Just a quick blog..

Monday, March 25, 2013's been a long and cold nice thing is the sun finally was shining!! We finished morning chores at 7pm, came in and had a quick supper and then went out to start night chores!!

I feel like I'm coming down with a cold..runny nose, fever and chills....yuck!!

We only had 2 calves so far today so we caught up turning pairs down to the bottom corrals..then feeding took a long time as everyone needed bales and the sheds needed new straw...

Meals were simple..breakfast ..a banana, puffed wheat and milk/ lunch..eggs on toast with cheddar cheese and an apple/ supper was chicken pieces in the crock pot with BBQ sauce, microwaved sweet potato, corn and a tiny piece of limey cheese cake...

Had a phone visit with one of my best friends today...she hasn't left her farm for weeks and weeks....getting a bit of cabin fever..they are busy calving too.. go for now..thanks for dropping by and keep on Sparkin'

Love Donna emoticon

We are all wanderers on this earth. Our hearts are full of wonder and our souls are deep with DREAMS... emoticon

I've been working on my April goals and plans...
I took some snow pictures to share tomorrow...

We heard on CTV news last night that the VIA train from Vancouver to Toronto was stuck in snow in Saskatchewan for 24 hours... and I thought of you.

Take care; hope your cold doesn't develop any further.

New week of the challenge...

Saturday, March 23, 2013

Hi..this week we have a new challenge..track food and stay in range...this one should help me get back on track...hope I can do it at least some days as it's still hectic here...

This week we are travelling to Paris in the 5% I made a big pot of french onion soup to eat this week...breakfast was a banana and a bowl of puffed wheat and 1% milk/lunch was the soup and a salad with some leftover roast beef/ supper was steak, salad and veggies and a little piece of key lime (jello) slice....also had a lime a rita as a relaxing drink during hockey..Edmonton is playing tonight...Go Oilers!!

We had 6 calves today so far..still so snowy and crazy here...we spent most of the day moving critters around, putting the new pairs into the barn and doing chores...we restrawed the bottom shed and I helped take off twines...this afternoon I was walking the feed ring to look for new calves and a first calf heifer had just calved and I continued down the hill and a cow had calved and she was laying on her calf!! It was completely unresponsive so I started chest it's heart beating again and then it was blinking and breathing..yikes..we almost lost another one!! so glad to have been able to revive it..then we put it in the porch to warm up and it's fine now!! I did the night barn chores as hubby was still feeding a few bales..he is asleep on the couch now and it's time for me to take the 9:30pm check..I'll make this quick...

Thanks for dropping by and keep on Sparkin'

A calmer day.....

Friday, March 22, 2013 was less hectic...only one calf so far :) which gave us a chance to catch up with tagging calves and giving them vitamin shots...the wind quit blowing, and it warmed up a bit..still not above freezing and it snowed all day...

We made a sad discovery today..they little calf that was the frozen icicle yesterday had a bum hole :( yikes....

I had lots of dishes to catch up with today too..and I did them while hubby dug out bales with his tractor..Then I did night chores alone..while hubby fed bales. Luckily I had only 5 cow/calf pairs in the barn to feed and water..and the little calf I'm still bottle feeding...

The snow is getting deeper and deeper and I can't walk across the yard without falling..a combination of tiredness, snow and uncoorindination..haha...

Today's meals were cream of wheat porridge for breakfast/ the last of beef and barley soup and a salmon fillet (hubby had fish n chips/ supper was homemade cheeseburger pizza with extra onions and mushrooms, and floats..mine was grape..hubby had orange..

We watched the end of the Calgary hockey game..but we missed most of it as we didn;t get in for supper until 7 pm...

Now I'm relaxing on the couch with my computer..hubby just came in from a cow check and said a first time heifer is calving..we'll give her some more time before we help her...

He loves to channel surf so I don't think I'll see too much of the next hockey game unless he falls asleep on the couch..haha

Today while I was reading e-mails I found one that was about burn really caught my many helpful ideas..want to revisit it and take some notes... more on that later....

On the 5% challenge today is the last day for the breakfast/recipe challenge.. today's recipe I found was for low sodium homemade breakfast sausage..just what I was looking for as when we bought the 1/2 pork from the farmer I asked for the ground pork and since he doesn't make sausages I will make my own sausage was looking for some ideas..Tomorrow is weigh in day and next week's challenge is to track food and saty in calorie ranges..I need to do that!! I'm afraid my weigh in won't be great :( Way too busy to keep better track of the calories and way too hungry from non stop chores to lose weight :( Will have to concentrate on better choices when things slow down more and make the best of the last half of the challenge!!

I want to thank all you sparkers for dropping by and commenting and encouraging me on my blog and page!! Your support has been overwhelming!! Thanks again for dropping by and keep on Sparkin'

Love Donna emoticon

Yikes..will this winter weather never quit...

Friday, March 22, 2013

Hi..we survived the blizzard but not one of our got trampled in the bottom cattle shed :( All these losses make for big financial losses too :(

We had 10 calves in 24 hours..we are now over 90...we had 140 to calve so we have around 40 left to calve..if we keep getting 10 a day we'll be done in 4 days but it doesn't happen like that..we'll have 10 to 20 stragglers...

One of the calves born early this morning was a frozen icicle so we had her in the porch to thaw out..she's fine now..but not after several hours of reviving her with towels, hair dryer and a warm bottle of milk..then it was time to start the hours and hours of chores...add to that slogging through the blizzard and shovelling the deck several times...and we build an area for just the calves to go in the big shed to help have no more trampled we hope...that involved carrying 16'- 2" x 8" down the hill about 1/4 of a mile...then we fed bales and I took off twines and we re-strawed the more forking the big round bales around. Then it was time to water up in the barn..where the newest calves are and the twins we are grafting onto mommas that lost their babies...we have 11 cows in the barn tonight so that is lots and lots of water to carry in 5 gal pails to them, then they get oats and hay forked to them and straw added to their stalls to keep them dry...oh yeah and I have a little twin I am bottle feeding 2x a day, too...

Well..I know why I'm tired....

I put on a casserole of rice, pork chops, onions, mushroom soup and water before we started on he night barn chores so supper was already when we came in a 7 pm...I just needed to set the table and microwave a veggie...and we had the apple sauce with the pork chops and another bowl of the apple sauce with a dab of ice cream and some cinnamon for dessert/ lunch was my beef barley soup and a meat loaf sandwich/ breakfast was a banana and some oatmeal and dates..yum!! The recipe I looked up today was for green smoothies..I want to make one..maybe tomorrow for breakfast...I have some frozen packs of spinach and I'll add some fruit...have any of you tried spinach smoothies??

Needless to say not too much got done in the house today...I did put in a load of laundry tonight..the towels and mats from the calf in the porch..and I scrubbed the porch floor too...

Now I'm just relaxing from helping put a cow that is calving into the barn..hubby is sleeping on the couch and I have my feet up ..I'll give the cow and hour or an hour and a half and then check if she's had her baby...

I found this cute thing on facebook today and you know how I love lists....

To Do List for the First Day of Spring..

1. Shovel walk
2. Scrape windshield
3. Break icicles off gutters
4. Shovel snow off roof
5. Salt sidewalks
6. Defrost water pipes
7. Reschedule cancelled airline reservation
8. Chip ice off car door
9. Tow frozen car to garage to defrost radiator
10. Put groundhog in oven w/BBQ sauce

Well..we have another whole week of below normal weather so there will be no melting anytime soon....tonight the wind is howling and it's snowing..lots of the highways in Saskatchewan are closed :(

Best sign off..thanks for dropping by and keep on sparkin'

I bet you sleep well at night, unless you have an emergency at one of your sheds.
You have my admiration.
Take care of yourself. emoticon

First day of Spring..and what else..a blizzard....

Thursday, March 21, 2013

Hi..not another blizzard!! and it's really cold with the wind chill..another long night of checking for calves and hoping not too many are born tonight as they will freeze their ears..already had one born tonight that lost it's ears :( and hubby was just out...

We did our usual amount of chores plus hubby put the snow blower on the tractor and blew out the road...since we thought that we had to get to the neighbors tomorrow to check his cows while he had a drs appt tomorrow but now the weather is nasty the neighbor is staying home. While the road was open I made a quick trip to town for mail and groceries..I haven't bought any groceries since February..hubby bought milk and ice cream last once a month shopping was working good but I thought I was going through Regina mid march so I held off on shopping...well should be good for now and into April :) Hope it's spring by them...

Thanks to Wallahalla who shared this spring quote with me...

"The first day of spring is one thing, and the first spring day is another. The difference between them is sometimes as great as a month."
~Henry Van Dyke

It's hard to think it's spring when we have snow everywhere and all these storms and bad weather forecast..until way into April...

I am missing the Ladies Night neighbor and I always look forward to it. She doesn't get out too much as she is 88 and a widow and lives with her son... we usually go to this in march and also go to the local green house grand opening in May sometime..she still loves to garden...
I have another neighbor who used to travel with us..she's way over 90 now and doesn't go out much..but when she did come along she described March's Ladies Night Out as just like cows who have been stuck in the corral all winter and get to go out into the pasture and run around..haha..moooo...she has such a crazy sense of humor :)

I got 3 new magazines so after I finish on the computer..and watching the hockey I can read some new magazines!! And dream of spring....sigh...

We have over 90 calves now so things are moving along fast...looking forward to it slowing down!! Hubby and I are getting really pooped! We looked up last year and we had only 20 some calves by this time last year!! No wonder it seems so is soo wild!!

My meals for today were a quick breakfast of cold cereal and milk/ lunch was beef barley soup again and a roast beef pita with spinach/ supper was meatloaf, potatoes and cauliflower with grasshopper pie for dessert...

I got the flax blueberry muffins made..toady's recipe I looked up was for more flavors of oatmeal..I thawed out some homemade applesauce for tomorrow night's pork chops and I may make oatmeal with applesauce for tomorrows breakfast....

I caught up on a bunch of laundry this morning and talked to my neighbor on the phone and my mother in law a couple times on the phone too..'s going to be a looong night with lots of cattle checks....

Thanks for dropping by and keep on Sparkin'

Love Donna emoticon

It's snowing here in Cincinnati, Ohio, today too, though nothing like you're experiencing. I'm originally from Wisconsin and remember so well those bitterly cold "spring" days. Let's hope it warms up soon--especially for those little calves! Poor baby that lost its ears!

By the way, did I read earlier that you're an Oilers fan? I was a crazy hockey loving girl as a kid and the Islanders, North Stars and Oilers were my favorite teams. Especially the Oilers, because I just couldn't get enough Gretzky in my life. I finally got his autograph during a pregame warmup skate in Minnesota and he asked me to hold his gloves while he signed a dollar bill for me; there was nobody else at the boards but us. I was 15 at the time and when he skated away, my knees turned to Jello and I fell into the seat. What a memory! :)

Hope you have a great day. Enjoy those muffins--they're yummy!
