So, I'm a "Zumba Freak", my Zumba Instructor calls me. For about a year and a half, Zumba has been my passion. If I'm not doing a class, I'm doing it on my Wii Zumba, pulling up a Zumba routine on youtube, or doing one our favorite routines with my daughter wherever we might be. I've downloaded all our favorite songs from iTunes.
One of our instructors at the gym I'm a member of left and moved to Florida. That left us with one Zumba instructor. So, if she was sick or needed off to spend time with family, we (the class) either had no class to go to or got kickboxing (yay. :::insert sarcasm:::) I like to dance. I've found that many people who love to dance, really don't care much for the more athletic forms of exercise like kickboxing. I tolerate kickboxing, but my love is Zumba. One of my Zumba classmates told me one day, "You know, you should go get licensed to teach Zumba." Honestly, it had crossed my mind, and I had been toying with it. But of course what I said was, "Why don't YOU?" And she scoffed back. LOL. And every time I got on the computer, I'd pull up Zumba.com and look up the instructor classes. And think. And wonder. And I even found a class in Vestavia (a Birmingham community). Hmmm . . . an hour away . . . One day, I pulled it up, and uh, oh. It was the last day for the "Early Bird" pricing. Zumba has 3 levels of pricing for their classes. The longer you wait, the more expensive the class gets. And it was already $225. So, I slipped my debit card out and hurrriedandenteredit. There. It was done, then. And I didn't tell anybody for a bit. I finally told my Zumba instructor who was thrilled. She had wanted another teacher on board since the previous one left. My instructor couldn't easily take any Sundays off to be with her family, because she was the only one. So, I was excited. The next time I looked my class up, it was sold out--way before the deadline! I was glad I had already signed up!
Sunday, August 19th dawned bright and early. I had to take 2 nights off work to take this class. Naturally, I didn't sleep the night before, because I was so excited. I got up, and put my new Zumba outfit on. To celebrate my class, I had bought a brand new Zumba outfit. If you haven't seen the Zumba clothing, it is really *cool*. I bought a pair of the black cargo pants with pink tags, a pink racerback top with the breast cancer symbol on it that said "Party in Pink", and a pair of Zumba Z1 shoes (which I HIGHLY recommend if you do Zumba--they totally ROCK!) So, I put that on. I packed some mixed nuts, 4 large bottles of water, some crackers, and a Lunchable. I brought 3 changes of clothing. I had already filled the car up before I left, and I was on my way. Naturally, I was one of the first ones there. I sat in my car for a bit, until I saw a couple of other folks in neon clothing walk in. (You can always pick out the Zumba Freaks. They're this weird cult of people who love to wear neon or brightly colored workout clothing, listen to Pitbull, and if you put on music with a strong beat, they cannot stand still.) So, I got all of my stuff and headed on in. I found myself first in line. The other students were quite friendly, and I even met one lady from my own town where I live (which was an hour away from this class). I met some folks from Georgia and Tennessee, and even one from New Orleans. I guess they had no classes anywhere closer to them. All in all, there were about 80 people. All women except for the instructor (Erick Santana) and 2 men (bless their hearts--LOL).
We signed in, and received our workbook and a couple of discs. Then, we went upstairs to the studio. The building wasn't overly large for a YMCA. It was nice, though. When we got upstairs, Erick told us if we wanted to sign up for ZIN, now was a good time to do so. I quickly filled out the card (It's $30 a month, but you get a discount on their merchandise, and you receive new choreography and music every 2 months.)
At 9am sharp, Erick started the Master Class. It was INCREDIBLE! The energy in the room was palpable. Everyone in the room (all 80+ of us) were clapping to the music, and we danced our butts off! It was SO very fun! :) And for the next 8 hours, we basically danced. It was very intense. When we got our first break, I really needed to change clothing (I was SOAKED), but I was so happy to have a break, I just sat down and talked to other students. I forgot all about changing. We had a brief lecture (I had to go get my jacket--I was SO glad I brought one), then we danced again! We went through a pretty complete study of Merengue, Salsa, Cumbia, and Reggaeton. I thoroughly enjoyed it! At lunch time, we had 30 minutes, so we took our lunches and ate beside the pool. It was nice. I didn't eat a whole lot, because I knew we'd be dancing again. I finally did change clothing, and I was some warmer. Then, we danced some more. They did have some clothing there for sale. Some of it was marked down. So, I purchased a "Zumba Instructor" tee in neon green and some grey leggings to go with it. I wore those after the class was over, so I left in dry clothing again. LOL. And we all got our certificate at the end of class. YAY! At the end of class, I was completely EXHAUSTED! But I was a licensed Zumba Instructor!
I had promised to bring my son a few things after my class, so I drove an hour and a half more to see him. (And I was SO glad to see him!) But my husband had to talk me home from Montgomery to my home (2.5 hours), because I was SO very tired, I was afraid of falling asleep at the wheel.
All in all, it was a good day.
As a side note, my Zumba Instructor turned in her notice (she was driving 30 minutes one way, and felt it was too much time away from her family), and before I could turn my application in with my new Zumba license, the gym hired another girl. But who knows, maybe they will listen to her that she needs someone available to sub. And I have another friend who may be looking for a partner to teach with. So, who knows where God will lead me in my quest to teach. But I'm busy working on a routine to wow a class with.
But that was my day!

Still going strong. I think I'm finally through my first plateau. I had lost 5 pounds the first week, then gained back 2 of them that didn't want to leave! But now, I'm back down those 5 pounds and ready to move down further! I've been doing well with my eating and working out every day without fail--even when I wasn't feeling it. I knew deep down that the scale would move, but when you're actually in the plateau, it feels pretty discouraging.
Onward and downward! :)

Yesterday was AWESOME!!!! Went to R's Zumba class, and she truly has a gift! The class was packed full of people ready to have a good time. And we did! We worked so hard, we fogged the mirrors up! I've never seen that happen. And I had to be careful because I was sweating so much, the floor was getting a little slick. But it was SO fun! I think I'm gonna have to find an additional class to go to. So far, I only have Zumba on Sunday afternoons and Tuesday nights.
Today (and I've only been up about half an hour) is starting out a little rough. I've had 8 hours of straight sleep, and I feel like I just closed my eyes! But I had to get up and go get my youngest from school, so there's no sleeping in today. And I got on the scale and I'm up a pound today. I know, I probably shouldn't weigh every day, but I do. I lost my first 5 pounds last week, then gained one pound back on Sunday. Then another today. But I'm sticking with the plan. I know it works eventually. And yesterday was my splurge day--not extravagantly so, but where I allow myself 1 meal that is a little higher in calories than I usually eat.
But it will get better. I still have the rest of the day (and night) ahead of me, and I'm about to go to the gym in another half hour or so. So, it's all good. I'm sticking with the plan.

Well, I haven't kept up with my blog very well this week, but I have stuck with my wellness plan. I've stayed fully in my calorie levels and exercised at least 30 minutes each day. I can't always enter my stuff on here, because it's blocked at work. So, I've been using Fitnesspal.com for entering calories in/burned off. This week I have lost 5 pounds total. I've fully stayed within my limits and still gained a pound back today. Measuring day tomorrow, so we will see how that goes . . .
I wish this site wasn't blocked at work. I like it best. :)
