Musings

Wednesday, March 13, 2013

Today I was noticed a cache of old letters from my single days in the 1990s. I read a few of them and it was great to read little missives from my mom and friends from back then. The ones that wrote me letters then are still friends today. I reached behind this box and thought I saw a wad of lint or a rock or something that I thought I'd throw away. It turned out to be a long-lost earring! This was an earring that I really really liked back in my 30s and was pretty sad to have lost. I still held onto the mate thinking that I could even make one or something. Funny the things we hoard. So these earrings aren't really my style anymore, but I'm wearing them right now! They are just hunks of amethyst wrapped with a bit of wire that is attached to one of those earring hooks. I hardly ever wear earrings anymore unless I'm off to an interview or church or some special event.

Not sure when I'll start my new job. I am thinking next week. To prepare, I've done some reading on the subject of autism. I bought a novel or memoir from Amazon for my iPad for a start about a man with an autistic son who learns about therapy and such throughout. The story reads like a novel, but is likely based on truth. Also there are books books books on autism and teaching and parenting and on and on. I am always grateful for the skill of reading as it has served me well. I have to remind myself that reading about something is not a substitute for actually experiencing something, but it is great preparation!

Not doing great at all on my weightloss journey. I have been physically active, but eating is not under control at all. Hopefully being busy will get me to bed earlier and thus cut down on night snacking. I think I will still be active with my fitness routines.

I am so excited about earning money again! I am going to bank a lot and hopefully take a vacation in Europe in 2014. We are still planning to vacation this summer to SEattle. We may have to modify it some because I have a job, but we are still planning to go.

A few days ago I ordered a dryer cleaning kit from Flylady.net. A friend posted on FaceBook that she had a dryer fire and it wasn't her first. I had just recieved my kit. Today I used one of the brushes to loosen accumulated lint from the walls of the lint trap and used the vacuum attachment to get it out. Don't ignore this potential fire hazard in your own home! The kit also has tools for cleaning out the hose that goes outside. I am going to get my husband to work with me to clean that. I'm sure it will be an eye-opener to discover all the lint that will surely be there. Lint is very flammable! It's a good thing to start a fire with if you want to use it for something besides filling your trash can.

Good luck on the new job.

I like the flylady products also. I signed up with their site but they inundate users with way too many advertising e-mails in the guise of hints and stories. I would rather use the original book the flylady site is based on. It's great.

There was a fire at a company where I worked which started in a dryer in the laundry room so it can happen.

good luck with your job- what you will find is there are so many degrees of disability on the autism spectrum- the children can all seem very different and need different kinds of support but they all need patience and understanding which I know you have.

So great that you are making plans for trips and fun things to do- I should be more planful about things though with my parents' many health problems and their depending on me it will be very challenging.

Keep up the exercise- maybe the night time eating will diminish once you are back working and are tired from exercise and work. emoticon emoticon

Have a wonderful and successful future on your new job. Have a wonderful start at making a healthy life for yourself. Do make some small changes and move toward the future for a healthier life - you don't have to make it an all or nothing prospect - make one or two small changes that are easy to do.

Yes dryers sure can get linted up, all the vent tubes. Mine are always hard to reach and take apart, esp now in this tiny overstuffed room of many uses. But it is worth it. I started out eating light but did terrible at lunch. There is always dinner to do right at least.

Congratulations on your new job! That's very exciting - and hopefully you'll be off to Europe next year. I love Europe - try to get over there at least every other year. Last year I was in Greece and Croatia. I'm thinking about going back to Scotland next year but we'll have to see.

Good note about the dryer cleaning - I try to get to mine every few months. Granted, I live alone and don't do much laundry so the lint doesn't pile up too quickly but it's still a fire hazard!

Keep at it, you're doing great!

End of Leisure Life

Monday, March 11, 2013

I mentioned in my status a few days ago that I thought I'd landed a job, and I have. I will be working in a private home tutoring and giving applied behavioral therapy to 1-2 autistic children. I have never truly taught autistic kids and have never been a therapist, but they seem to think I'm the person for the job, so here I go!

Sparking away

Thursday, March 07, 2013

I won't waste your time telling you of all the eating sins I have committed recently, but I am still sparking despite it all. I got a good workout in today. I'm thinking seriously about a Fitbit, but haven't made up my mind.

I got the roses planted and hopefully they will thrive. I covered the dirt around them with newspapers and mulch. Then it rained that night so I think they have a good start in life. I will water them again this weekend if it doesn't rain again. I am marking on the calendar when I water and when it rains to keep me aware of the fact that they may need some TLC while they are new to the area. I'm told that knockout roses bloom a lot and don't require too much TLC. That's good because I plant things and then wish them well. I am not good about constant care!

My son stayed home from school after vomiting. He slept the day away and ran a fever. I hope he will be better tomorrow. Not sure what could be wrong with him. He ate some grapes and then some casserole I made for supper. His spirits are up and he's playing X-Box now, so maybe he's on the mend.

Warm day today and sunny, but blustery too. Spring is on the way, y'all!

I too plant and say I hope you make it! We have four homes and our yards have to be self sufficient. We only have time for mowing!

I am so glad you continue to Spark even when the eating is always on track. I think that is key to being aware and to success!

We can do this.

Congrats on the job!

There are some bad viruses out there. I picked up one when I was visiting my mom in hospital. 2 days later she got it at hospital and has been very sick. Last night my brother who is visiting got it. Hopefully my sons don't get it or my husband. If my niece gets on their way back to Alaska the whole plane will get it!

I am the same kind of gardner- plant it and leave it

Hope you stay well

All the seasons in a week!

Monday, March 04, 2013

It wasn't that long ago that we were practically swimming for it here in South Georgia. Then last weekend we experienced our coldest weather of the year. And of course I had to spend the days hanging out on a windswept soccer pitch watching my son's team play in a tournament with my fellow soccer-moms. We enjoy it, but it was super cold. We were all bundled as best as we could be. Many of us don't have warm coats and such as we rarely have to be in cold conditions. One child was in flip flops and the mom in capris. I was doing pretty well as I have a big wool coat I rarely get to wear as well as a fuzzy blanket. The kids were wearing their flimsy uniforms and under armour shirts. On the bench they huddled under blankets too. It's a sight to see!

Today was brilliant and blue and very warm in the sun. I bought some knockout roses and mulch and tomorrow I intend to use my green thumb to prettify a corner of my house. I've heard a lot of good things about knockout roses so wish me luck.

I have been backsliding on my health and fitness regime with the tournament and all, but hopefully I'll be okay on weigh-in tomorrow.

Sounds like a fun time watching soccer. We ended up having no school today because of the weather. So another day to make up at the end of the year. We got 7" of snow. I hope it is the last for the winter and spring will arrive soon. They are saying the 30s by the end of the week. That will feel so good.

My roses are under 5 ft of snow! But when it starts to melt it goes pretty fast. I do have a lovely pink Tea Rose in a pot in the house that is getting Buds on for its glory later this month. My son ordered it for me last spring for my BD and when it came it was labeled Canadian so it should winter well, but I just never got it transplanted to the outdoors. Glad I didn't, I'm enjoying it this long winter. . . . .

I see it is 22 degrees here right now and the TV station has announced school will start 2 hrs late tomorrow. . . . . .but we're Sparking!

Ups and Downs

Wednesday, February 27, 2013

My weight went up in mid-February and I resolved to do better with my fitness and water drinking as well as do better with eating and tracking. Well, my weight was at 226 on weigh-in Tuesday, but down again to 224 today. I hope tomorrow it's still at 224 or less. I haven't done as much fitness today and yesterday as my routines were disrupted with a trip to see my dad and stepmother. It was a nice visit.

I had an interview today. I felt really good about the interview, but you never know. I always put my best foot forward. I did a lot of praying before and after.

Despite everything, our family is going on vacation this summer. We will be going cross country to Seattle, WA. I hope we can drive there and see things in between. I want to see Mt. Rushmore and Yosemite or Yellowstone. Kids are more interested in city life. We will see.

Good luck on your job search and interviews! I have done the road trip from Portland, OR to Minnesota. Depending on which way you are planning your drive I would say plan on Mt. Rushmore and Yellowstone. Yosemite is great but Mt. Rushmore and Yellowstone are a natural driving route. You might think about Montana and Glacier National Park which is really cool too. There's my two cents or four cents for the price of two!! LOL
