Had our first calf yesterday...

Monday, March 05, 2012

Hi..we had our first calf last night so we are offically calving :) All went well and she's a little tan cutie..I tried to upload a pic but don't know where it went?? Maybe I'll try again at the end.

We have 140 cows to calve this year and they are all beef cattle. We have 13 quarters of land that is mostly pasture and tame hay for feed for the cows and some of the other land is broke for farm but we seed oats and then bale or swath graze it. This all keeps us fairly busy and hubby also runs a community pasture in the spring, summer and fall...

Today I went out to help with chores before breakfast and check on the new baby. Then I went to town for mail, parts, groceries and water...then helped hubby clean barns for the afternoon so I have some sore muscles tonight...then after supper I helped with more chores and walked to bring the herd up to the yard for tonight..

Today is my son's birthday..he's the youngest and is 25 :) wow how can that be when I'm just 18?? haha...and my oldest daughter is 30!! yikes...some how part of the blog got least it didn't disappear like it does some time..well I'll just finish this up...

Found out the little granddaughter's skating carnival is this Sunday so I'll be off on another road myself...

I didn't have much time to do much for myself today so I'll have to catch up on my 40 bags tomorrow...

Well I think I'll try to upload the picture again so you can see the new baby..

Thanks for dropping by and keep on Sparkin'

Third try of the pic...

Congratulations on your new little calf. That's wonderful news! Can't wait to see a picture.

No wonder you are so busy all the time with the number of cows you have and the amount of land. I know it's a lot of hard work and it certainly keeps you busy. I'm originally from Nebraska. We lived in Omaha away from the farms and stockyards but always liked to drive through and see the farms and cattle as we traveled through the state. There are still some farms where I live now north of Chicago. I see horses and cows and I really enjoy it. It's a long ride into work each day but nice to live in an area where there is still open land and farming.

Have a great week and happy birthday to your son!

Hubby's out to check the herd before we go to bed..

Monday, March 05, 2012

Hi..a few more cows are looking closer tonight so hubby's gone out to check now. We were watching a DVD and I didn't get this blog started very'll just be a quick one.

Hubby fixed the light and worked on a couple other wiring projects today. I did more sorting, made homemade yogurt and a pie for hubby...all around when the power was shut off..haha.

Tomorrow is our son's birthday and talked to him on the phone this afternoon. He watched some of the brier curling (it's in Saskatoon this year) and the tranmission went out of his truck..getting it looked at tomorrow and a friend is giving him a ride to work..not a great birthday gift...

I also did a major vacuuming in the living room and moved all the furniture, etc and still haven't found the's starting to drive me crazy!!

Well it's been a long and fruitful day...better sign off and get some sleep..who knows what tomorrow has in store..maybe our first calf?? At least the weather is nice now...

Thanks for dropping by and keep on Sparkin'

For the Ipod, have you really looked in the crevices in the furniture, where the cushions meet with the frame of the couch? Did she take it anywhere, maybe she lost it somewhere else? Good Luck.

Hi . How many heads of cattle do you and hubby have ?. are they primary milk or beef cattle ? we used to have a few heads of cattle . kind of miss them but the cost was not in our budget anymore . Had to buy hay and feed so it became a hugh problem . hope yours are all well .

Down on the Ranch...

Saturday, March 03, 2012 was a cold crisp day and this morning while I rode my x bike for 30 minutes in front of the living room picture window the snow just sparkled like diamonds!! Just beautiful..what a great way to start my day!!

I did more house sorting and helped with chores and the shop, too. Hubby tried to fix one of the yard lights in a corral so I was gopher and walking up and down the hill, turning the power off and on and bringing supplies as needed...but the light still doesn't work so on to plan B tomorrow...

More cows are looking close but still no of these days :)

Still going green in house and food choices..finding the odd green thing in my sorting and am setting them out for something different for foods today include green tea, green beans, celery, romaine lettuce ....

A Sparker wrote that they use a card folded in half daily for tracking..on the outside write your goals..on the inside keep track of your food, water, exercise, I've been using this idea since March 1..I like it...always love to find new ideas to motivate me..

I am looking forward to the Spring 5% Challenge which starts March 17th :) Time to SPRING into hard..aim higher...

We didn't make it to the fund raiser supper tonight but we had donated items for the auction and bought the supper tickets for the donation, feels good to stay home after so many road trips...

Well I'm just finishing a bottle of water and watching a hockey game..tonight is Telemiracle in Saskatchewan (a tv telethon) From 11pm til 1 am kids from our local town are the number turners..:) May stay up for some of it...even tho I have been going to bed by 11 pm most usual hubby has been asleep on the couch for hours already..haha...

Thanks for dropping by and for your comments on my blogs and spark page... Keep on Sparkin'...

Down on the Ranch during calving..

Friday, March 02, 2012

Hi..So far no calves yet but a lot of the cows are looking close...hubby shredded bales for the herd today and then we worked on cleaning up the quonset and moved stuff to the seacan..also burned lots of junk :)

I worked a bit on the house, too..and filled my daily garbage bag...biked for 30 minutes..tracked my food, got lots of spark points..ate some green foods... spinach, peas, apples..yum yum...

We have more snow now than we've had all winter..snowed and blowed lots yesterday..we went in to town for the mail, etc..

I shovelled off the front deck, didn't have time to snowshoe today..maybe tomorrow. We have tickets to go to a fund raiser supper tomorrow night but lots more snow is forecast so we may not attend..

So far we haven't started getting up yet for the night checks but hubby said that will start pretty soon...we take turns taking the night checks...usually one a night unless it's cold or somebody looks close to calving. We have 140 cows to calve this that does keep us busy...

I love going out for the night checks..especially if there are northern favorite thing in nature...I am a real nature lover and like to be outside...

Well, time to get back to the hockey game..the Oilers are tied at 0 in the 2nd...

Thanks for dropping by and keep on Sparkin' emoticon emoticon
