Day one of 5% winter challenge as a Starfish :)

Hi..I'm feeling my way around this challenge and hope to be helpful to my team..lots to learn and to do so I'll just flail along for now.

It seems like a very active team and challenge so hope I can keep up..

So far I've entered my starting weight and tracked my exercise..so far so good.

I've met some other Starfish and if nothing else that will be worth it :)

December 5% winter challenge..I'm a Starfish...

Hi..I joined the 5% winter challenge and we get in groups and I'm a Starfish..I've also been assigned a mentor and a sibling. This new challenge has me excited and motivated..it starts Dec 3 with weigh-ins.

I have a few pre-challenge assignments..so I thought I'd do a few of them here...

Make December a turning point in your life...

My 5% winter challenge commitment...

emoticondust off the scale and get out workout clothes..done

emoticonplan exercise...30 mins daily on Xbike and as much other various exercise I can fit in..

emoticondecide on a diet..stay in calorie range and track daily..include 8 glasses of water, lots of fruits and veggies, tea and way less treats than I have been eating!!

emoticonrecord x mins, living the good life points and weekly weigh-ins

emoticonhow will you support your team? I want to get to know lots of the other starfish and offer them support..like check in daily..give goodies..

Next assignment...update spark page..I'm working on that..

and the next..list reasons to lose weight...biggest one is to be healthy and happy..look better...feel good about myself..

#4 list all your trigger foods..this time of year..sweets, cookies..any time of year..ice cream.. meat...baking of all kinds

#5 know your numbers..to lose 5% will be around 10 -15 pounds..

#6 tidy the fridge, pantry, make a shopping list, plan diet...well I just put down the new lino in the kitchen so we have our new fridge in place and I can't wait to fill it with great healthy foods. I'd been holding off grocery shopping until we got it in the kitchen. The fridge has neat fruit and veggie bins on the door that are clear and will be great for my plan!! My shopping list will include lots of fresh fruits and veggies, whole grains and lean protein...

#7 ways to cut calories..some of my favorite ways are to have oatmeal and dates for breakfasts, buy a huge bag of spinach and put big handfuls in baggies for salads and have baggies of prepared veggies to add to the salads...then have tea in evenings instead of snacking...

#8 team assignment..get to know your team mates..introduce yourself..done..also made some new friends..visited pages etc..

#9 List what has not worked in the past..diet reason..I just eat too much
strategy..portion control
diet reason...get preoccupied with life and just eat whatever
strategy..commit to healthy eating

exercise reason...get preoccupied with life and don't do planned exercises
strategy...commit to following the exercise plan!!

Well..that is my pre challenge assignments!!

Hi..I'm microwaving a cup of water to make some chai tea...I've already had beer and am watching a hockey game..what else.

I've had a busy day..I started Christmas baking and made 11 different things so I'm more than half done :)

Now for the November goal recap... emoticon


emoticonRefresh my page..I never did get a tea pic up but did refresh it


emoticonTea daily...I did drink tea almost every day and some times several cups..on toward making tea drinking a habit. Quite often I make tea in a travel mug for on the road


emoticonBlog daily..well I did blog lots but not daily


emoticonGo back to basics and track food, etc...well I started out strong and then missed quite a few days toward the end of the month


emoticonLog in and get spark points..hey I haven't missed a day and I'm way over the 1000 points so I have less than 400 to get in December to get to level 14..woohoo me :)


emoticonExercise daily..I've been back on my bike most days and have done lots of walking and chores and other farm work..just yesterday I forked manure for over an hour to help hubby clean a shed..and I bet you thought living on a farm was glamorous..haha


emoticonEat Nov/fall foods..I have had oatmeal microwaved with a couple chopped dates for breakfast for every morning in November..I really like to have auto meals and I really like the date oatmeal :) I've also had lots of homemade soups and fall root veggies..I love sweet potatoes, parsnips, turnips and carrots a lot


emoticonGiving projects to family and friends..I have done lots of that in person and lots on Spark too..gave goodies and comments and encouragement to Spark friends and Thanksgiving wishes to my American friends


emoticonSimplify..my house..my belongings..my life..get balance..this is a work in progress and I have been working towards these goals


emoticonHouse projects..got back to painting from last fall, I painted my porch and ceiling and thoroughly cleaned it; painted the inside of the kitchen cupbaords; painted the ceiling in the family room; painted the basement stairs and landing...we also have new lino for kitchen, porch and bathroom and a new fridge for the kitchen to put in when we do the lino..maybe tomorrow???


emoticonStart Christmas...that is going great..I have the outdoor lights all up and the rest of the outside decorations up; the cards are almost finished... just have a few more to address and then add the letters (all done yesterday) and a picture; over half of the shopping is done and I did over half of the Christmas baking today.

Well all in all November has helped me move toward a healthier life..I've inched a bit closer to my ticker weight but still a way to go. I've joined the 5% winter challenge and hope to jump start some weight loss..I'm a STARFISH..that's one of the sub groups..more on that in a separate blog and also in December goal blog...

    You've accomplished a most impressive list of goals in November: I so need to do some painting around the house, and just can't make time right now. But you're an inspiration!! That date oatmeal sounds great too: and like you, I prefer "auto meals"!!

    By writing down all of your goals and projects, you're sure to get all or at least many of them accomplished. That's the way to do it. Based on your recap, you have had a very productive November and well on your way with your Christmas baking too. emoticon Good for you!

I've just starting drinking tea a little more this year but haven't tried chai tea yet. I am curious so I'll think about taking the plunge.

Good luck with your December goals too. I know that you are positive and determined so you can do it.

another week has flown by...

Hi..it seems as the end of the year gets closer the weeks fly by faster and faster. I have just a quick update...It's been a week when I can finally stay home lots and hubby has been working on repairing fences and corrals so doesn't need my help for awhile so I've been dong some of my own stuff.

Our son came home on the weekend to go deer hunting with hubby..it was really cold and they didn't get any deer yet, son might come back down again next weekend....

On Monday I washed all the windows, screens and curtains and some light fixtures. Yesterday I went to town for mail, banking, other errands and groceries and drinking water. It's really warmed up here..melting..so I was able to put up the Christmas lights and outdoor decorations..so glad that's done before it turns cold again. Today I painted some of the insides of the kitchen cupboards, painted in the 2 porches and did some more cleaning...and did lots and lots of laundry...I was way behind!!

I was just figuring out how much water the two of us go through in a week..we haul drinking water from a public well and get about 4 five gallon jugs a week so we each drink 10 gallons of water weekly..the water is used only for drinking and for coffee..all the cooking etc is done with tap water..We do get lots of fluids..I need to make that less coffee and more tea!!! or just plain water.... :)

How are your Christmas preparations coming? I have all my cards (bought last Jan for 1/2 price at Walmart) letter paper ( bought last week at the $ store) picked up my stamps yesterday..now to write the letter and and take a picture and make some copies..I really like to send cards. I've picked up most of the ingredients for baking and have quite a few gifts so far..maybe half or more...I feel that things are progressing fine!

So far I have 3 Christmas get togethers planned and they are all the first week of December...a supper and ladies night out with friends and shopping: hubby's work party and a get together for lunch with 2 high school classmates that live close..this is hopefully the start of a new tradition... Family Christmas get together will be a different day than Christmas as my 2 granddaughters will spent this year at their Dad's....

Well this has rambled on and is not a quick blog after all, haha

Where has the week gone???

Hi..I've been missing blogging for about a week now..last Friday daughter called to say her and the granddaughters were coming for a visit..so Friday am was spent getting the spare rooms ready (they tend to be dumping grounds so it was a BIG workout) Then in the afternoon a neighbor helped us haul the cattle home from the far away pasture.

The company arrived after supper :) We had a great time..daughter went home Saturday and huby and I brought the girls home on Monday..they didn't have school Fri or Mon..Saturday we worked on the fence around the oil lease and Sunday we sorted and hauled the last 12 calves we want to sell for this year. The girls came along to Assiniboia with us. Then Tuesday hubby and I went to Assiniboia to watch the sale and get the cheque. Yesterday we took both trucks to Weyburn for service..the Dodge needed an oil change and the Ford needed to go in for major repairs as it's been acting up during bale and cattle hauling..it needs work on the injectors..diesels are so expensive to fix :(

That was too many days to be busy and too many meals away from home..I missed a whole week tracking food so my November goal to track daily is toast :( Also to blog daily :( I have been logging in and getting the points and I'm at about 1000 left til my next level so I'm ahead of schedule there. Tea also took a hit as I only had tea a couple times in the last week.

Between all that company and road trips we finished the lease fence and hubby went around the fence for the next fall grazing..the main herd is about finished up north. We will be moving then tomorrow, then off to Weyburn to get the truck if it's ready, then son is coming home for the weekend for deer hunting...

..no rest for the wicked....

Winter has arrived with full force..we've had a few days of snow and some blowing snow. Tonight and tomorrow and actually all weekend is forecast to be really cold -20 C and -30 with the wind chill....and more snow, too. Then a bit of a warm up for next week..I hope so since I didn't get my Christmas lights up on the house yet...

The Christmas preps are coming along good..every time I go some place I do a bit of shopping, I like to spread it out so it's not all at once!!

Well, I had peppermint tea tonight and am ready to get back to normal around here, what ever that is..haha..

I read in a magazine that ginseng tea will shorten a cold or flu..just have 2 cups a day..so far I haven't been able to find any tho....I do have a cold but I'm sure it will be gone by the time I find the tea haha...

    Time is flying fast here, too. we aren't taking any calves until spring so now we have to feed em thru the winter.. we only have 8 calves, 9 cows, one bull and one steer plus my two horses..
My son surprised me today, so I can understand how ya felt to have your kids visit. have a happy turkey day.

    It seems to me that each week goes faster than the one before! I love reading about your life on the ranch. Nice that you had your daughter and granddaughters visiting. Is your daughter feeling pretty much recovered now?

I had a lovely "daughters week-end" too. My daughter from Amsterdam was in Toronto on business, so I got to have lunch with her today. My older daughter, who lives near Hamilton, came in to meet us too. We will all be together at Christmas as well. Third daughter was here over-night last night because she was in a parade today with her father. She plays the bass drum, he's a piper, and they are able to play together quite often at special events. She is in two bands in Toronto, he is in the one here in town.

Like you, I've been doing little bits of Christmas shopping. Much more fun to do it that way, I think.

Next week-end DD#3 (the drummer), her partner and his 3 1/2 year old twin boys will come here to go on the Santa Train with us, then put up our tree.

Isn't it a wonderful time of year?

    My goodness, it's so interesting to follow along on your ranch life! I certainly understand how hard it must be to stay on your Spark track. Hope you find some lovely tea -- ginseng is good but there are so many kinds of herbal teas. Are there any health food stores near you? They always have good cold remedies.
