Beautiful calm day...

Saturday, April 14, 2012

Well beautiful weatherwise....tonight hubby has been having trouble get his tractor apart and the new part on :( we'll try more tomorrow..this is the first day we've missed having a calf..still have 1 1/2 hrs til midnight....

Just watching hockey tonight and catching up on the internet...I weighed today and I'm down a pound..woohoo!!

Helped with cattle and we treated and tagged and turned out more pairs..talked to my sister who had been out to Calgary for a week with her daughter, soninlaw and granddaughter...

After supper I used the quad and checked the cow calf pairs..then brought the cows to calve into the corral...

I'm extra tired today and very achy..on my page a day Maxine calendar there was a good one...Maxine says..."Don't make me come over there. Seriously. My hip hurts!" haha I'm Maxine today!!

Well the last few nights I've been falling asleep on the couch so I jsut might let hubby take the midnight check and go right to bed..after I took the midnight check last night he went to sleep and slept through the night..a nice change....

Tonight when I was checking the herd I found lots of crocus' blooming and the frogs were singing..I've never heard so many frogs before!! Quite a spring :)

Best finish this up..thanks for dropping by and keep on Sparkin'

Too Windy Again Today....

Friday, April 13, 2012

Hi..another day of wind in paradise...

The wind plays me out so everything I have to do outside is twice as hard!! Chores this morning with hay down my back, more tagging this afternoon with straw down my least the calf I bottle fed today was inside the barn.... windy we both made a quick trip to town for mail and groceries, etc...should not bring hubby along with the grocery shopping..I've been trying to spend less and really use up what I have on hand for groceries and just buy basics but he found ice cream on sale and a huge cheese cake for $12.99!! I bought milk, pears, bananas and toilet paper...even with him along didn't spend too much...then we stopped at the library and picked up some new reading material...oh, and bought 2 magazines from the drugstore...lots of visiting along the way...

Hubby was looking in the mail for a registered letter about his job..the meeting yesterday was about federal gov't budget cuts and the federal community pastures are all closing..probably not this year but all will be gone in 6 years and the letter will say when this one will close...

I was checking some of the plants I started and I remembered why I usually buy potting soil to start them...lots of green but not sure yet which are weeds and which are marigolds..

Caught up on some phone calls after supper and after I brought the herd in from the little pasture ..we have less than 30 to calve...2 more calves today..108 calves. One phone call was a follow up to my friend's birthday party..the 3 of us... my 2 best friends and I all celebrate our birthdays in the spring..the March party was next friend's birthday is next week so I'm bringing the cake... my birthday is in May.....the other phone call was about the bridal shower I'm helping put on....

...Started watching the hockey and reading my new magazines and I fell asleep on the couch for a couple's almost time to go out for the midnight check.

My meals today were my basic oatmeal and dates for breakfast (or date cake I like to call it) lunch was a meal replacement shake and frozen strawberries.... had a pear for a snack..then supper was pork chops, the last of the fresh asparagus, beets, potatoes and a small bowl of apple crisp and a wee bit of ice cream..had lots of water today..the wind parches lips are so dry and chapped from the wind..I found this new lip treatment that has polysporin in it and it works great..I put lots on before I went outside and came in looking like I had a dirt moustache or maybe ate a chocolate ice cream cone..haha...

Well sorry if this blog doesn't make much sense since I'm still 1/2 asleep..thanks for dropping by and for all your comments and support..Keep on Sparkin'

Due to recent budget cuts the light at the end of the tunnel has been turned off...

Busy day again! I sure hope when the letter comes it has better news.
Your hubby sounds like mine at the grocery store, always looking for the things that we shouldn't have. I'll allow myself some ice cream but the cheesecake would be a tough temptation.

The story of the 106th calf..

Wednesday, April 11, 2012

Hi..hubby was gone to Weyburn for his meeting so I was holding down the fort.. he left right after I was in charge of the the 2:30 pm check a first calf black heifer had her tail out..a sign of I checked her again in an hour and she had a water bag out...I used the quad and put her in the corral to give her some more time...another hour later and she had feet coming..
so I called hubby..he said he'd be home soon and give her another 1/2 I took the quad and checked through all the herd of pairs for any sick ones and all were fine...back to check the heifer and still no more progress so I put her in the chute and made sure the head was coming, too...all was fine so let her out of the chute...when hubby came home shortly we put her back in the chute and hubby pulled the calf..all was fine..a healthy..huge baby bull calf...

Well that was what I did all afternoon...I also did some puttering in the house, did a bit more gardening and moved around some cattle legs are pretty tired tonight and some of the trips I used the quad..

First thing in the morning the pasture warehouse phoned to say they were coming out with a newer tractor and to get the older one we needed to see if it would where near a plug we used some ether and then boosted it to start...while the guys unloaded and loaded the tractors I used the quad to check the herd of cow calf pairs...

Then helped with chores and opening gates, etc...after a quick lunch, hubby took off....I had put a beef roast in the crock pot so we could have a quick supper at what ever time hubby got home..

My neighbor phoned with morning to give us the news that our friend who was our best man at our wedding is a grandpa..his oldest daughter had twin boys this morning!!

The hockey playoffs start today..I was having hockey I'm watching the Vancouver game while I type this...I think it's time for beer and popcorn..hubby has the munchies....(I'll have light beer and air popped popcorn with no butter or I like it!)

We only had the one calf today so far..they have slowed down a bit..just under 30 left to calve....

Well time to make the popcorn..thanks for dropping by and keep on Sparkin'

105 calves...

Wednesday, April 11, 2012

Hi we just had one calf today..I helped with chores, opening gates and cutting twine..and I cut my hand opening a barbed wire gate :( ouch!!

Then we sorted and loaded 6 cows for hubby to take to he was gone most of the afternoon...I did some housework..dishes, beds..putting away Easter stuff...don't laugh but it was finally calm enough to take down the Christmas lights...I did some work in the garden, digging up some flower beds and started some more plants peppers are coming nicely and I started some herbs and flowers...I walked the little pasture where the cows to calve were several times..the cow that did calve waited til hubby got home...

Hubby was home just in time for supper..I had made a chinese stir fry with the leftover half of my pork chop from last Thursday and lots of veggies...onions, celery, mushrooms, cauliflower, carrots and cabbage..all served over some heated up frozen rice..a nice quick meal..

Then we did some more chores after supper and I did a little bit of tv watching while I checked e-mails, facebook and Pinterest...entered my food and tracked on the 5% spring challenge...

Tomorrow hubby has a video conference call at the office in Weyburn..he's really not on staff until next Monday but this meeting is mandatory for all the pasture managers...I imagine I'll be staying home and checking cows to calve...

It was a beautiful day today..sunny and calm..rain is in the forecast for later in the week so I better enjoy this nice weather while it lasts...

I feel very tired tonight..and I even slept in this morning until 9!!! This flu has got me dragging....2 more hours til the midnight check..hubby's already asleep in his chair and I'm about to doze off on the couch...

Best quit typing before I fall asleep..thanks for dropping by and keep on Sparkin'

104 Calves...

Monday, April 09, 2012

Hi...we had 5 calves today so was born dead so we have 104 calves so far. We have just over 30 left to calve..hubby is taking some open and late cows to market tomorrow so then we'll see how many we have left..really feels like we're in the home stretch now!! Been calving for just over a month...

Last night was a long night ...just before we went to bed, hubby went out to check a bit after midnight and that's when he found the dead calf..also a first calf heifer was he came back in to give her some more time and then we both went out..she hadn't calved yet so we put her in the chute and helped her. By the time we got back in the house it was almost 3 am...I'm dragging today!!

Today I helped with tagging and treating and turning out more pairs...I think tomorrow we'll be turning the big herd of cow/calf pairs to a larger pasture so they have a bigger, cleaner place to be..they didn't get too sick with all the cold and wet snow..just a couple with scours and a few with pus in their eyes..dang wind!! Today was fairly calm for a change :)

Lately I've been having my microwaved oatmeal and dates for breakfast..lunch today was a meal replacement shake..found a couple cans in the cupboard and want to use them up (part of my spring clean/ lighten up plan) Then supper was some pasta and meat and tomato sauce with extra veggies (celery, onions, mushrooms) and a tossed salad...

Did lots of walking and chores today so easily got over the 120 fitness minutes I tracked...I did some laundry and housework..and did some computer surfing too.
Yesterday's treat for me was a pedicure and I'm sporting pale mauve sparkly toe nail's treat for me was a facial scrub :)

Well..better run and take a night check...thanks for dropping by and for all the comments, goodies and encouragement...Keep on Sparkin'

    Hi Donna,
Your post struck a chord with me because we recently moved to property and we're considering what animals to get.
We already have a flock of chickens, one is sadly not well though. I am sorry to read about the calf you lost.
Your day sounds busy and long but like BSTOIBER1 says, how fulfilling!
Take care and I hope to speak with you again soon.
PS - I'm gonna pedicure today too - you inspired me!
