Thoughts on fitness

Monday, January 21, 2013

I bought a few fitness tools for Christmas: a ball, a cushy mat, and a resistance band. I want to use Spark videos to help me with form so I get the most out of my efforts. I can't seem to get them easily on my TV with my Wii accessing youtube, and the ones on the site need a download to work which I can't get on my Wii/TV. So....must I work out in front of my computer? The space is so confined!

Enter the IPad! If you have been thinking of getting one, it's a pretty cool little gadget. Mine was used when I got it but still very functional. The videos at the SparkPeople site will play on my IPad yippee! I bet they will also play on the IPod Touch. They might even play on Kindle Fire. My mom has a Kindle Fire...I'll have to ask her once she figures out how to get it to work. She's not that computer savvy! If you have an IPhone or some other smart phone, it's possible that the videos will play on that! With all these gadgets at hand, we can look at them just about anywhere and get our fitness on! When I get off this blog, I'm going to pull out that mat and ball and finally do some of these workouts!

Am I the only one whose fitness tracking page has changed substantially? Is it because I joined the January Jumpstart Challenge? Is it happening for everyone? I don't usually do all those calisthenics that I'm seeing on my tracker now, but maybe I should. Again, I can watch the demonstration on my IPad and might be able to expand my fitness horizons without leaving my home!

Do you use your computer to work out with Coach Nicole? Some of the things she does seem pretty hard to me like jumping and lunging and lots of squat moves. My poor knees can't handle it and my jiggle is a little too uncomfortable when I jump around, but she does other things that I can do if I try. I really want to build muscle and melt fat. I do stuff on the Wii Fit every day but maybe it's getting too easy and I'm not that challenged anymore. Maybe I should shake it up.

Tell me how you are getting your fitness done.

I use my ipod for on the go music and my laptop when I'm using a dvd. I also have a Gazelle but I prefer to walk outside. It's just been so darn cold lately! The dog and I have cabin fever! LOL emoticon

I'm rather old school and don't use ipods, smart phones, etc. My go-to exercise would be in a group setting at a fitness class at the gym, or getting a great weight lifting workout on the machines or free weights.

However, if I were to do a higher tech fitness routine I would do the Wii Fit or one of the fitness programs, like Wii Zumba. I did the latter at a friends house the other week and had so much fun while sweating buckets! I'm pretty athletic but I certainly felt challenged. I agree with NIELSENSLADY... there's bound to be a Wii Fit program to properly challenge you. Good luck :)

I still find the Wii Fit ST program pretty tough. Especially the push ups with the side planks.

Happy MLK Day and Inaugeration!

Monday, January 21, 2013

My usual viewing of The Today Show has been pre-empted by the inaugeration ceremony. Is it really true that Fox News will go off the air at 11:30 because of it? That's so crazy! But to be honest, if you want to see this ceremony, it is available to see. It looks chilly in DC and may snow. Brrr! My dad claims Obama is a Muslim, but he just went to a Christian Church today and is being sworn in on two Christian Bibles. Not very faithful to his faith if he's a Muslim! I am a fan of Obama, and I hope he can do something significant in his second term.

I saw Warren Buffet on TV yesterday and he was so optimistic. He says that the 500+ members of congress can't bring down the millions of Americans. I believe there is enough for everyone in the USA and our country is rich in resources. I have a hard time believing that shortages are anything more than political maneuvers.

ANYWAY...back to health and fitness. I have been doing terribly on my eating even though much of what I have eaten is nutritious and appropriate. It's the volume of food that is a problem! Nevertheless, I did get in an hour on my Wii Fit yesterday. Not only did I do my usual things, I did more strength training and the advanced step aerobics twice or maybe 3 times. I also did a few of the yoga moves that I only do now and then. I want to build muscle as well as lose fat.

No matter what your political affiliation, we are all Americans and we want what's best for our country and our lives. Let's don't deny ourselves a healthy body. The pursuit of happiness begins with ourselves.

March in place to honor Dr. King today! Or go on a march around your neighborhood!

Great job with the Wii Fit! I empathize with you on overeating on nutritious, whole foods. This past month I've been eating whole, nourishing foods 98% of the time, but I just eat too much of it! Portion control has always been a struggle of mine. I get envious of people that just switch from fast food to whole foods and can lose weight. But since I don't eat fast food nor eat out at restaurants, I can get discouraged at times. Really, the only solution for me and perhaps in your case is to track, track, track in a food journal. Wishing you the best of luck :)

When are people going to realize that President Obama is NOT a Muslim, was born in Hawaii, and wants what is best for ALL Americans. We need to stop wasting time and get on with the business of what is good for America. One of the newscasters said yesterday that our government resembled a DayCare center in their inability to get along for the greater good.

On a "Lighter" note, it sounds like you are doing a great job with your exercise. emoticon

Non Scale Victory

Thursday, January 17, 2013

My pounds are not down where they were on Tuesday. I have eaten some salty chips and carby pasta as well as some sugary birthday cake thanks to the back-to-back celebrations of my son and husband's birthdays. And I just couldn't rally to the exercise bit yesterday either. Nevertheless, I have been faithful about downing my water quota.

For my interview today, I selected to wear a little 3/4 sleeve jacket over a tank shell top and black slacks and nearly-new ballerina flats with a peep toe. I looked over my usual pants and they needed a touch-up with the iron. I spotted my dressier pants that have been too tight to wear for many months. These were purchased on deep discount from Coldwater Creek (clothes there don't tend to be cheap!), and I decided to try them on. Lo and behold! They fit perfectly without being the least bit tight! I elected to forgo on the Spanx since they fit so well! Now that's a good feeling!

I think the interview went well. There is no telling if I'll get the job though. I really liked the two women that interviewed me and they seemed to like me. It is only for a teaching assistant position. They said if I were hired and obtained high school certification, I could be eligible for a teaching position down the road should one become available All that is required for me to get a high school certification is to pass a test after paying about 200 dollars (to the best of my memory). I told them I wanted to work in education. That I wasn't looking for a full-responsibility public classroom teacher job and to take me seriously even if they thought I was overqualified. The money would be better than other options like working at a daycare or a store. They will let me know something next week they said, but I am REALLY hoping this pans out. The only downside is that it will only last until May and then I will have the summer without getting paid. But I have some ideas about how to deal with that as well.

One of my friends here on Spark told me about a work-at-home option. The money appears extremely modest, and there is some initial investment, but it might hold me over during the summer, or I might pursue it even sooner if this job doesn't pan out. I just want to get off unemployment and stop having to deal with the department of labor. It's stressful!

My son has been a teachers assistant for 9 years now. He works with the BD kids and loves the work. He also coaches three sports so the income stays year round. He is now taking on line classes thru a university to get his teachers degree and if all goes well he should have it in 2015. Soo it would be a great job and I have my prayers out for you that you get it. emoticon

Oh, I wish also I could visit Moscow longer. I have done a small amount of sightseeing here but usually when I go through Moscow I can't change my ticket to stay longer. Bosses look for the cheapest flight.....

And congrats on the interview. I really hope it does come through for you. One of my best friends is a teacher and she is teaching in Callahan right now and is looking at moving up to be principal. So good luck, and I can't wait to hear that you have the job!!!

Be wary of the work at home bit though. Especially if it requires and "investment" So many of those kind of things are scams. I've been looking into working from home since my daughter was born, the legit stuff is far and few between.

Weight coming off

Tuesday, January 15, 2013

Yay! The Wii Fit with fresh batteries says I'm down a pound! I was not really expecting a loss as my eating is not good. Yesterday was my son's birthday and he wanted lasagna but switched to going to Bonzai, the Japanese place where the chef cooks in front of you. You get to see them stir fry with gobs of butter on white rice and teriyaki and soy sauce. None of these are good for weightloss! Thankfully everyone was too full when we got home to eat birthday cake which I put together yesterday (from a box).

I did gulp down 3 glasses of water after the meal though hoping to flush out the sodium overnight instead of enduring water weight gain. I also drank a cup of Smooth Move tea last night and the night before to get my bowels to move (when you get older, this can be an occasional problem). I drank tons of water Sunday and Monday in preparation for today!

I meant to mention it in my last blog--in fact it was the reason I wanted to blog at all. At last! Someone random noticed that I have taken off a few pounds! She's got a few to lose herself and she's probably at least 10 years younger than me. I told her about SparkPeople and I hope she comes over, but I know pressure won't make her do it.

ANYWAY, today is my dear husband's birthday. My son was a 40th birthday present. HE said he wanted my homemade lasagna. Did I tell you that making lasagna is not my fave home cooking? Don't we all know what a diet buster this dish is anyway? Well...off to the grocery I go to get low/no fat cheeses and maybe turkey sausage if they have it!

One more bit of neat-o news! I just got a call for an interview on Thursday! Yay! Hate to get my hopes up, but I would dearly love to get off the unemployment train. It's great to get the $$, but the letters from DOL are stressful and I would like to make more money and get my career going again.

When I was the interviewee or interviewer, I was very aware that a gut reaction would usually tell the tale. I was always looking to join a team or to build a team. From reading your posts, I think you must be a great worker and will be very attractive in whatever position you are seeking. Be yourself, be relaxed (there is a tea for that, I am sure) and with luck and pluck you will eventually find the right position. I will light a candle tomorrow and send good thoughts your way. emoticon

We go to Benihanas, and the chicken fried rice could be my entire meal, I love it so. 1 cup is 370 calories though, and you are so right about that sodium. Still, for an occasional treat, you can plan ahead and enjoy! I pair it with the shrimp, which are low in calories. My Mouth is Watering.

Happy Birthday to your DH and have a great week!

Sunday

Sunday, January 13, 2013

Got in some fitness minutes and intended to eat better, but plans are made to be broken. Had a big salad at Zaxby's and that meant 4 servings of veggies. It was doughnut Sunday, and I couldn't resist one doughnut.

Had a sad episode today as well as I attended the funeral of a 21-year-old boy who is a church friend. He was killed in a single car accident at 2 in the morning. He wasn't wearing his safety belt, and he fell asleep behind the wheel (at least that's the way it looked in the paper). He was such a nice sweet fellow that I had enjoyed watching grow up since he was around 10. This reminds me that we need to enjoy life and live to the fullest, because we never know when our time will be up. There were probably more than 400 people at the service and I watched it from a smaller room on a screen.

I did my Wii Fit today and it's a lot of fun. I'm contemplating buying some risers for the balance board so that the step aerobics would be more challenging. There is a step program you can buy on the Wii channel to do more step aerobics. Those are the kind of workouts I can do as I have two left feet. I've used my resistance band using Coach Nicole videos. There are quite a few exercises you can do with that band and you can feel the burn! I have not gotten much use out of my ball, but hopefully I will finally get jiggy with it and do more with it. I do not like getting on the floor even with my brand-new-extra-cushiony mat! Wii Fit Plus has a strength training move that is considered for "advanced" users which is pretty much just going from standing with the remote overhead to lying down, remote still held aloft, and then returning to a standing position, remote held over head. That would be quite a move for me! I need to do it without the remote and Wii fitness lady and see if I can get up in any way gracefully. I'll be lean and strong when I can do this! I'm doing more and more of the strength and yoga moves on Wii Fit and trying to build up my strength while I whittle away at my pounds.

Tomorrow is my son's birthday. We usually take the kids out to the restaurant of their choice, but he has requested my homemade lasagna. I wish I had known of his wish prior to going to the grocery! I will need a few more ingredients to do it. I guess I'm off to the grocery again tomorrow morning.

My weight has crept up and I need to get on the good foot with my eating before weigh-in time. I have a few ideas about ways to curb my calories before Tuesday.

Sunday is my big TV watching night. I want to see some of the Golden Globe awards. I love to see all the fashions. I used to be more interested in movies than I am right now, but I still like to see who wins, etc.

Hope everyone is attending to their goals and NOT giving up no matter how hard the going gets or how weak they feel. If you eat a sugary yummy, glug down 8 ounces to fight it back! Change is all in our own hands.
