Week 2...Blog 3...

Hi...today's challenge blog is about..what am I doing to encourage myself and keep on track...

I think the main thing I do to encourage myself is find encouraging things to read...I collect quotes and make little books of them and put them in blogs and put them in art journals, etc etc etc...

2 encouraging quotes I found for today are..

"Ask yourself if what you are doing today is getting you closer to where you want to be tomorrow"

"Miralces start to happen when you give as much energy to your dreams as you do to your fears"

..both spoke to me :)

Speaking of reading I read a few things on nutrition..one Spark article called Over 100 Super Foods for a Super You..had a large list of good for you foods for inspiration..what I did was go through the list and counted how many foods I have in my house right now or have eaten over the last month..I counted 73... yeah me!!

I checked out the message boards and read lots and lots of Ways to cut 100 calories..great stuff!!

I track my nutrition..on paper and then on the tracker if I have time..always trying to stay within my calorie range and then do the analysis to see if I'm meeting my nutritional goals...and what I need to adjust...

Today I had a healthy breakfast of an egg and a slice of my homemade breadmachine crusty bran bread...lunch was a cheddar cheese sandwich on same bread (we were a little short on time as the storm rages on and the cattle need more attention than me) supper was a couple oz of left over roast beef, a huge salad with yellow peppers, tomatoes and mushrooms..some vinegar for dressing..dessert was a bowl of strawberries and ..my treat for the day..a small scoop of vanilla ice cream...when I put the food in my tracker I will see if I have reamining calories or just have a pot of green tea for the evening snack.

Tomorrow it I have time I hope to make the big pot of soup for the weeks lunches. I checked on the 5% challenge thread of recipes and plan to adapt the Sayur Iodeh (veggie stew) I'll substitute some of the ingredients and add more water so it's more of a soup than stew...I'll keep you updated on how it turns out...I'll have to leave out the turnip and coconut milk and some of the spices as I don't have them on hand...

As for my fitness minutes for today..I did several hours of cattle chores through the raging blizzard today..

It got really nasty here overnight and all the snow we had moved has all come back double or more!! We had 8 calves yesterday....including 2 sets of twins..the little black cuties are just fine but unfortunatly the tan pair died in the blizzard :( Another cow was calving close to midnight and we put her in the barn and wanted to give her some time so we went to the house and played 2 games of cribbage..my hubby's favorite game...I don't like math so I play it for him....the cow calved fine by herself and we could fianlly get to bed....hubby got up several times through the night to check the herd....

The blizzard has continued all day and we were having a hard time getting around in the snow!! The herd was completely covered over by snow and after being out in it so were we..my eyelashes even iced shut :(

Hubby got the tractor stuck several times and even drove off the road once :( We put new straw in sheds and barns and I took twine off bales and moved cattle around...another day I'm really beat..and this is just the first couple weeks of calving!! It will go on until the end of April.....hope the weather gets better soon, though the storm may last for a couple more days.....I can't wait until spring!!

Well..I still need to put my food into my tracker, and make some tea and watch hockey..now it's 8:30 and I'm ready for bed...hope it won't be another after midnight night....

I love the quotes! making little books sounds cool. how do you do that? I am not crafty, but my Mom is and I am always looking for interesting things for her to do.

    Just reading your blog makes me tired! You and your husband have such different schedules from those of us who work a "regular" job... or are retired... do farmers ever retire???

Your inspirational messages and artaicles that you cut out are a great way to keep on track. We each need to find our own way to work through our bad habits to create a stronger, healthier lifestyle for ourselves, and SP has all kinds of practical articles, quizzes and blogs to inspire us.

    OMG, Donnna, I am exhausted reading your blog. Where in the worls fo you find the time to get all that done. Yet, you are so inspiring. Sorry you lost the two calves. It must be an incredible to see the birthings and for sure we as humans don't alway have control of the outcomes.

I like your quotes and the food list is a great thought.

Hope the blizzard moves through quickly and yes, hoping spring comes fast.

We are very hot here and a blizzard is never likely in our part of WA. But my thoughts are with you and family including the animals for safety and joy.

Getting ready for the blizzard....

Hi..we've been really busy getting ready for the blizzard that is forecast for us.. it's been snowing off and on all day today...we've been putting out feed and straw and I have moved more snow and straw today..my body feels very tired tonight.. Then we have had a busy calving day..we have had 5 calves including a set of little black cutie twins!!

The storm is supposed to last until Tuesday...good thing we planned to stay home for most of March as we won't be going anywhere soon...

Watched a few hockey games while enjoying a pot of green tea...soo ready for bed and it's not even 10 pm!!

    We're waiting for a big storm to arrive here too. Just had one last week but only 16 days until it's officially spring so have to stay positive.

I know this is even more challenging for you because you have to care for all of the animals and it's right in the midst of calving. Stay safe and warm. Hope the weather moves out soon.

Hi..I have started to type this log 3 times now..getting a bit discouraged!!

So today's blog is how I plan to improve my nutrition...so far I have been drinking green tea daily, remembering to take my vitamins and supplements, drinking lots of water, having lots of veggies and some fruits, proteins, dairy and whole grains..and treats in moderation. I had completely cut out sugar and carbs for 4 weeks in Jan and Feb so now am gradually adding them back to my diet.

Today I read a good quote on spark...If you halve it you can have it...it spoke to me about moderation and remembering portion sizes!!

Some of the reading and research I have done includes reading the article called How to Spring Clean your Diet..to summarize it's about eating more fresh spring produce...and eating less heavy winter-type meals. They listed 11 foods to include...some are my favorites already..asparagus/greens/oranges/spinach and strawberries. Some I don't like..apricots and mangoes, 2 I have never tried.. artichokes and fennel. Also listed was broccoli which I can't eat (I throw up if I ever eat it) and chives..which I grow in my garden but are right now under about 6 feet of snow!!

A spark article that some of you may have read was called Eat Naked..it has nothing to do with clothes and everything to do with eating plain foods without sauces etc...Clean eating. That is the majority of the meals and snack here. Since I started my Once a Month Shopping (OAMS) I have been buying less packaged foods, or canned foods...so have been working at clean eating.

The OAMS has also got me planning meals for the month which help control what we eat..we do eat out once in a while..2-4 times a month..maybe not so much in March with calving happening...I have roughly planned ideas for lunches and the suppers are mostly preplanned..Sun=chicken/Mon=pasta/Tue= ethnic/Wed=beef/Thurs=pork chops/Fri=fish/Sat=steak..we live on a ranch so we have our own butchered beef. I use lots of fresh and frozen veggies and fruits and hubby is a real potato lover but I can take or leave them...

Some of the other plans I have is to research more articles on spark on nutrition and check out the message boards too.

Another way I like to cut down on calories is to make a huge pot of soup and then use that for my lunches for the week...last week I made borscht..since we went to Russia, this week we are going to Polynesian so will make some kind of veggies soup..time to research some recipes..did you know there is a recipe link on the 5% challenge page?

So there are some of my ideas to improve my nutrition..I'd love to hear any suggestions you have on how you have made changes to eat healthier :)

I usually do an update of my day..but this blog has gotten longer than I thought it would..will add a quick update later...

    I'm so sure that all the planning is exactly what is needed to keep us on track. I love some of the ideas & I need to apply them myself. I always have good intentions, then get side tracked for one reason or another. However, I do think that eating at home instead of always eating out is much healthier. Just about everytime we go out to eat, I end up eating junk or at least badly cooked stuff.
So glad those little calves are doing well. emoticon

    You're coming up with a good plan and good ideas. I really need to develop this habit too so it's helpful to read your suggestions. I know we always want to see progress and success right away but taking these steps and staying with it should help you a lot.

    You are obviously planning your meals which is a good thing. You are not tempted mid-week to cook something else, nor, from what I have read about your schedule, do you have the time. I think you have a solid plan, and it will take time to implement them all. Good Luck. Keep Sparking.

Week 2...Blog 1

HI...The challenge for this week in the 5% winter challenge is to blog daily and then comment on 5 blogs...I've already commented on the blogs so time to write my blog...

I really love blogging (mostly for the comments and contact with you all!) but sometimes I just don't get around to doing it!! So I am commiting to blogging daily for this week!!

Today's blog is supposed to be about a healthy habit...I think blogging is a healthy habit since it really motivates me and encourages me with your comments...

But my healthy habit I'm going to blog about is since March is Nutrition month improving my quality of diet...I have started a folder with some healthy eating changes I want to make over the next month..some are just get back to basics...lots of water, lots of fruits and veggies, protein and whole grains and cutting back on sugar and treats....I've also committed to drinking green tea daily...so far my streak of 2 days is holding up..woohoo!!

I got an e-mail on how to spring clean your diet..I filed it to read later but I thought it might have some helpful tips..stay tuned.....

Now for my regular blogging..haha..
Today I got an insane amount of exercise and will feel it tomorrow..it started with bottle feeding another calf...then moving the herds around so hubby could shred bales..then I shovelled snow out of 2 calf pens for 3 hours...yikes...

We have 10 calves now and things are going better...I was pretty stiff and sore from yesterday's forking a huge round bale of straw into a shed....

Today's lunch was a toasted tuna sandwhich, and for supper I have a beef roast in the oven and will have some veggies as sides and an apple for dessert...I'm still getting in lots of water and had the green tea today..I drank a whole pot myself!!

Some of my other goals for the month include spring cleaning my house and decluttering by getting rid of 31 Bags in 31 Days...and yesterday I had a bag of garbaged burned..today is a bag of old towels to take to the barn for rubbing off the wet babies whose mommas don't do it....

And other goal..kind of under the journalling/art part is to take more pictures, so maybe I'll try for one a day too..yesterday I took some of the calves so I will try and upload them at the end of the blog..I don't always have great luck with pictures. Speaking of journals I am also working on the March journal..just a green scribbler that I have a page a day to write, art journal, write out may magic rock..best of the day...and tracking the monthly stuff..oh yeah and taping on the daily Maxine cartoon from my page a day calendar :)

Just got paged to get another bottle ready for the calf so be right back...

    Wow! You have a lot on your plate with everything you are doing! Way to go! I've been trying to do the decluttering thing, but I keep falling behind. I was going to try for the 40 bags in 40 days and got to 15 bags in one week...I lost steam. I need to get back into it! Great blog!

    I live on a farm also and just love the new baby animals. We have cattle now but have had sheep, goats, geese, chickens and pigs in the past. They are such a joy! (And a lot of hard work!) emoticon

Day 7 of the Challenge...

Hi..I recapped my Feb goals and blogged my March goals..now on to the 5% challenge..today was a good day...we had 2 calves tonight...I helped with lots and lots of chores..I drank lots and lots of water....

..we went to town and did some business and got the mail and went out for lunch, I had salad and a grilled chicken breast....for supper I had the last of the borscht and some shrimp and a wee bit of apple sauce and ice cream...

I've done every day of the challenge for the first week...then next week the challenge is to blog every day and comment on 5 other blogs...sounds like a fun challenge..I'm looking forward to next week :) well it starts tomorrow!!
