Getting back into the swing

Well...I'm back. I finally had my vacation in Ireland and England. It was nice to travel and see things I've never seen and do things that are out of the ordinary. I did a tremendous amount of walking and stair climbing. I was not that great about adhering to my eating program. Some days I probably got CLOSE to the 4-cup veggie goal, because the Irish are very generous with portions, but often 1/2 of the veg choice would be 2 kinds of potatoes--on the same plate! Also breakfast usually consisted of canned fruit, cereal, coffee, and fruit juice. I ate a lot of cereal and none of the fruit or juice. I made up for it later in scones or chocolate or beer--love that Guinness! I was able to drink a fair amount of water, but probably not 8 cups. The good thing is that my scales yesterday said I haven't gained or lost. I was up a little before I left.

Today, I am back on the beach. I am drinking my water and trying to get my veggie quotient consumed. We ate at a Chinese buffet today, and I had an entire plate of beans and broccoli and cabbage and onions. I picked out the bits of carrots that found their way in! I want to be on phase 1 a while and detox all the carbs I've been eating. It's really hot here in Georgia. Hard to get motivated to move, not that I ever need an excuse!

    Way to go on not gaining while on vacation. BTW, I think all of us need a break occasionally from the diet, so don't feel bad about the Guinness (love it too!) or not getting in all of your veggies or water. All the walking you did probably helped you keep from gaining a pound or two.

And, having vacationed in your neck of the woods (St. Simon, Jekyll and Savannah) I can understand why you have some problems exercising outside. It's just d*** hot and humid! I'm sure you can find some ways to get exercise in the nice, cool confines of your home or a nearby mall. I've just started doing SP bootcamp streaming videos. The workouts aren't that hard, and they do help you burn the calories in a short period of time.

Thanks for the encouraging words yesterday. I was probably partly depressed from my job situation and PMSing at the same time. A good night's rest was all I needed. I feel much better this morning, and will do much better today than I did yesterday! But your kind words helped a good bit too! emoticon

    I know you enjoyed your trip. If you can go and not gain that is wonderful.

I think that the food over there is delicious. I made sure that I ate less...though two potato choices were tempting.

I went to England in 04 and last year to 07!

I love being over there.

I wish I had the cortisone in my knees when I was there.

In 04 all the cobblestones bothered my foot. I had stepped on my foot wrong many years ago...and it really does not like uneven ground.

I was hobbling for weeks even with a tight band on it.

I really enjoy reading all your blogs on South Beach! I wish I had time to read blogs on all my SP teams but alas, there aren't enough free minutes in a day.

I am leaving this week for my trip to London and Ireland. I am glad I was able to go down a size in my clothes. When I get back, I plan to get back to SB phase 1 in case I have a hard time doing SB on the road. I want to get down to a non-plus-size body by the time school starts again. It will require more than watching my food though.

I have been able to get my body moving lately! I have been on a few walks, rode my bike a bit and went into the pool and swam a few laps. That's progress for lazy me. I need to step that up though.

Haven't been truly faithful to SB lately, but I am not gorgeing or bingeing. I ate potatoes a gardener gave me. I picked them directly off the plant so who can deny herself or her family a potato dish made from potatoes freshly-dug? I believe my calories are not excessive despite the consumption of a lot of starch. Oh well.

Haven't weighed in a while. Maybe I'll get a home scale so I don't have to go on the road to weigh. Maybe that would be an added motivation. I have one somewhere!

    Ireland!?!?! Ahhh, I would love to go to Ireland! I have family lineage on my mom's side from Ireland, I would love to go and experience it! I guess I'll have to just settle on wearing my conamara (SP?) marble for now and keep dreaming - LOL! emoticon HAVE FUN!!!

    I truly loved England in 04, and Scotland in 07...maybe Ireland is in my future.

Let's see.

I made a trip to a small country with my eating restrictions, and survived in April. I say bring what you can to supplement your diet so you can stay within your limits.

And since you love veggies, and fruit...stop at the corner fruit stand!

Thanks for stopping by my blog. I learned about an hour ago that mom is going into a regular room. She may get out this week. What wonders that God does for us!

    Potatoes are fine! Anything natural, go ahead and eat it. The kind of potatoes you want to have only in moderation are potato CHIPS! I don't know about you, but junk food drags me down, and I much prefer natural foods grown out of the ground.

Thanks for the comment on my blog. Funny you should bring up ING, I already have an account with them. I'm starting to come to the realization that as long as I am a student though, I'm not going to be able to get much of a nest egg going. My friend suggested an RSP, because you get tax back on that every year. I think I might give that a try. I'm 22 and anxious to build some kind of future for myself.

    Enjoy the trip to England and Ireland! I agree with Trececooks....just avoid the obviously bad stuff and do your sightseeing in London on foot! What a terrific way to explore a wonderful city! And it's the easy way to start getting in shape.

When you get back, check out the Spark People exercise videos. Could be a good way to get you moving!

I am not being completely faithful to the South Beach Diet. Today for supper I had a very large portion of Hamburger Helper. I enhanced it with an onion and some asparagus, but still. To counteract this sin, I just came in from a 30-minute walk with my son. My daughter was with us but on skates so she was usually way out in front. It was nice to have this one-on-one time with my son talking about why there are potholes and cracks in the pavement. I'm going to log my big ole workout and add ten minutes because this morning I did a bit of raking!

One thing I added to motivate me was to join a 10 minute fitness challenge team. That's why I did that yard work. I took some food waste out to where I'm attempting a compost heap and that area of my yard was so wild that I felt raking and cleaning were long overdue. I was a little nervous there for fear snakes would be lurking in the collected debris. I didn't end up raking that area though--I stuck close to my house. Still, it was time well spent!

    I love doing something with my darling grandchildren. Yet, Sunday, my husband was able to spend time with M'bake who is 7 and I went shopping with my daughter. It was what she wanted for her birthday.

Now, we are two different people. I noticed immediately that she went off to look in the department where she wanted. She does not hang around and ooh and aah your choices. I even found something I thought she would like...big NO!

So, Kris and I finally got back together and decided to buy what we had tried on and liked. I found out that she also wanted to go to Filene's Basement where she gets 30% off because her company is part of the same corporation. Well, went on and found more clothes!

I know that I should shop at the second hand stores as I am still losing.

Yet, these treats make it all the nicer.

I am able to wear size 16 pants.

Gave away my 44th bag of clothes this past week!

Since Bobby was able to take M'bake to the pool. I was eager to hear how their day went. M'bake loves all things about Egypt. You know how youngsters get something they focus on. In fact, he has so much interest and knowledge about Egypt that his mom and I took him to see the King Tut Exhibition last summer in Philadelphia's Franklin Institute.

Perhaps you heard that a pharaohs tomb was discovered last week. My husband mentioned this to M'bake. He asked which dynasty. Bobby did not know. He remembered the pharaoh's name began with an M but that is it. So, to help Bobby M'bake started naming pharaoh's whose name began with M.

    Slow and steady does it! Just doing the little things to make yourself active helps.

Since I'm between jobs right now, I'm going to find myself doing a lot more stuff outside (my backyard needs to be napalmed) and my home is going to be organized top to bottom! And at least all of that can count in the cardio world.

And don't worry about being completely faithful to SB. I did lose about 4.5 lbs this past week, and I certainly consumed more carbs (alcohol) than I have in several months. emoticon

  Thanks for the compliment about my family. I love yardwork and gardening for exercise. It's really nice to do purposeful exercise. I just wish it burned more calories :). Way to go on the recovery. I think that as long as we burn off what we consume we are doing what we should do. Have a great weekend. emoticon

I did South Beach several years ago, lost 30 lbs pretty quickly, but once I started eating "normally" again - I gained it back and then some! It became to hard for me - I like carbs!! hehe I wish you the best with that!!

back on the beach

Since school ended (I teach), I have been in a bit of a slide diet-wise. I was so pleased to have lost enough to go down a clothing size and was really high on that achievement for quite a while. But lately I've been eating a lot of non-SB foods. I bought a watermelon because I had an extra kid and thought the kids would eat it. I had some too. I went to a party and the food was sub sandwiches on white bread, chips, watermelon (my contribution--trying to get rid of it!), and soda. Luckily I was able to chug on water instead of soda, had 2 sub sandwiches (kind of small, party-size sandwiches), and lots of corn chips--who can eat just one of those? I am really close to my leave-date for Ireland and DO NOT want to gain a single extra pound before I go!

I had a good day today. I didn't get around to exercising, but was extra-active around my house decluttering. I took a ton of clothes to Salvation Army (too big or just old) along with other stuff. Recycled my shopping bags. Donated a pile of magazines to the library (people just pick them up if they want them). And I did some other chores around town including filling up my gas tank with $3.89 gas!

I ate strictly on the beach today too, and am working on my last glass of water. I had to eat the hugest salad to get in my 4.5 cups of veggies--whew! But (I think) I'm back on the beach!

    Keep up the good work! . I don't have that big a problem with the veggies. Since I'm avoiding breads and pastas like they are poison, veggies are the best thing for me to fill up on!

I've been having a problem with drinking all the water. I'm still 2 glasses short for the day, so I guess it's bottoms up time for me!

More pounds down

My weight loss is steady. I am reporting 2 more pounds down! Feels good to know that if I stick with my program, it will work! Not only am I eating mostly South Beach, I am eating less frequently and more thoughtfully. Today I went to Panerra Bread and was bombarded with lots of non-beachy choices. I settled for a whole grain bagel and sun-dried tomato cream cheese plus coffee (my main weakness). My friend had a more carby choice and I could've too. I also ate at a sushi place and had less than 1/2 cup of rice. I do love rice, but am not going to gorge on high carb treats. Probably all that soy sauce is bad too, but I used the light version of soy sauce to get a little less sodium--don't you know soy sauce is salty!

Now I'm getting ready to make goodies for a party and am making a SB-friendly salad and dessert even if the Cuban sandwiches are somewhat carby with that bread. I'll make them small and eat just one.

    Congrats on the 2 pounds down. Thanks for commenting on my blog. I wouldn't say that I'm binging, more like mindless eating that has a lot of salt. Right now my biggest struggle seems to be motivation.

The first time I did South Beach, I lost 65 pounds that year. This time I am exercising more, but it is more of a struggle. However, the Supercharged book is on the way!!

    Dietbuddy--you rock!!! Two pounds is terrific. I only lost 1.5 pounds this week again, but like you, I am learning how to eat reasonably in different situations.
