104 Calves...

Monday, April 09, 2012

Hi...we had 5 calves today so was born dead so we have 104 calves so far. We have just over 30 left to calve..hubby is taking some open and late cows to market tomorrow so then we'll see how many we have left..really feels like we're in the home stretch now!! Been calving for just over a month...

Last night was a long night ...just before we went to bed, hubby went out to check a bit after midnight and that's when he found the dead calf..also a first calf heifer was he came back in to give her some more time and then we both went out..she hadn't calved yet so we put her in the chute and helped her. By the time we got back in the house it was almost 3 am...I'm dragging today!!

Today I helped with tagging and treating and turning out more pairs...I think tomorrow we'll be turning the big herd of cow/calf pairs to a larger pasture so they have a bigger, cleaner place to be..they didn't get too sick with all the cold and wet snow..just a couple with scours and a few with pus in their eyes..dang wind!! Today was fairly calm for a change :)

Lately I've been having my microwaved oatmeal and dates for breakfast..lunch today was a meal replacement shake..found a couple cans in the cupboard and want to use them up (part of my spring clean/ lighten up plan) Then supper was some pasta and meat and tomato sauce with extra veggies (celery, onions, mushrooms) and a tossed salad...

Did lots of walking and chores today so easily got over the 120 fitness minutes I tracked...I did some laundry and housework..and did some computer surfing too.
Yesterday's treat for me was a pedicure and I'm sporting pale mauve sparkly toe nail's treat for me was a facial scrub :)

Well..better run and take a night check...thanks for dropping by and for all the comments, goodies and encouragement...Keep on Sparkin'

Busy all day & night. No wonder your tired. I sometimes stay up way to late online but you are always busy doing such hard work.
So sorry you lost one little baby. I know everyone is important.
Sounds like things are going well for you!

    Hi Donna,
Your post struck a chord with me because we recently moved to property and we're considering what animals to get.
We already have a flock of chickens, one is sadly not well though. I am sorry to read about the calf you lost.
Your day sounds busy and long but like BSTOIBER1 says, how fulfilling!
Take care and I hope to speak with you again soon.
PS - I'm gonna pedicure today too - you inspired me!

Happy Easter!!

Sunday, April 08, 2012

Hi...I thought I'd share my Easter bouquet of orange tulips with you :) Hope you all had a great Easter!!

Most of the snow is gone..but the wind is still sticking around..I helped with chores and opened gates and cut twines...then tonight I walked the main herd and checked for sick ones..the muck is hard to walk in..what a work out!!

We had our regular Easter meal (leftovers from last weekend...frozen ham, turkey, dressing and hot cross buns..fresh sweet potatoes and fresh coconut cream pie) Way easier than making everything from scratch again!!

This week's 5% challenge extra for tracking is to use a 9'' I've been having my meals on my desserrt plates that came with my new dishes..8'' so that's perfect! Tonight's supper was on a small paper dishes to do that way...

I talked to my oldest daughter on the phone for awhile today...son is holidaying in Montana so I'll phone him tomorrow....

Just a couple more calves so we are almost up to 100...

Well..I better go for now..hope you all had a blessed Easter and keep on Sparkin'

Hopefully the cows & calves birthing is winding down. Also, hope you get some warmer weather soon. Seems like we had warmer weather in Jan/Feb than we are having in April.
Hmmm. . . the leftovers sound yummy. I made sweet potatoes for Easter and htey were so good. This is a first for me, I always use canned yams. Real tastes so much better.
And Yay for Paper Plates! emoticon

Glad we bedded all the sheds and buses (calf shelters) yesterday...

enjoy the pics...

Beautiful pictures of the snow (so glad I'm not in it). I really don't like the cold weather.
But. . . I love the little calves, aren't they just the cutest. Sure hope you get some warm spring weather soon. I'm still waiting for warm weather also.
Happy Easter!!

Those cattle sure look content, and clean and warm:) But still -- a storm -- argh!! Still those trees sure look pretty covered in snow ...:)

We've had unusually warm weather -- it's rather unsettling, actually, although I'm enjoying seeing GREEN grass. Very weird in April. We've had frost overnights since our hot spell in March but not enough to kill the flowers that have started growing (Whew).

Have a happy Easter:)

Happy Good Friday..all..

Saturday, April 07, 2012

Hi...we haven't got the snow storm yet but it rained most of today and now it's freezing so very slippery...hope everyone who has to travel stays safe!! We probably won't be going to Regina tomorrow..with all the ice and the blizzard forecast...

We've had 6 more calves 97..last night we had a set of twins when hubby went out at 1 am (we slept through the midnight check) One of yesterday's calves has a deformed nose....guess he'll be good to eat..since he will be deeply discounted at the market!

When I went out to help with chores today, I opened gates and took off twine and we put 4 straw bales out so I forked straw into 3 sheds and 3 school buses (we use them as calf shelters) It's been a very tiring day...

Today for meals I had oatmeal and dates since it's so cold here...for lunch I decided to use up some of the powdered meal replacements..and some green grapes for dessert....supper was something I found on asparagus pizza..made with herb flavored cream cheese instead of pizza sauce and use a veggie peeler to make thin strips of the asparagus and topped with grated cheese, all on a personal size pizza crust..I made a cheeseburger pizza for hubby! Quite yummy.

Hope you are all having a great Easter weekend!! Hope the snow stays away and we just get rain...

Thanks for dropping by..and keep on Sparkin'

The calm before the storm...

Friday, April 06, 2012 was a beautiful day!! We finished the rest of the retagging and tattooing the cows and heifers...

We had 3 calves today so far so we have 91 calves now...

I went to town today to put up the bridal shower lists, get the mail and some groceries and pay some bills and then get drinking water on the way home.

I got lots of new magazines in the mail so looking forward to the new reading material :) Especially if we get the huge snow storm we may have coming...yikes.
If it does storm we won't be leaving the ranch..too many babies to take care of so then we may not make it to the funeral on Saturday...

It's already cooling off a lot tonight so I may start a fire since I hauled a load of firewood to the house this morning while hubby shredded bales for the cows...

We both fell asleep on the couches last night so hubby ended up taking the check at 1 am...I guess I thought I needed some extra sleep to get over this flu...

Actually hubby has been taking all the 3 am checks since I got that helps ....

Well..I should go start the fire...Hope you all have the best Easter weekend .... and hope you get nice spring weather and not an Easter blizzard like us...

Thanks for hopping by..Keep on Sparkin' emoticon

Oh my goodness: an Easter blizzard would be most unseasonal!!

Here's hoping you (and I) lick our ill health completely this weekend: did get to the gym and took Charlie for a shortish walk too, so I must be getting better. Your activity level puts me to shame!!

Happy Easter to you, too, Donna. I hope you have just enough snow to keep you safe by the fire, enjoying your new magazines, but not enough to make a lot of extra work for you.
