3 calves now..

Wednesday, March 07, 2012

Hi..last night got really cold so we took extra checks..I took the 3 am check and it was very cold and windy..the full moon made it so beautiful out..I almost didn't need a flashlight..no calves overnight thankfully..

We had a calf this morning while hubby was shredding bales and I was making dinner...so that makes a total of 3 :)

I had lots of fun at the birthday party with my 2 best friends..great visits and lots of laughs..tea and angel food cake :) Very fun day..

When I got home hubby was putting up a new slab wall in a corral so I helped him for awhile and then moved the cows up for the night...

Supper was quick leftover meal loaf from lunch ..then I watched a hockey game and caught up on Spark...

The weather has gotten a lot warmer so maybe not so many night checks..hubby is asleep on the couch so I'll take the last check before bed in an hour or so..

I didn't get to work on the house cleaning today..maybe tomorrow...

Thanks for dropping by and keep on Sparkin'

New life . . . Spring is in the air! Sounds like you and DH had a very productive day. Don't worry about the housework, it will always be there . . . that's what my MIL tells me anyway lol!

Farm work is never done, is it!

We're having the weirdest weather here. Tuesday morning it was -19.7 c and Wednesday it was +11.7. Today I woke up to it being +11 so who knows how warm it will get. The snow is melting away ... I did appreciate your lovely description of your moon-lit walk to the barn:) Lovely imagery.

Hope the "babies" are all good:)
Take care

3 is great! I love baby calves. Baby anything really but calves are something I see most every day so I am reminded how cute they are. We dont have any but the adjoining pasture does, and the calves are so cute and curious to come to the fence to see our horses.

Another baby calf last night..

Tuesday, March 06, 2012

Hi..when I went out for the 11;30 pm check it was raining here and there was another new baby...got hubby and we moved the pair up to the corral where the first pair was so they had a shed and straw for bedding. She's a cute little tan too.

We have red and black angus cows bred to white charolais bulls, black and red angus bulls..so the calves are all either tan colored like the first 2 or red or black.

Today I haelped more with chores and cleaning out the lean-to on the barn..we talked to son on the phone last night for his birthday and we both told him how much we missed him (especially when cleaning the barn..haha) We are getting too old for all the physical labour of ranching..but we love the lifestyle :) So great to be out in nature for our living...

I was reading in a magazine while I did my 30 minutes on the x-bike and it was an interesting article about the healing sounds of nature..
..ocean waves cure insomnia
...dolphin sounds heal disease
...whales reenergize you
...babbling brooks relieve pain
...bird songs ease anxiety..
all with links to find these sounds..I love to listen to our satellite dish tv to the nature music channel..and hear all these sounds and more...for when I'm not actually out in nature :)

Tomorrow is a close friend's birthday and another friend and I are going over in the afternoon with cake and gifts and an afternoon of visiting. All three of us have spring birthdays ..March, April and mine is May so we go to each other's place..looking forward to this outing...

I'm relaxing on the couch watching hockey tonight..just finished visiting with my sister on the phone.

Two of my three kids live in or near Saskatoon and there has been some nasty weather up there today..daughter had a stormy drive home afterwork with her 2 little ones..glad they're all home safe.

It's going to get quite cold here tonight so we'll be doing a few extra night checks, it can get really cold on the new wet babies and they will need to be moved up into the shed or maye even the barn tonight..depending on the wind..

I dug out the calving record book and the ear tags, etc so I can start with the paper work..we'll wait til we have a few more before we start tagging them, we also give them some shots of vitamins and minerals and treat their navels..then moms will get debugged too and if any mommas are missing eartags we'll retag them too. All very time consuming...and can be dangerous..the mommas can be very protective..we usually carry a stock cane just in case...we've both had some run ins with cows so we are well aware of the dangers...my first reaction is always to scream loudly and that seems to stop them in their tracks (usually) but hubby always jokes..that now they're deaf...haha.

I don't know why it was so hard to upload the picture yesterday..I have a slot on my lap top for my camera card so I did it that way and it took 5 or 6 tries before it worked..anyone else have problems and anyone have some tips..I seem to usually have these problems...

Well..better go for now..maybe make some green tea to drink during the hockey game and then head out for a cow check..the game is on til midnight..hubby is asleep on the couch...

Thanks for dropping by and for your comments on my blogs..Keep on Sparkin'

Had our first calf yesterday...

Monday, March 05, 2012

Hi..we had our first calf last night so we are offically calving :) All went well and she's a little tan cutie..I tried to upload a pic but don't know where it went?? Maybe I'll try again at the end.

We have 140 cows to calve this year and they are all beef cattle. We have 13 quarters of land that is mostly pasture and tame hay for feed for the cows and some of the other land is broke for farm but we seed oats and then bale or swath graze it. This all keeps us fairly busy and hubby also runs a community pasture in the spring, summer and fall...

Today I went out to help with chores before breakfast and check on the new baby. Then I went to town for mail, parts, groceries and water...then helped hubby clean barns for the afternoon so I have some sore muscles tonight...then after supper I helped with more chores and walked to bring the herd up to the yard for tonight..

Today is my son's birthday..he's the youngest and is 25 :) wow how can that be when I'm just 18?? haha...and my oldest daughter is 30!! yikes...some how part of the blog got posted..at least it didn't disappear like it does some time..well I'll just finish this up...

Found out the little granddaughter's skating carnival is this Sunday so I'll be off on another road trip..by myself...

I didn't have much time to do much for myself today so I'll have to catch up on my 40 bags tomorrow...

Well I think I'll try to upload the picture again so you can see the new baby..

Thanks for dropping by and keep on Sparkin'

Congratulations on your new little calf. That's wonderful news! Can't wait to see a picture.

No wonder you are so busy all the time with the number of cows you have and the amount of land. I know it's a lot of hard work and it certainly keeps you busy. I'm originally from Nebraska. We lived in Omaha away from the farms and stockyards but always liked to drive through and see the farms and cattle as we traveled through the state. There are still some farms where I live now north of Chicago. I see horses and cows and I really enjoy it. It's a long ride into work each day but nice to live in an area where there is still open land and farming.

Have a great week and happy birthday to your son!
