Had 2 more calves today..

Thursday, March 15, 2012

Hi we had 2 more calves today, but the other twin didn't make's always sad to lose them...

I went out and picked up all the blown around stuff from last night's wind storm this morning...several pieces of tin for doing the back of the barn blew around and some other things like pails, etc..not to much damage..thanks goodness!!

I took the midnight check last night and then slept through the night so I feel much better today. Tonight's my night for the checks so after the hockey game I'll take the midnight check tonight and then get up for the 3 am least it's not too windy tonight...

I helped with chores and moving cattle around and then we put up a temporary wall in one of the corrals...I did my 30 minutes on the exercise bike and ate within my calorie limits..had a spinach salad and a bit of leftover chili for lunch and roast beef and some roasted carrots and celery ( hubby had potaotes and gravy with his supper)

I took some time to finally catch up on the 5% spring challenge and did the pre-challenge assignments..I'm a Starfish and a Sea mentor this starts Saturday :)

A friend that I went to school with phoned this afternoon..what a nice surprise :) her and her husband are spending the winter in California..and she just phoned to visit :)...

Well speaking of phoning I should go for now and phone my sister...I found a long lost 2nd cousin on facebook yesterday so that was quite exciting :)

Thanks for dropping by and keep on Sparkin'

I grew up on a dairy farm and then farmed when I was first married, so I understand how you feel about losing a calf. I don't farm now, but on my drive to work there are several fields with cattle and I'm just waiting for those little specks to start appearing. That means spring has finally arrived. Good luck with the rest of the calving.

We have 14 calves now...

Wednesday, March 14, 2012

Hi..we had a calf last night and five today...things are picking up..except one of the cows today had twins and one didn't make it..we had to help her and the first calf was born dead..the second one is weak and may not make it. I fed her a bottle but hubby says she's not doing too great tonight..the others are all happy and healthy :)

We just had the most horrible wind storm blow through a few hours ago and moved a lot of stuff around here..we'll have to check out the damage in the morning....the wind is still howling now but not as bad...yikes!!

My cold got quite a lot worse since my busy road trip day and being over tired...when I got up for the 3 am cow check last night my throat was burning and I ended up sleeping in until almost 9:30 this morning!! And I've been dragging all day...wishing my energy would come baxk cuz I have sooo much to do...throat's still sore tonight..just drinking extra water....

I didn't do too much extra today..we tagged and treated some of the new babies and I helped with chores and helped bring the herd in..

Meals were just quick and easy ones..lunch was chili with extra veggies and a frozen pack of pre cooked burger and spinach salad...supper was sausages, perogies, onions and green beans with a spinach and tomato salad. I made a bread pudding for hubby for a of his favorites (I had some bread machine raisin bread leftover in the fridge so that was perfect in it)

I've been doing some of the Spring 5% challenge that starts on Saturday :) and joined another new spark team...always fun to keep it fresh :)

Well..time to get to bed..hope hubby will take all the night checks...thanks for dropping by and keep on sparkin'

Had a great day yesterday!!

Monday, March 12, 2012

Hi..yesterday was fun..the granddaughters were so sweet in the skating carnival... also enjoyed a delicious lunch prepared by oldest daughter. I even had time to play some card games with the kids before they needed to be in town.

They trip up was quite memorable..when I turned off the grid on to the highway flagging trucks went by with 3 long and wide loads of stacking condos that are built in the states and trucked here and put together..these ones were headed to north of Regina where a new complex is being built for the new potash mine construction workers. I thought ..on no they'll go really slow and I'll never pass them, but to my amazement they travelled quite a bit over the speed limit so I could barely keep up..haha. South of Regina I saw 3 large moose in the ditch.. once we never saw them around here but lately they are getting more and more common. They travel from Moose Mountains over to Cypress Hills and go past our neck of the woods to get there!! Still and amazing sight!!

It was a very long day as I was up at 5:30 am, left shortly after 7 am and got home around 9 pm...I did stop at Regina for some groceries at Super Walmart. I've been wanting to try fresh asparagus and it's always sold out, yesterday was no of these days I'll find it. I have actually never tasted it fresh (only canned and hubby didn't like that at all) I did find some kale :) go green!! and a 8 pound bag of oranges for under $ lots of other fresh fruits and veggies. Good to stock up and the 5% challenge starts soon, I need to get ready for that.

We have 9 calves now so we've been getting them about one or two a day..things will pick up soon and then we'll get more a day..they were just due to start calving the day before yesterday so we're right on track :) Spent today helping with the chores, bales, twines and moving cattle around..a heifer got caught in a bale feeder so I helped get her unstuck...there's always something...

I rode the bike today and did lots of laundry and some house work. I also dyed my hair..turned out a bit lighter but since we're sticking close to one will see it but hubby..haha.

I found this idea on Pinterest..I'm always on the look out for cheap and neat ideas. Fill a jar with fresh orange peels and vinegar, put the lid on and let sit for several weeks, then strain off and dilute the liquid with water and put in a spray bottle and use as cleaner..gotta try that one out.

Also on Pinterest was a recipe for Key lime cupcakes that I brought up to daughter's yesterday..yum yum...

Well I see I'm behind doing the preps for the 5% spring challenge so that's what I'm off to do..that and make some green tea to enjoy with the hockey game...

Thanks for dropping by..Keep on Sparkin'

Hubby had to do the night checks alone 2 nights in a row so I guess it's my turn tonight...the weather has been beautiful here..the only draw back is the corrals are soo mucky!! Some places it's almost up to the top of the rubber boots...I hope I don't slip!!haha...Well good night all :)

Have you tried looking for frozen aspaargus, a little closer to fresh than the canned? I love roasted asparagus. Although I like the canned too. emoticon

3 more calves so we have 6 now...

Saturday, March 10, 2012

Hi..when I went out for the midnight check last night..still no northern lights but 2 new calves..and one cow calving....hubby got up at 3 to check her and then she finally calved by 6 we didn't get much sleep last night....

We spent the morning treating and tagging the calves and hubby shredded the bales for the herd...

I rode my bike..had missed a couple days..but got lots of walking in instead.... then after lunch hubby changed oil in my car and I did some baking... white chocolate chip macadamia nut cookies, rhubarb crisp and key lime cupcakes... some of the cupcakes are going with me to the daughter's tomorrow... it's the little girls skating carnival so I'm off bright and early to get there by lunch and then the carnival is 3 pm and then the 4 hour drive home (I'm going to let hubby do the checks tonight so I'm not too tired for the long drive)

Well, don't plan to stay up too least the time change doesn't affect me since here in Saskatchewan we don't change the time..I like the story of the native American saying...only the government would think you can make a longer blanket by cutting off the top and adding it to the bottom....ain't that the truth!!!

Hope hubby doesn't have any trouble with the calves while I'm far we haven't had to help any of them...

Well thanks for dropping by and Keep on Sparkin'

An interesting article in the Oprah magazine was the Dr.Oz one called The Pet your health benefits from having a pet...

-reduced risk of allergies, asthma, and eczema

-lower blood pressure

-a stronger heart

-improved fitness

-greater calm for alzheimer's patients

Well I should have great health since we have one house cat, one cattle dog, 20+ barn cats, 8 horses ..and should I start counting cattle..maybe not..haha..

Have a great rest of the weekend!!

That blanket story is pretty funny:)

Pets are a gift. They are so generous.

I hope you have lots of fun at your grandchildren's skating festival -- and drive safe!
