Had lots of fun at Ladies Nite Out!

Friday, March 30, 2012

Hi..last night was lots of fun, good food, laughs and I won a door prize..a Party Light candle holder :) Visited with lots of friends I haven't seen in awhile!! My neighbour had a good time too...

We had a crazy day today..it started quite normal..had a couple more calves..we're almost up to 70...we went on a little tour after morning chores to check some oil sites in the pasture and on our land, too...then a part was in for our tractor so we went to town for it and stopped at the chinese cafe for lunch..I had shrimp chop suey and it was really good..I didn't get to measure so I counted only for 2 meals today...the chop suey had carrots, onions, celery and lots and lots of bean sprouts and shrimp too of course....

I got a little bit of cleaning done for the weekend..the porch...we got so busy that's all..so tomorrow I have to finish...

We had company this afternoon, then helped with night chores..I helped with bringing the herd in and then I made supper..of pork chops, potatoes, carrots and I made some stirfried kale..I think I put too much lemon juice in it but it wasn't bad...

Then after supper we had a cow that couldn't find her calf..so we spent a lot of time looking for it...when we finally found it in the stack yard it ran through the fence and got into the big pasture so hubby chased him on foot while I went to get the quad and a rope..yikes..it was almost dark and I couldn't find them in the pasture...I finally found them..hubby had caught the calf with his stock cane and used his belt as a rope..he loaded the calf on the quad and took it back to the yard..while I walked home in the dark...

So that was my adventure...at least we rescued the calf...

But I'm beat..

Thanks for dropping by and for all your comments..keep on Sparkin'

I was honored to be in the Spotlight!

Wednesday, March 28, 2012

Hi..I was both surprised and honored to be in the spotlight in the 5% challenge! I wrote this blog last night and then spell checked, then tried to post it and it disappeared...boo hoo..it was over 1000 words and after midnight when I finished so no point in doing it over then..maybe that was karma... not to blog so much!

Yesterday was a wild, wild day!! We had 10 calves yesterday and 2 this morning and it's not 8 am yet...so that makes 64 calves so far...we are almost half done as we started with 142 and lost the twins and one other calf and have 4 or 5 open cows.

Last night in the middle of the blog writing I hubby called me to go out and help pull a calf..she had a giant calf and hubby casually mentioned that she had twins last year..that was around midnight..then this morning she was still calving and we pulled a second twin..both are fine!! I even went in to check her at 3 am and she was fine and not showing she was calving!!

Yesterday after morning chores and hubby feeding, I vacuumed the house. After a quick lunch we turned out more pairs, then I went to check the herd to calve and 4 more had calved and most were in or near the water in this big slough. I went to try to rescue a pair in the most distress...a first calf heifer who was bunting her calf into the mud and water..well she tried to bunt me in too so I called for hubby..way too cold for swimming..really thought he couldn't hear me because of the wind but he came, thank goodness...we used the quad and the calf sled to bring them up to the barn and warm up...I worked on getting another pair up the bank for hubby to get in the quad...the calf wasn't up yet so I grabbed it by the back feet and dragged it, walking backwards..you never turn your back on a newly calved cow! I tripped on a rock and fell over backward! Good thing the cow was a tame one!

The mean momma wouldn't take her calf...so we have them separate....and bottle feeding the baby....my job...

I was planning on going to town in the afternoon but thought I was too pooped by the time we came in for coffee..then I got my second wind and headed to town for a quick trip of errands..mail, recycling, library, ATM, groceries and drinking water...When I got home hubby had more calves to help with and then a quick supper of frozen pizza...and a spinach salad...

Tonight is Ladies Nite Out in our small community and I always bring my 87 year old neighbor and she pays for my ticket...she is a dear friend and mentor. The evening is lots of fun..a huge pot luck supper (groan) entertainment, usually a guest speaker but we heard this year may be a fashion show, then dessert (groan, again...this will be a bad week with early Easter too) and the door prizes!! Also lots of visiting :)

I was looking forward to sleeping in but not to be..to bed after 12:30 am..up at 3 am..then up again at 7 am..whew! I may fall asleep in my supper..haha!

Hubby is starting to feel better..he said he lost 13 pounds! groan ! and he didn't give it to me..this darn healthy living!! haha :)

Well..time to start the day...loooking forward to my evening out...

I'm going to try to find the time to bake hot cross buns for Easter today...and fisinh the house cleaning...

Thanks for all the visits to my page and blog and for all your kind comments! I am so honored to have been in the spotlight :)

Keep on Sparkin' everyone!

Yep, you are in the middle of a busy time for sure! I thought it was funny when you wrote that your hubby lost 13 lbs. Isn't it strange that when we're well and keeping ourself healthy we slowly loose weight, but when we're sick we loose a lot and very fast. Seems like there's an upside to being sick.
Sounds like your group of friends know how to have fun with everything they do. You are very lucky to live in a place where people really know how to share and laugh and enjoy good times.

Hey Donna - glad to hear calving is going so great. I can really relate to the tripping and then you put your head up and look around to see where the heck the cow is and who the heck is looking emoticon altho' you really know there isn't anyone within miles.

Take care and good luck with the rest of the calving. Crappy weather here in BC too - ground is bare but a darn blizzard out there now

8 more calves since I blogged last night...

Monday, March 26, 2012

Hi..we have 52 calves now..when I took the midnight check there were 2 more calves and then we've had 6 so far today....

I decided to wear my pedometer today and have walked 13,500 steps so far and not done walking yet...no wonder my feet hurt....those winter chore boots aren't the best on the feet!!

I helped with the chores this morning, swinging gates and moving herds around. Snow is forecast for tonight and tomorrow so hubby wanted the cow/calf pairs moved to a different place than the little pasture so they have a shed...

Hubby was repairing the tractor today, too so I helped some with that..then after supper we put the herd to calve into the corrals and I cow had calved and a heifer was in labour..so we walked them in and then the heifer calved in the barn tonight. I also carried in some wood if we want a fire tonight or tomorrow, especially if the storm comes.

A lot of my time was spent working on the house work getting ready for early Easter and company on Friday...I have most of it done now..tomorrow is a planned trip to town for mail and groceries (daughter decided she'd rather have turkey instead of ham..but I'll make both and then send lots of leftovers home with the kids) Then I need to do a bit of baking and we'll be all set...

Hubby is still not feeling very good..he was on the phone and just had a coughing fit...so far I'm not feeling too bad...just really tired!!

I tracked and measured all my food again today..I even was having some green grapes and ate 2 before I measured so I measured out 1 cup and then took out 2 grapes..takes awhile to remember it every time!!

I realised that when I was talking about the challenge and that we are going to Vancouver this week..this is a virtual trip..where one exercise minute=one mile, and each week we travel to some place different!! We could never get away on a real trip during calving!!

Well, we've watched a bit of hockey and now hubby is watching a dvd I got for him from the library..and need to take it back tomorrow..so it's 5 or 6 shows and he has the last 2 to watch...

Thanks for dropping by and for all your comments on my blogs, I appreciate all your support and encouragement...keep on Sparkin'

Happy Sunday!!!

Monday, March 26, 2012

Hi..we have 44 calves now..and I had a bit of a more restful day....was able to do a bit of housework this afternoon...

Last night I took the one a.m. check and there was one calf born then and 2 more today...I helped with chores this morning and checked through the cow/calf pairs and turned out the herd...opened gates and cut twines....after lunch we tagged and treated the newest calves...hubby did the night chores...while I was watching world curling...

Still measuring food faithfully..measured cereal and milk for breakfast and even used a tape measure to measure my banana...lunch was 2 eggs on raisin toast and fruit for dessert....supper was oven baked chicken and sweet potatoes, with asparagus, peas and lettuce salad...some saskatoon berries with homemade yogurt...

I missed riding the x bike today as the late nights are catching up with me...

I made a list of things to do before early Easter next Saturday..just making the list made me tired..haha

I did a bit of spring cleaning in the kitchen..found a homemade cleaner recipe on Pinterest..baking soda and peroxide to remove stains...very effective :) I'm also making some homemade green cleaner..soak orange peels in vinegar in a jar with a lid for 3 or 4 weeks..then strain off and dilute (says it's so strong undiluted it can eat plastic) Put it in a spray bottle and use as cleaner... I really like finding ways to save $ and be green...

Well..I should sign off and get some rest...thanks for dropping by and keep on Sparkin'

I really liked this from theturtlebear"s sparkpage...

A restful day when you did housework!! Hmmmm. That orange rind cleaner probably smells really nice!

I do agree that when we eat (prefab diet) foods that lack nutrition we want to keep right on eating as if our bodies are searching for the missing vitamins and minerals and good stuff!!

I love the idea of making green cleaners. My hubby is always buying cleansers and they all smell so strong. I really hate breathing in all those chemicals. I do need to start making my own or at least getting something less toxic smelling.
So glad when you get some time to relax, we all need it.
Wow, Easter is coming up fast, seems like it's earlier this year. I sure hope the weather is nice by then.
We're getting a lot of rain here for the first time in months. But I'm more of a sunshine lover, so I'm already tired of rain.

41 calves now..

Sunday, March 25, 2012

Hi..we had 4 calves so far today so we are up to 41...had a very busy morning of tagging and treating and turning out pairs..we had a late lunch..soup and sandwich...I thawed out some homemade veggie soup and I finished up the rye bread with a toasted avocado sandwich..so yummy..just like my mom used to make....hubby had a nap after lunch..still not feeling much better..staying up most of the night doesn't help much!!

Then I was making a quick coffee and we were going to go back for more chores and a neighbour called and needed help with a cow..she was prolapsing and needed her stitched up..just got the vets answering machine...while hubby did up some quick chores I called our daughter..she's a vet tech as well as an electrician..for some advice and then gathered up supplies...

Then we drove over to the neighbour's...got her all washed up and sterilized and we instructed neighbour on how to do the sewing...I threaded a large darning needle with a shoe lace and he did the sewing..at one point I had to rethread the needle part way through...quite often we do this kind of stuff so neighbours know they can ask us...then we stopped at the house for coffee and a visit..

When we got home it was rushed to finish up the day's chores and do the night chores..I moved the heifers and then chased up the main herd..only one cow had calved so moved them up too, then off to walk through the cow calf pairs and 3 calves had gotten through some wire to a place they weren't supposed to be and their mommas were missing them so I herded them back to where they belonged.

Then while hubby finished the barn chores I went in the house to start supper... it was about 7:45 by then...I made a quick supper of burgers and fries for hubby and a burger and spinach salad for me..we had some peas to go with it and then some strawberry cake for dessert...

Then we watched a bit of hockey and hubby went out to check the cows...he brought the little 2 way radios and didn't come back so I called to see if he needed help....he was having tons of trouble and didn't call...grrrrr..I guess I'll chalk it up to his feeling crappy...but really..why are men so stubborn?? He had the heifers mix up with the cows to calve and then in the corral of newest pairs that weren't turned out..a mean momma was beating on others calves..sometimes cows can be sooo stupid!! It's terrible when they attack other calves (or sometimes even their own) Or us but at least we carry canes to protect ourselves!

Well..sorry for the rant..think I'm just getting over tired myself.....

I faithfully measured or weighed everything that I ate today...even the 1 tbsp of salad dressing and the 1 tsp of mustard on my burger...hope this will help keep up my momentum.....

Thanks for dropping by..and for all the comments...keep on Sparkin'

With all the work you do during the day and night, I'm surprised you can find time to make such healthy meals. But it sounds so good. Good for you for sticking with your goals, despite the cows and their crazy games. I think they just want your attention!
I know what you mean about men being stubborn. They truly are, & they hate to ask for help. I guess they think it shows weakness or something. But hey, we are their better half, right?
Get some rest so you can keep up with the silly cows.
