Scared to shop

Wednesday, April 28, 2010

Houston I think we have a problem. I can not go into a grocery store just to buy what I need. I have 2 items on my list, and I always look for fresh produce as well, but its the discount section that always gets me. I feel the need to stock up on stuff... yes, I may use it some day, but I really don't need it. The reduced bake goods section is another huge trap, why do I need to look, its like a really bad car accident. You know you should not look, but at the same point, you need to look. Same thing with day old cakes, pies, cookies and breads. I don't need them, but I gotta check them out, then I rationalize a need, and end up leaving the store with way more than I need... its a vicious cycle, because then I eat all the crap too! Some times in hiding... the last trip had me buying a soup sized loaf of bread, which I inhaled before I was home... this has all got to stop!!!

Please help with any advice-

Take that visual motivation, that picture of what you don't want to be, or that picture of what you want to be, and tape it to the grocery cart right in front of you! Or, look around at the other people buying that stuff. Unless they have a crazy wild high metabolism, they are probably overweight. That is an incentive not to buy the ooey-gooey, straight on your hips, shoot those trans fats and cholesterol straight into your veins items... emoticon

Sometimes I put the temptation in my cart and then right before check out, all of the stuff that I don't NEED for budget and/or calorie reasons I hand to the cashier to have put back!

You need a strategy, so devise one for this situation. Like me not taking money to work keeps me away from the vending machines.

Here's a thought that might help -- just remember the extra food is not only costing you extra weight but EXTRA MONEY, too. Your grocery budget will be much easier to manage if you don't spend that "discounted price" for something you will feel even worse for buying.

I have the same problem with online shopping. :) This is going to sound corny, but you may want to write something on your shopping list to remind you of your priorities, such as "I am going to lose 2 pounds this week". Having that reinforcement on your list may help you stay away from things that will end up sabotaging you. You can do it!

You have to make a pact with yourself that you will ONLY buy the items on your list. Make sure the list is complete before you leave the house, so you won't be tempted to browse. Head for just the items you need..don't leisurely stroll down the isles. That gets me every time. If you need to, have someone come along with you to get the items and you only push the cart. You then aren't allowed to pick up ANY items at all. I know it's hard and takes patience. Good luck!!

Odds and Ends

Monday, November 23, 2009

Feeling blah! The holdidays are upon us, and I just don't feel it. Having a rough time with all the focus that our world puts on shopping and having everything. I don't want it all and can't afford it. I so wish things could turn around financially for us. So frustrating to life day to day short. I know we are blessed to live in metro Detroit and still be employed, but at such a cut rate, its so frustrating!!!

I am super grateful that mom is in remission, and can't begin to thank everyone who has dropped by with meals for her, stopped in to support her, and prayed for her. The best I can do is support others in her shoes when I hear of needs.

Sorry to vent, just had a melt down last night... this time of the year Oct-year end is so expensive for us, and it just really gets to me!!! Between that and the change of seasons and diminishing day light, all leads to the blues....

I agree with BVTWIN, you can do inexpensive gifts and nobody will know the difference. The dollar store is my favorite place to shop. I wish the commercialism was gone from Christmas, but unfortunately it's out there due in large part by the media. Just do what you can and forget the rest! That's what I'm going to do.

I know how you feel, but the secret is to back off and do only what you feel you can do. Please don't try to make things perfect. Last year I bought beautiful calendars at the dollar store and nobody knew what I paid for them.

I hear you! And it gets hard to keep your chin up when money gets tight. I'm opting out of some activities at work and have cut back elsewhere as much as I can. I swear, Chamomile helps.

Please say a prayer for my mom Mary. She is in an ICU with breathing problems. I know she is in the best place for treatment. We just hope they figure out what is wrong soon.

I DID IT!!!!

Tuesday, February 17, 2009

It was not my best game ever, but I got back out on the soccer field and played. I was a bit nervous at first, and only played about 20 m inutes, but I did it, I got back out there! My knee is holding up well, and I did come to realize that I am totally out of shape, soccer is such a great workout. Will try to get back to the elliptical on my off days and continue to build muscle.
