio salad, cold canned beans, burger buns lettuce, tomatoes, cheese...dessert is boughten pumpkin pies and canned whipped cream, I also made a chocolate cake and some oatmeal coconut cookies....yes it's taken me almost all day..I also cleaned house and helped with lots of the outside stuff, working on corrals, hanging gates, moving critters around, hauled heifers to pasture, found all the stuff we need for tomorrow..syringes, branding iron, needles, tags etc...then we rounded up the big herd of pairs..actually I used the quad and hubby lured them in with bales in the shredder..it went great :) but now I'm beat!!

So now I'm off to bed so we can get up bright and early and start with the cattle..

Hope you all had a great Mother's Day...the weather is so great here..and tomorrow is supposed to be great too :)

Thanks for dropping by..keep on Sparkin'

What a busy time for you. The slow cooker is a wonderful invention for days like this. I wish I would have had one while we were still at the ranch
Congratulations on the weight loss. emoticon emoticon

TGIF

Saturday, May 12, 2012

HI..so glad it's the weekend!

Today we did some much put off jobs...we tagged and treated the last few calves and turned them out with the other pairs..then we vaccinated the yearling replacement heifers..so they will be ready to put out to pasture tomorrow..and save a few chores.

The corrals are still very wet and I was walking through a deep spot and lost one of my rubber boots..I was barefoot in the boot so I stepped barefoot right into the slop!! too funny..then I had no choice but to put my boot back on, so now it's dirty on the inside and the .outside..haha

When we got the cattle work all finished we went to town for the mail and a few groceries...I bought a new magazine and also got 2 more in the mail..I really have fun reading magazines :) my escape..that and the internet :)

This evening I dug up some sunflowers that seeded themselves and were growing everywhere in the garden..so I can rototill up my patch and get the garden in the next week or so.. Then I'll just transplant them into a row..haha :)

After I did that I brought in the 9 cows left to calve and then mowed grass for about an hour..then tried to catch up on some house jobs..washed a bunch of dishes and dyed my hair.

Tomorrow I have the pot luck food to get ready for the 50th Anniversary. It's for supper and it's near Estevan so hubby will still have time to get some jobs done besides chores.

Well, I'm going to try to get to bed early tonight so I should go for now...thanks for dropping by and keep on Sparkin'

I thought this was a fun article in one of my magazines...

Color yourself happier and healthier!

Green protects your eyesight!
Purple boosts brainpower!
Yellow brightens your mood!
Red improves your love life!
Orange makes you younger!

(these colors are for to look at/wear/or eat..)

Another rainy day..

Friday, May 11, 2012

Hi..it was just overcast this morning but rained all afternoon :(

I quadded the cow/calf pairs morning and evening, we sorted some cattle, then I mowed grass for a couple of hours and did a bit of gardening...and a bit of house work..

The day went by fast..

Something I find really fun is riding the quad...the open prairie in spring is awesome....green grass, wild flowers...

..I read somewhere..anyone can love the mountains, but it takes heart to love the prairie :)

I visited with my neighbor a bit on the phone, and my oldest daughter on-line... and my mother-in-law phoned about her brother's 50th Anniversary on Saturday....

..like I said the day went by fast...

Time for the midnight check and off to bed..thanks for dropping by and keep on Sparkin'
