pjs, hot cocoa and the glow of Christmas tree lights :)

Sunday, December 12, 2010

Hi..what a weekend..yesterday I wrapped a bunch of gifts, checked the herd with hubby, watched the oil rig move out, made pistachio salad and a cookie tray for the pot luck party.

The party was lots of fun, the community center was almost full..it was a retirement party for the local tire man who had been in business for over 30 years in our community. After the pot luck supper there were speeches and a roast..the guys were hilarious and told a lot of jokes and stories..had us wiping away tears from laughing so much! We sat with some friends that are neighbors and we had a great visit :) Then a musical jam session was a big hit , that also included dancing for anyone who wanted. We were ready to leave by 10 pm since today was another busy day.

We drove up to our daughter's about 4 hours away to celebrate my littlest granddaughter's 6th birthday..we had bbq burgers and veggies and salads. my son and his girlfriend were also there, and great-grandparents and the other grandparents. Everyone had a great time but the weather was really cold and then quite stormy almost the whole way home!!!

Now it's still stormy outside and very cold with the wind chill so I'm cuddled in pjs on the couch, having hot cocoa watching the glow of the Christmas tree lights..hubby even made a fire in the family room wood stove so it's quite cozy here..hope you're all keeping warm, where ever you are :)

I think tomorrow I'll try to catch up on my food and exercise logs, wrap the last of the gifts, do a bit more cleaning and decorating. Tuesday we have hubby's pasture Christmas party at Weyburn so I can pick up any last minute things I need for my early Christmas on the 18th. I sure hope the weather is better than today..I worry about the kids travelling!!

Well I think I should call it a night..it's been a fun and hectic weekend. Once I finish my decorating I'll post some pictures, I've been enjoying others blogs with Christmas trees and decorating..like a virtual open house or virtual progressive party!!

Keep on Sparkin'...
..Love Donna

Sounds like you had a grand time. I work away from home a month at a time and will be going home Dec 23 this year. It's going to be great.

I'd like to live vicariously through your Christmas festive-ness. This year it just isn't the same in my house due to lots of circumstances, and I admit that it is nearly sad that the decorating, baking, and shopping is lacking in presence. I'm jealous. Happy Holidays :) Enjoy it.

Hi..I'm having a beer tonight instead of tea..

Friday, December 10, 2010

..to celebrate almost being finished Christmas baking..just the tarts left..if I make them!! I did some cleaning and decorating and after this blog and beer I'm going to drag out my Christmas tree :)

We were going to go to Plentywood today but it's quite stormy and cold..hope it warms up by Sunday so we can go to granddaughter's birthday party...

I made 6 more Christmas treats today, nibbled a couple shortbread cookies..they are my late Mom's recipe of brown sugar shortbread..made into a square log and chilled and sliced and baked..it wouldn't be Christmas without those cookies..takes me back to my Childhood :) I have her nativity scene too and I just put it up today..and have been thinking of her.

Since I've painted, some of my Christmas decorations don't match the decor so I'm having fun switching around stuff to different rooms, and pulling out some new ways to put stuff together.

I'm going to add a couple recipes here for Jill and anyone else who would like them ...

Chipits Noel Crisps..I found this recipe in a magazine about 30 years ago.
cream 1/2 cup marg or butter 3/4 cup sugar
add 1 egg 1/2 tsp almond extract
then add 1 cup flour 1/2 tsp baking powder 1 cup chocolate chips
3/4 cup coconut 3/4 cup maraschino cherries
Bake at 350 F 12 to 15 mins

Christmas Cornflake Toffees
3 bars of toffee..can use caramels or homemade
Microwave just to melting
add 1 tbsp butter and 2 tbsp cream or milk
stir until smooth add 2 cups cornflakes and 1 cup mixed nuts
drop quickly onto wax paper..they harden fast..don't double
( since we can't buy Mac toffee anymore in bars I substituted about 30 unwrapped caramels)

Well, I should go get the tree out of the closet..haha :)
Hope all is great with you and have a great weekend!! We have a party tomorrow night and then birthday party on Sunday..Keep on Sparkin'....
..Love Donna!!

Christmas Baking Marathon..

Thursday, December 09, 2010

Hi..I don't think I burned many calories on my Christmas baking marathon but at least I didn't burn any cookies!! haha!! The new stove works great and I got so much done! I made 14 different things..3 kinds of shortbread, poppy cock, fruit roll, toffee corn flakes, chocolate fudge with crushed candy canes on top, truffles, chipit noel crisps, cherry pecan cookies, peanut butter blossoms, that slice that has melted butterscotch chips, peanut butter and colored mini marshmallows..I call Auntie Bea's slice..after my Auntie, also the dough for sugar cookies and gingerbread men is chilling in the fridge for tomorrow. I have a few more things to bake..about 6 more and I'll be done :)

Instead of tea I'm having some water since I'm really thirsty..we went out for supper tonight and I had some french fries that were salty. We went in to town this afternoon to pick up some mini blinds for the living room and bathroom..they look really nice!! I asked hubby to go out for supper since I was pretty sick of the kitchen and cleaning up..a marathon baking is followed by a marathon clean up :)

If any one wants the recipes for any of my Christmas favorites just let me know and I'll post them on my blog..What are some of your favorite Christmas goodies? I'm always looking for new, yummy things. I have a couple new recipes to try gingerbread spritz and mint chocolate chip cookies :)

The treats yet to make are swedish tea ring for Christmas morning, maple pecan fudge, tarts..butter and pecan, and swedish raspberry delights!

I have special containers for each kind of treat and I'll also give a lot of them away..2 close friends are getting gift boxes filled with baking ..they are both working off the farm and one has a special needs son (her daughter also found out she's having triplets!! in March and she has 2 kids already!) I also want to make up a baking gift box for a slo-pitch team friend whose mother and sister have both just been diagnosed with cancer. I'll also give lots to my kids!!! And we'll have treats to last until spring :) especially since I won't be eating many myself...

I'm too pooped to drag out my Christmas tree tonight..the couch and lap top were calling out to me , so here I sit..tomorrow is another day :)

I should go enter my food on my tracker and then head to bed..Keep on Sparkin' and hope your Christmas preparations are coming along like mine :)

Happy Holidays..
..Love Donna

14 different kinds of holiday cookies and treats?? 14?? What is that, about a thousand treats? Wow! Superwoman is in the kitchen. I cannot even imagine being able to make that much in one day. You are truly amazing. I bet your house smells so good!
I'm kinda afraid to bake because I might just eat them all.
Sounds like so much fun though, I guess I could always give them as gifts as you do.
Thanks for your motivating baking story.

I'm glad to know that I'm not the only one who has bake-a-thons! You did get a lot down. I haven't started. This year making snickerdooles(I add walnuts), blossom cookies, sugar, Buckeyes, fudge, My Take on Take Fives, Peppermint Bark and a few other kinds of cookies plus bread. i also give goodie to all my neighbors and send it to work with Hubby.
Sit back and relax tonight you earned it!

Wow! You did have a cookie baking marathon today!!! Your house must have smell devine!!! No wonder you were too pooped to pull out the Christmas tree. As you said, there is always tomorrow. I will be doing a LITTLE bit of baking today. I need cookies for a gathering tomorrow evening. I would be in trouble with my hubby if I baked as much as you . . . he was already complaining the other day that his pants were getting a bit tight! He loves sweets!! Have a fabulous Friday!

Wow! Yes, please, can we have the recipes for Toffee corn flakes and chipit noel crisps? I haven't heard of them and they sound good. I love to bake, and I might spend a day doing it with clients at work. Two things I make every year are Solstice Cake -- like a pound cake with dried fruits that have been soaked in brandy, and homemade caramels. This year I plan to experiment with making the caramels with maple syrup or maple sugar.

I'm gonna be one of the crowd who shows up at your house at Christmas! emoticon

Chocolatey Mint Tea..yum yum!!

Wednesday, December 08, 2010

Hi..home from Weyburn where I pretty much finished up Christmas shopping and bought most of the remaining groceries for our Christmas feast on the 18th!! I also found yummy new tea..Chocolatey Mint!!! I'm relaxing with a pot right now, I also made extra for hubby :)

Before we left I shampooed the living room furniture so it was all clean and dry when I got home :) Hubby had an appointment so we left around 8:30 a.m. Then we had lunch with the in-laws. Saw lots of friends so spent lots of time visiting :)

When we got home hubby checked the herd and moved them home..they're pretty well done fall grazing on the fields so now they'll be on the swath grazing for a month or more. While over there he stopped to visit at the oil rig and they are finished drilling and will set the rig down tonight and move out Saturday, next comes the service rig to see if it's a producer...

While he was gone I made supper..frozen meatballs in sweet and sour sauce and brown rice..I had a bit but mostly a spinach salad since we had lunch at KFC!! Then I put away the shopping and sorted gifts into gift bags and put the "stocking stuffers" into $ store cloth bags since no one will be here Christmas morning!! I found some really cute decorations..just what I don't need is more Christmas decorations...but I bought 2 anyway..a little stuffed cowboy santa in a cowboy boot stocking that was $4.50 then 20% off, also a cute tin wreath with a snowman on it for the front door...which was quite cheap too and 20% off, too.

I did a bit of decorating, tomorrow we'll run to town and pick up some mini blinds I ordered for the living room..then I can put up my tree..I put it in front of the window. Actually I cheat and when I put it away I wrapped it in a sheet and shoved it in the spare room's closet!!! So I just have to drag it out and fluff it up a bit.

After supper I was relaxing with a couple of new magazines I got..one of my many guilty pleasures..at least it's a non calorie one :) except for all the yummy Christmas baking ideas. I hope to start my Christmas baking tomorrow..should be able to get most of it done in a couple of days :) Then I'll have a variety of cookies to take to my daughter's on the weekend. It'll be fun using my new stove :)

Thanks to everyone who's been stopping by for tea and a chat..also for the compliments on my living room painting..I'll post some more pictures when I get it decorated :) I hope your December is going as planned..my goals are coming along nicely..weight is holding steady, my goal is to be down 2 pounds by the end of December so it's just mostly to maintain!! I have hardly had any time to ride my bike tho...that might be more of a January thing!!

It just occurred to me if we have all these people come at once for the 18th I will have to use the inflatable camping mattress for some of them!! We have a tiny house, not too bad for the 2 of us, and even for when we had 3 kids at home..but now they're all bringing significant other's and oldest daughter has 2 kids!! That's 8 extra people to find room for!! Quite a few years ago my oldest sister and her husband and 6 of her 7 kids and one fiancé came and stayed the week between Christmas and New Year's. The funnest part was one bathroom!! Hubby's best idea was to close the door and start a line!! haha!!

Well, I really should finish up my tea and this blog and head to bed...have a great day tomorrow..and keep on Sparkin'

Love Donna!!

Wow you get so much done in one day! I feel good if I get one errand done. I need to kick up the energy a notch. Sounds like your keeping busy. I love having a bunch of family over for Christmas I think it's all about family anyway, so your very lucky, even though you may have to stack em next to each other. Ha Ha.
Hmmmm...the tea sounds so good.

December 7...Great progress on house work...

Tuesday, December 07, 2010

Hi..I posted some pictures of my living room paint. I also shampooed the area rugs..so they look like new :) I'm going to shampoo the couch and love seat tomorrow morning before we leave for Weyburn..then they will be dry when we get home.

Hubby finally got the tractor towed to town to be fixed. He got the tow bar yesterday and it was too icy in the yard so we had to pull the truck with another tractor..I bet that looked funny ..a tractor pulling a truck pulling a tractor! Then \i went ahead out of the yard and up the big hill with the tractor first in case the truck couldn't make it up the hill..which it didn't so I had to back the tractor down the hill to pull again..

I set up all the books in the family room..man I didn't know I had so many books..I hate to get rid of any unless I don't plan to refer to them or read them again. (did I mention I'm quite a hoarder?)

I put up the ribbons on the doors for Christmas cards, so far I've just slipped them through the ribbons..looks nice. I picked burgundy ribbon since most of my living room Christmas decorations are burgundy.

We tried the deer steaks tonight..not too bad, I did them with sautéed onions and put BBQ sauce on them.

We might have only Christmas on the 18th instead of both days if my oldest daughter can bring her youngest daughter down!! It's also my little granddaughter's 6 birthday on December 12 so we are going up for her party!!!

Well I finished my pot of peppermint tea, so I should finish this up and head to bed. We have to leave quite early tomorrow..

Thursday I want to finish up the house stuff and start baking..

Have a great evening and keep on Sparkin'..

Love Donna
