busy 24 hours...up to 13 calves..home from carnival..

Sunday, March 13, 2011

Hi..today wasn't much of a day of rest!! When I went out to check cows at 11:30pm last night I found a cold little newborn baby so got hubby to help put them into the barn...We finally went to bed after midnight and we were both back up at 4:30 with more calves...I felt bad leaving hubby swamped with new babies but I left for the long drive to granddaughter's skating carnival at about 9:30 am. It was quite stormy and ground drifting until Regina, then the roads were better.

I stopped for a quick roast beef sandwich at my favorite stop along the way for lunch..then bought a giant oatmeal date filled cookie for a treat..ate 1/2 and saved rest for the way home..yumm (oats and dates..at least some nutritional value right) The carnival was fun, it was from 2 to 4 and then left for the drive home right after..didn't plan to stop anywhere but blew a back tire south of Regina so that delayed me..luckily a family stopped to help..they were from Ukraine and couldn't speak English..hey..I'm not making this up!! Then I had to drive home under 80 kph cuz of the donut! I finally got home after 8:30 pm.

Meanwhile..hubby has lots of calves so we're up to 13 now, he had to move some pairs out of the barn, to make room for new ones and managed to completely break down the tractor again!! He just got it fixed yesterday!!!

I had put chicken and BBQ sauce into the crock pot before I left and hubby was just frying up some potatoes for him so we sat down to a quick supper..I also brought him home flapper pie for a treat..okay, I admit I bought a piece for me too..it travelled so nice on the floor on the passenger side..individual slices on little plates covered with plastic wrap..out of the sun..until I stopped too fast at a traffic light in Regina and my coffee thermos rolled over them!!! What a day!!

I am completely pooped..hubby is napping on the couch..I'm gonna finish this and then check for more babies!! At least the weather is kind of spring like here now :) boy am I ready for spring!! and a good night's sleep..wonder what tomorrow will bring???

I may have to go to Weyburn or local town for a new car tire and to mail hubby's work deposits..that and we have lots of calves to tag and give needles and rings..etc!!

Well thanks for stopping by..and this is just the first week of calving..I think I'm too tired for tea, or tracking food and exercise..will catch up tomorrow..Keep on Sparkin'

Don't those cows know to breed when their calves can be born in the spring or summer.
Next year give them each a calendar and mark out the days they can't play house with each other.
Hopefully they can read calendars.

Hope you can get a good nights sleep, sounds like your not getting enough and keeping so busy.

No suggestions on the ear, except maybe an ibuprofen.

I'm not surprised that your helpers were Ukrainians. Are they new settlers in your area?

I hope you get some rest.

Sorry I missed yesterday's blog...blizzard's over..up to 6 calves now...

Saturday, March 12, 2011

Hi..We were so busy yesterday with the blizzard and chores that I didn't get to blog, or track anything so tonight is catch up day...just sitting on the couch and enjoying a quart of water and Sparkin' :)

Thought I'd post the blog first..yesterday we had a horrible blizzard here. It was very bad..couldn't even see across the yard. Was a real struggle to get the cows fed. I had to use an ax to chop a gate open so hubby could drive the tractor in to feed. Then I had to shovel to open a gate to move cows, then struggle against the wind to close it behind them, then take off twine on bales and open the gate again.. already needed to shovel it out again!! then chase the cows to the bales and finally try to shut the gate again against the wind!!! Boy what a work out..I was soaked in sweat when I got in and had ice built up on my face..today I have a horrible ear ache :( Then after supper we had 2 calves so helped get them in the barn... so we were both out for the 11pm check. Hubby checked more often in the night and woke me for the 5 am check and then I couldn't get back to sleep when I got back into the house :( Well I'm sure I used up lots of calories yesterday!!!

For lunch I had the last of my green soup (I'm looking for suggestions for next weeks green soup..) Supper was a frozen chicken pizza and beer :) yum yum. Today's lunch was a deli thin sliced roast beef sandwich on whole wheat bread and horseradish and spinach with beets and snap peas on the side..got my green!! Also had cantaloupe and an orange...supper was a small rib steak with a side romaine and mushroom salad and some frozen peas and carrots..for dessert tonight I had a pear yogurt..never had that before and it was quite good :)

Went to town this afternoon for mail and shells for coyote hunting..also stopped for coffee at a neighbors (timed for hubby to be finished chores without me for a change!!)

Tomorrow I'm off to oldest daughter's for the granddaughter's skating carnival..I know it's a 3 1/2 hour drive there and a 3 1/2 hour drive home for a 2 hour show where the little girls will be on the ice for about 10 minutes each.. It's a grandma thing :) can't wait to see them again!! And I need a bit of a break from the ranch....

Well that's about all for now..hopefully Monday I'll have time to take some baby calf pictures and do a recap of March's goals..I'm feeling right on track and the pounds are slipping away :) just about at my ticker again!!

Thanks for stopping by and for all your kind comments..after I finish my quart of water I'll make a little pot of green tea...Keep on Sparkin'

My green soup of choice is split pea. Just love it!! Our local store owner makes his own ham and bacon and other meat goodies (I just had one of his Garlic Bratwursts for supper) and sells packages of bacon trimmings that are really quite meaty. I cook them up for the split pea soup (they are also good with great northern bean soup).

Have you ever tried soup with corned beef, cabbage, carrots, onions, and potatoes? It can be made like a stew or more watered down to be soupier. Use lots of cabbage to make it green. Rye-Krisp makes a good cracker to eat with it.

Fortunately we missed out on the blizzard, it was just to the east of us, although we did have the wind. I'm glad that you and your babies came through it just fine. It sure doesn't make me long for days on the ranch...

Safe drive!! Your granddaughters will be thrilled that you are there!!

Easy green soup is: spinach/watercress/arugula with chicken broth and plain fat free yogourt whirred in the food processor??

Donna, Your March has sure come in like a lion so it had better start shaping up and be ready for the lamb.
I don't envy you the work you and your hubby do. I admire the both of you. I know what you mean about the grandkids. Mine have a bad habit of waiting until the last minure to let me know what is going on and then I ususally can't go. It seems like anymore, I have to plan everything.
I am getting ready to get my tea and watch some TV.
God bless you and yours.

Beautiful spring day and 2 more calves :)

Thursday, March 10, 2011

Hi..it really did feel like spring today, they're forecasting colder again for the next couple days and then back to the spring weather :)

We had 2 more calves today and both are fine, the ears on the earlier calf seem to be okay too so that's great news. I took the 11 pm check last night and then helped with chores this morning. Then I went into town for mail, recycling and a few supplies and drinking water.

For lunch I had more of my green soup and a grapefruit for dessert, supper was pork chops and a spinach salad..the frozen lettuce (ice cream) from last night wasn't too bad and I had frozen mushrooms (ice cream?) on my salad..I need to make room in my crisper for the veggies or they'll all freeze :( I need to rearrange my fridge!!! Snack today was pistachios..yum yum. I need to get back on my bike but it's been too hectic here. Hubby helped carry the family room furniture to the basement and I've been working down there. We also carted the old carpet to the junk pile :)

Just before supper I helped bed the lean-to and barn stalls and helped get the 2 new pairs into the barn..it's very icy in the corrals so lots of slipping and sliding was happening!!

I'm ready to relax for a couple hours with a little pot of green tea before my 11pm cow check..got a new magazine in the mail..looking forward to reading that.. hubby's on the couch reading his mail too. My new magazine is Country Woman and one of the cover stories is "follow your dream" :) Love it !! The back cover has a tea poem and picture..this mag is perfect for me!!

Thanks for stopping by for a chat and some tea..keep on Sparkin'

Sounds like your getting your house in order and really enjoying the new furniture.

No more calves yet...

Wednesday, March 09, 2011

Hi..we had a beautiful day :) Back to cold again tonight but not too bad. Took the 11pm check last night and the 7 am check this morning but no more calves yet. I helped hubby with chores..we used the little tractor since he had no time to put the tractor together..neighbor needed help with his well and pump so he spent the afternoon down there.

While he was gone I checked the cows and burned some garbage..mostly his bale twine, and carried some stuff from the house...shop rags, garden shed stuff, etc. I did lots of sorting in the basement, caught up on some laundry and made space to move the old family room furniture down there and just have the love seat from the living room in there. Right now I have the love seat on top of the sofa and all the old sofa cushions on top of that..kitty likes to sleep way up there and makes me think of the princess and the pea :)

When hubby came home we checked on the service rig that's back on our oil well and went coyote hunting..saw one but missed it...

I had my green soup of the week for lunch and beef, sweet potato, green beans and romaine lettuce salad for supper..the fridge froze my lettuce so I just pretended it was ice cream :)

After I finish this blog..I'm gonna go track my food and exercise and make some green tea and maybe play a few computer games until the next night cow check. Tomorrow is supposed to be even nicer than today..I'll be off to town as hubby needs the mail for some work related papers..and I'll maybe take in some recycling too..gotta keep going green!!!

Thanks for stopping by for a chat and some tea..take care..keep on sparkin'

And how is lettuce flavored ice cream? I had to snicker when I read that one.

All the weather people are predicting some much nicer weather here for the next week or so. I sure hope you get to share in our good weather. Spring has to start sometime..... doesn't it?

2nd calf last night...

Tuesday, March 08, 2011

Hi..we had another calf last night, it was just born when I went out at 11pm to check but once hubby and I got her in the barn her little ears were frozen :( at least she's alive...2 down..138 to go...

Thanks for all the nice comments on our new furniture..it is really, really comfy and it's huge with high backs so is really comfy...the cat didn't come with it..she was already here :) our little Ginger kitty..I noticed that the blinds look pink and they're actually the same color as the walls..just took the picture with the sun behind the blinds!! Should take some more at night.

Went to town to get the tractor parts..they finally arrived from Winnipeg in late afternoon so they're here for hubby to put back together tomorrow morning and be up and ready for chores...also picked up a few groceries and a magazine, of course!! At least magazines aren't fattening..just add to my house clutter.

Today is pancake Tuesday so we had waffles for lunch with ham and eggs and then for supper we had Belgium waffles with strawberries and whipped cream. Last day to eat ice cream before Lent tomorrow so I might just have a little bowl for a bedtime snack. I'll see if I have room in my calories for the day...For my green soup for the week I made a huge pot yesterday. It's doctored package of cream of asparagus instant soup.with some onions and celery cooked in a bit of olive oil and then extra water..6 or 8 cups and some frozen brussels sprouts, baby carrots and cauliflower and about one cup of milk..quite yummy but the brussels sprouts kind of over power the other flavors. It will be lunches for the rest of the week.

I'm happy with my March goals and I'm just a couple pounds away from my tracker weight. I'm doing good with my green goals, lots of green bubble baths and I'm not green yet :) Plus been eating lots of green foods..my snacking nuts for this month are pistachios :) Had lots of green tea and lots of exercise.. whether it's riding my bike or doing chores and checks..last night I took the 11pm check and then the 7 am one and hubby took a few in between. It warms up some today but tonight's quite cold again and then the big warm up is supposed to start tomorrow..I can't wait til spring!!!

I've done a bit of sorting and recycling and we got rid of the old sofa and quite a few garbage bags :) I bought some Simply green cleaners to get started on spring cleaning..the windows need a good washing inside and out (the wood stoves are hard on windows!!)

I bought a little jade plant..when I saw it in the store last week it reminded me that my mom had one..so when I see it I think of my mom :)

Well I should go track my food and exercise and make some green tea and see if ice cream fits for the day..thanks for stopping by for a chat and a cup of tea.the ice cream is optional ( by the way it's green..mint chocolate chip haha)

Take care and keep on Sparkin'

Love Donna emoticon

May all your Dreams come true emoticon

PS..the northern lights on my background page are some of my favorite things..and when I'm out at night checking for calves is the best time to see them I'm always in awe of them..Good night all you who can sleep through the night... it'll be several weeks before that happens here...

What a great idea to go green! You've come up with so many ways to make it so. I'm lucky in that our recycling company weighs our recyclables and gives us rewards points. We can redeem the points for small rewards--my favorite is Everybody's Nuts Salt & Pepper Pistachios!

Too bad you don't live closer. I would've gladly given you a start off my jade plant. I used to have one that got really huge--long gone now--so when I saw a really beautiful one in a friend's coffee shop I asked if I could take one leaf to start another. That thing is growing out of its pot now! I hope yours does just as well...or better!

Your blog tonight seemed more upbeat and made me smile. I will be over for the tea, but the ice cream I will forgo. I just ate an orange for my snack. I have a couple of other green things to send you via regular email, because I don't know how to get the stationery from my regular program over to Spark.
When I wake up at night to go to the bathroom, I will have to say a quick prayer for you and yours and the new little ones arriving.
God bless

Glad that your little heifer calf is OK! They are so cute when they are first born! Are her ears going to be OK, I hope? Your life on the farm sounds so interesting with everything that you have to do. I know, though, that it must be hard work, too! I, too, love the Northern Lights!! I grew up with them, living in Michigan, but down here in Texas, they are not visible emoticon We have a foal due around March the 20th, and I will not be sleeping through the night until it is born, and safely standing and nursing! Really enjoyed your blog, emoticonfor sharing!! emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon
