Hi..this will be a quick blog as it's almost's warmed up at bit temp wise but the wind was crisp..I went out this morning and helped with the twine on the bales and was cold on the face and fingers!! Hubby said it was as cold today as it was most of last week cuz the wind was up...

I was going to snowshoe after chores but decided to wait til it warms up more...I rode the bike for 30 mins for a total of 60 mins of exercise today...I had cold cereal for breakfast, had eggs, bacon and toast for lunch with some of my homemade tuned out pretty good...and supper was oven fried chicken and sweet potatoes with salad and a little sliver of the black bottom pie for dessert..I also made homemade bread in the bread machine this afternoon..and I had a slice of that for a my calories for the day were full so when hubby wanted beer I even passed tonight!! wow

I also cleaned out my pantry looking for onion flakes for the instant soup recipe but couldn't find any so I made it anyway and substituded onion powder...Keep on Sparkin'

The wind has blown the aroma of your baked bread right to my doorstep. It had a ways to go, but it made it. Now I won't have to bake any bread myself as the aroma of yours has satisfied that part of me that wanted the smell home made bread.
I always enjoy reading your blogs. Today I have eaten, oatmeal, 2 fresh baked peanut butter cookies and a cup of vegetable soup and a ham sandwich and my tummy is so full!!! This evening I am going to bake some fish felts and make mac and cheese for Jeff. I will have to finish my bowl of soup because I promised myself more veggies today and I am determined to have them. We got a lilttle over sevin inches of rain last night so everything here is a little water logged.
God bless you, my friend

WooHoo..the scale is moving in the right direction...

Saturday, January 21, 2012

Hi..weigh in today for 5% challenge and I'm down 2 pounds...getting back to basics is helping!!

Today I tracked all my food..drank all my water..took vits...rode bike for 60 mins!!
Breakfast was cream of wheat, lunch was a beef wrap with cheese, salsa and cabbage salad ( I heated the wrap and it was kind of better?) Supper was a small steak, a small baked potato, some beets and more cabbage salad..dessert was a grapefruit.

I'm trying to make yogurt today..from a recipe book I've had for a long time..not sure if it's turning out or not...maybe I'll have to put it in the fridge to thicken up or use it as a yogurt drink..haha..I had some milk that was ready to spoil so I needed to use it up..the rest I made a black bottom chocolate pie for the hubby...

This is the last week of the 5% starfish challenge..this week we get points for not using salt at the table..that's never a problem for me as I never use salt at the table or for cooking or baking..that's probably why meals out always give me salt overload..that and my lips totally react to salt by getting chapped almost from chin to nose!! ugh..any ideas for chapped lips that are a food reaction? tomatoes and vinegar also give the same reaction :(..good thing I'm not vain and really don't care what I look like as long as I'm healthy :)

I still am enjoying Pinterest..found so many great things there!! Found a great recipe there...with trying to keep with cutting down on salt..I find that if I make my own mixes they can be salt free or at least lower salt...

This is for a powdered mix that can be stored in your pantry and replaces creamed canned soups..

Condensed Cream of Something Soup Mix

1 cup powdered skim milk
3/4 cup corn starch
1/4 cup bouillon powder (chicken, beef or veggie..look for low sodium)
4 Tbsp dried minced onion
1 tsp dried basil
1 tsp dried thyme or parsley
1 tsp pepper

to prepare take 1/3 cup of the dry mix and add 1 1/4 cup water cook until thickened
use in recipes as is or thin for soup and add desired veggies ex mushrooms, celery; or chicken or cheese.
Some ideas are to use in mac and cheese..add extra veggies and chicken or bacon.

I haven't tried this yet but I think it will really beat all the salt and additives is most canned soups..and low calorie too.

Well..I better sign off..just watching the end of the hockey game..Edmonton is losing to Calgary :(

Thanks for dropping by and for all your comments..I really appreciate all your support..Keep on Sparkin'

Way to go on the weight loss!

Thanks for sharing the "cream of" recipe! Those canned soups have so much sodium. I was looking at bouillon at the grocery yesterday, though, and they have a ton of sodium themselves. May still be less sodium than the canned soups, though.

Last blog in the challenge..

Friday, January 20, 2012

Hi..this is the last day for the 5% starfish challenge..this week was the challenge to blog daily and comment on 10 blogs..this has been a fun part of the challenge and a way to get to know more Sparkers and some of their tips and struggles and jsut about their lives...

Starting tomorrow our challenge is to cut out adding salt at the table!! Since I never add salt to anything at the table and never even add salt when cooking or baking, I think I'll find this an easy part of the challenge..the last fast 8 weeks have flown by..for one thing I haven't lost the 10 pounds I hoped but it has helped the dreaded holiday gain stay with a few pounds...

It's still very cold here but hubby ventured out to town and got the mail, drinking water, and a few groceries..I needed milk, bananas and o yeah he bought apple strudel, I don't think that was on the list!! haha. I got 4 new magazines and most have the heart theme for February and how to have a healthy heart ( I noticed Oprah has a blackboard on the

I did my 30 minutes on the x bike and 15 mins strength and 15 mins of snow shovelling and got the snow off the front deck and yes I did go out side..woohoo!! I tracked my meals and drank the water and took the vits..I added B12 to my stack since it's supposed to increase energy..I read a neat article on supplements and said the 4 most important ones are Vit D, the fish oil one and mustard and tomato sauce!! So here's to cooking with more mustard and tomato sauce.

Today was another cream of wheat morning (I had a crappy sleep..woke at about 3 and tossed and turned for hours till I feel back to sleep, then slept til 9!!) So I had a bad headache today and feel like I'm coming down with a head cold..feel a little better tonight. Lunch was chicken broth and veggies, a mini wrap with thin sliced roast beef, spinach and horseraddish and yogurt ...Supper was a burger and ww bun, cabbage and carrot salad and yes I broke down and ate one of those apple thingies...all within calorie limits..bsck to those mini wraps..the little tortillas came in a huge pack..5 dozen and this is the first one I've had..and it was awlful..any suggestions of the rest? Maybe if I toast them? Maybe enchiladas or quesadililas..anyting is better with melted cheese...haha :)

So I think I've done quite well with my challenge to be more energetic..track food..make healthy food choices...drink water...take supplements..exercize..and blog!!

Thanks s00 much for dropping by and for your comments..keep on Sparkin'..

I'm going to close with this that I found on my niece's fb page..from Shape magazine

Hey - Donna - the tortillas aren't too bad if you heat them a bit, you can always put a bit of shredded cheese on them as they heat in the microwave for 30 seconds or so. Another idea is to spread a bit of butter or margarine on them, sprinkle with cinnamon and a bit of sugar or Spenda or Stevia, then cut into triangle and heat in the oven until crisp. Can use as a dipper with fruit salsa or yogurt or whatever or eat as is....

Have a fantastic day emoticon

Canadian weather poem...

Thursday, January 19, 2012

Hi..saw this cute poem on fb today..yeah it's still cold here!!

It's winter in Canada
And the gentle breezes blow
Seventy kilometers an hour
At thirty-five below.

Oh, how I love Canada
When the snow is up to your butt
You take a breath of winter
And your nose gets frozen shut.

Yes, the weather here is wonderful
So I guess I'll hang around
I could never leave Canada
I'm frozen to the bloody ground!!
-Jay Juniper

I thought it was funny..gave me my morning chuckle :) But I do love Canada, winter and all!!

Today was another hot cereal for breakfast day..I tracked all my food..I had a spinach and roast beef and veggie salad for lunch, and steamed fish, corn and salad for supper...had a few extra calories left and used them on beer and chips..not the healthiest choices..tomorrow will be a better day!! warmer too hopefully..

Did 40 minutes on the x bike and made lots of fires in the wood stove...did some of the farm books..did some cleaning..typical day but stayed inside..I wonder when I last went outside?
We were going to go to town for the mail this afternoon but the car wouldn't start even though it was plugged in and hubby tried to use the battery charger.. :( The trucks would have started but it's too hard on the diesels if they don't have to run... Don't quite have cabin fever yet!! Hubby's missing the mail tho..

I did some reading and was going to watch Dr. Oz to see the Spark segment and I turned to the Seatle ch and it was not on due to the storm warnings..hope that storm doesn't move this way..had some phone calls from my sister, oldest daughter and son :)'s been a lazy day and hope I make better progress tomorrow..

Thanks for dropping by and for all your comments..the 5% challenge has been fun to meet lots of new spark friends and have new inspiration...Keep on Sparkin'

I love our winters in Canada! Yes, they can be cold (my dogs lift their feet after about 3 minutes right now!) but as long as you are dressed for it, there is nothing better than taking a walk in the winter here. The air is crisp, fresh, and you get some much needed sunshine, even if it is only on your nose.

Brrr it's cold here...-40 with the wind chill or worse...

Wednesday, January 18, 2012

Hi..hope where ever you are you are nice and warm...we're having a COLD snap!! I'm snuggled on the loveseat with a blanket and a cup of blueberry ginseng tea and a fire roaring in the wood stove and a hockey game on...

Except for the cold weather, I've had a good day..hubby did minimum chores so was inside lots...we luckily don't have to go anywhere when it's so cold and hubby feed cattle for a few days so won't have to start the tractor until it warms Fri or Sat. Then we will need drinking water, mail and some milk..and probably some cabin fever relief..haha.

Actually if we don't go away and I have all my meals at home I do way better and I've tracked all my food and stayed in calorie range. I slept in, then made hot cereal for breakfast..hubby wanted cream of wheat. Lunch was a huge spinach salad and a small portion of chili. Supper was roast beef (the oven helped keep the house warm) with onions, carrots, parsnips and potatoes and gravy for hubby :)

I rode my x bike for 30 minutes and did some reading ..revisited my Energy Addict book by Jon Gordon..I like to reread him when I need more energy :) So inspirational...His first book is 101 Physical, Mental and Spiritual Ways to Energize Your Life!!

The first few are...
1 value your body
2 feed your body life
3 visit a health food store
4 eat more earlier
5 eat breakfast
6 cut the caffeine
7 drink green tea
8 grab a snack
9 don't skip lunch
10 drink water to survive and thrive
11 sip small amounts of chilled water every 30 minutes
12 get nuts
13 soup up your life
14 replace your candy bowl with a fruit bowl
15 trash the hydrogenated oils

lots of great ways to refuel, recharge and refocus!! and energize :)

The chinese calendar says this is the year for success and happiness so we are all destined to succeed and be happy!! Love it!!

Thanks so much for dropping by for a chat and a cup of tea..keep on Sparkin'

I just may go and read and comment on some more blogs..I'm really enjoying this part of the challenge!!

Thanks for your comment on my blog. I LOVE it that you've started a compost pail! A couple of my neighbors feed our building's kitchen scraps to worm colonies in bins in our basement.     At one place where I lived, my pickup truck, my only vehicle, went dead in Winter's cold--battery utterly quit. So, I got rides to Church, ate what I had stored, drank the well water, mailed checks, killed a few chickens for meat, and heated with dead trees--I had my nice small chainsaw then and a good chainsaw file. Once it warmed up, the truck started right up and gave me no hassles!

I love herbal/fruity teas. I've learned to make more soups, too. I like Chef Meg's vegetable stock recipe, though I add some hot peppers and marjoram and make sure to get plenty of button mushrooms in it.
