The last day of winter....

Tuesday, March 19, 2013

Hi..can it really be spring tomorrow? We still have lots of snow and cold forecast....I cancelled taking my neighbor to Ladies night out tomorrow night as our road is still blocked and it is forecast to snow and blow...hate to be out in nasty weather especially with my 88 year old neighbor..she wasn't too dissapointed when I phoned and told her..she said she was going to tell me she couldn't go either...

We spent the day with chores and more of the twins wasn't getting enough milk so I gave her a couple bottles today. We tagged and sorted out and moved more pairs out to the bottom corrals as it's getting really crowded in the back behind the barn...

Hubby got hit by a cow and hurt his ribs and has been having a hard time we are both coming down with colds...

Today's meals were my favorite oatmeal with dates/lunch was some homemade beef and barley soup and a roast beef pita with spinach and horseradish/ supper was some side pork and made hubby fried potatoes and veggies for us..and key lime parfaits for dessert. Tonight we celebrated the last day of winter with some winter lager beer..very strong stuff..feeling very sleepy...just being on the computer and watching a hockey game...

I looked up some recipes for different oatmeal...looks yummy..will have to try some new ones....what's your favorite way to cook oatmeal? I like it with pecans and cinnamon too....

Best sign off..thanks for dropping by and for all your kind comments..keep on Sparkin'

Hope Spring comes soon and warms up your days.

Hi..last night's blog was a rhetorical

Tuesday, March 19, 2013

Hi..can't believe how many sparkers answered my question..haha..I'm more the tomboy type..haha..

Last night was so stormy and cold cold cold...not great weather for calving...we brought 2 of the new little calves that were born last night into the made it didn't....damn weather!! When will this end..looks like at least one more week of below normal temps and above normal snow fall..Saskatchewan has already had a record snow fall year..

We were up late into the night working with calves and checking for more babies. It was after 3 am when we finally went to has been pretty slow going with less than 4 hours of sleep...I helped with the checks and chores and took twines off bales..had to clean out a water bowl that was full of manure. Helped hubby set up a corral wall out of panels to keep pairs separate...all this while slogging through knee deep snow with a nasty wind ankles are sore and swollen and my knees are sore too....very long day..

I did do some catching up in the house...had stacks of dishes, did some laundry, cleaned the porch..Two calves and barn boots make quite a mess!!

Today's meals were simple..breakfast was cold cereal and milk/ lunch was more of my pea soup for me and a roast beef, spinach and horseradish sandwich (I have an electric meat slicer that I love for deli slicing leftover roast beef very thinly..make great sandwiches)/ Supper was a burger, and lots of veggies and apple crisp for dessert...

I wanted to make the blueberry muffins today but ran out of time and gas... today's recipe I looked up was for yogurt and fruit parfaits..sounds really yummy!!

Had a phone visit with my daughter tonight and watched a bit of hockey and had a light lime beer..yum I'm really sleepy and hubby is already asleep on the couch...will just finish up this blog and head outside for one last cow check then off to bed..hubby will probably get up a couple times in the night...

Tomorrow is another day...busy busy busy...

Thanks for dropping by and keep on Sparkin'

Do you think I'm sexy??

Sunday, March 17, 2013

Hi..did my title get your attention? Well this is today's story..hubby and I are out doing chores and checking through the cow/calf pairs during today's intense snow fall!! Hubby says "You look sexy with the snow on your eyelashes" I say "Thank you" he says "I was talking to the cow" :)

Well..that's what it's like around here down on the farm lol

Like I said we are having another day of snow..we have about another 10" and now the wind is up so it's another blizzard....

We did lots and lots of chores..took twine off bales, shovelled snow out of the calf pen again, helped hubby hang up a huge tarp to make the shed drier...forked straw into sheds, did barn chores..had more calves..we had 4 in one hour this's almost time for me to head out for another check..they will have to be checked lots tonight...every couple of hours...this looong winter is getting us all down...spring..please come soon!!

Today is St Patrick's Day..hope you had some Irish fun today...I started today by asking hubby if he wanted me to make green cream of wheat cereal for breakfast? He didn't want it green so that's what we had for breakfast..not green tho...lunch was our usual Sunday lunch..eggs on toast (not green eggs and ham lol) dessert was knock off lower calorie shamrock shakes and green shamrock cookies...supper was oven boiled beef, cabbage, carrots, onions and carrots with some mint chocolate chip ice cream :)

For today's new breakfast recipe I found a good one for flax blueberry muffins which I hope to make tomorrow if I have any free time....and I'll substitute saskatoon berries..since I have some of those in the deepfreeze.

I got lots and lots of exercise in today with all the ankles really ache tonight so I have my feet up on the couch just watching tv..Edmonton already won the hockey game, hubby is having a nap and I'm ready to grab some green beer after I blog and then check the herd...

Thanks for dropping by and for all your comments and encouragement! Keep on Sparkin'

Have heart -- winter can only last so much longer. The official day of Spring, March 21st, doesn't matter much, but I KNOW that Winter is done at the beginning of April. It IS. We just have to hang in there ...

This weeks challenge is eating breakfast and finding new breakfast recipes..

Saturday, March 16, 2013

Hi..We didn't get too much snow so far..the most is supposed to fall tomorrow, but it is bitterly cold so chores were nasty :( We are forecast to receive around 10" of snow...with wind and cold...this weather is so depressing....

We only had a couple calves so that made things easier...we cleaned some of the barn today..yes that means a pitch fork and manure...we also fed the yearlings oats so we each carried 4 pails...we only had 3 pairs to water in the barn so that cut down on carrying water at least..we couldn't get the big tractor with the bale shredder started today..too cold so we had to use the other tractor and just set out the bales and take off twines...then lots of checking, some moving critters around and some eartagging and it felt like we did chores all day long again..

The challenge for this week is breakfast and finding new recipes..I read Paulaautumn's blog of her recipe she found for baked eggs and that sounded so good I had a microwaved egg in a cup with a sprinkle of shredded cheese; Lunch was the peas soup..made from dried peas..etc and crackers; for supper we had steaks, potatoes and cauliflower with pumpkin sheet cake.

The weigh in was today and I have gained a pound this week :( Not surprising as all this work has increased my appetite :(

I caught up on some of my journals today...and now I am relaxing on the couch and watching hockey..may have a light lime beer..Happy St. Patrick's Day...I haven't decided if dessert tomorrow should be key lime pie or grasshopper pie (no grasshoppers will be harmed) lol..maybe both as hubby loves his treats...

I better go for now..thanks for dropping by and taking the time to comment..Keep on Sparkin'

Love Donna emoticon

This is my year of DREAMS coming true... emoticon

emoticon Green beer is for people who don;t understand that beer was fun already...

emoticon Happy St. Patrick's Day!! emoticon

Remembered to wear my pedometer today...

Friday, March 15, 2013

Hi..I remembered to wear my pedometer today and so far I've logged 8.5 miles..the only pedometer I could find is stuck on miles instead of steps and I can't figure out how to change it...this also didn't count hubby getting me out of bed at 4:30 am to help with a cow was hard to get the cow in and then we needed to help her with the calf puller and straps..only the second time this year we've had to use the calf puller...all was fine and we were able to get a bit more sleep before the day began...and the snow and wind were viscous!!!

We did the usual chores and checking and feeding and I visited on the phone to my neighbor..we were planning to attend the annual ladies night out in our small's next week so it will be something fun to look forward too..will be nice to get away for awhile...

I did a bit of house stuff...caught up with dishes and made a big pan of granola bars..cut up made 20 little will make great snacks for me in the days ahead... meals were breakfast..cereal and milk; lunch spinach and roast beef salad with horseradish dressing; supper was homemade thin crust ham and pineapple pizza and orange floats...yum yum :) for a snack I sampled one of my granola bars....

The snow has stopped for now but it's turned really really cold!! More snow is expected for Sat and Sun...will this winter never end?? It makes the calving 2 to 3 times more work..and us old guys are getting tired!!

Well got lots and lots of exercise and did my stretches..still haven't caught up on my daily meditation challenge but really enjoyed meditating yesterday...maybe I'll have a wee bit of spare time tomorrow...

Time to think of some St. Patrick's day treats..or like I saw on the tv tonight...St Patrick Day weekend (well may as well make a weekend of it..haha) Crack out the green beers and some Irish stew or something...found some knock off recipes for shamrock shakes..lower cal...and love key lime pie and or grasshopper pie :) Think I'll be making peas soup for tomorrow and have lots of green veggies on hand like peas, cabbage, beans , spinach, cucumbers and green peppers..yum yum!! feeling kind of sleep deprived as I went to bed after midnight and was up at 4:30...think I'll just relax with my feet hockey and maybe sip a light beer, read some's been a long day, again...

Thanks for dropping by and for all your kind comments and encouragement! Keep on stretching..keep on Sparkin'

Love Donna emoticon emoticon

Beware the Ides of March (cuz a snow storm may get ya..)
