The Ant and the Contact Lens: a true story

Brenda was almost halfway to the top of the tremendous granite cliff. She was standing on a ledge where she was taking a breather during this, her first rock climb. As she rested there, the safety rope snapped against her eye and knocked out her contact lens. "Great", she thought. "Here I am on a rock ledge, hundreds of feet from the bottom and hundreds of feet to the top of this cliff, and now my sight is blurry."
She looked and looked, hoping that somehow it had landed on the ledge. But it just wasn't there.

She felt the panic rising in her, so she began praying. She prayed for calm, and she prayed that she may find her contact lens.

When she got to the top, a friend examined her eye and her clothing for the lens, but it was not to be found. Although she was calm now that she was at the top, she was saddened because she could not clearly see across the range of mountains. She thought of the bible verse "The eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth."

She thought, "Lord, You can see all these mountains. You know every stone and leaf, and You know exactly where my contact lens is. Please help me."

Later, when they had hiked down the trail to the bottom of the cliff they met another party of climbers just starting up the face of the cliff. One of them shouted out, "Hey, you guys! Anybody lose a contact lens?"

Well, that would be startling enough, but you know why the climber saw it? An ant was moving slowly across a twig on the face of the rock, carrying it!

The story doesn't end there. Brenda's father is a cartoonist. When she told him the incredible story of the ant, the prayer, and the contact lens, he drew a cartoon of an ant lugging that contact lens with the caption, "Lord, I don't know why You want me to carry this thing. I can't eat it, and it's awfully heavy. But if this is what You want me to do, I'll carry it for You."

I think it would do all of us some good to say, "God, I don't know why You want me to carry this load. I can see no good in it and it's awfully heavy. But, if You want me to carry it, I will."

God doesn't call the qualified, He qualifies the called.

Yes, I do love GOD. He is my source of existence and my Savior. He keeps me functioning each and every day Without Him, I am nothing, but with Him....I can do all things through Christ which strengthens me. (Phil. 4:13)

REACHED MY GOAL: MADE KOPS

Friday, December 17, 2010

After losing my KOPS status in TOPS I left the chapter for personal reasons.
I gained back 15 pounds. emoticon
That was tough since I had been crowned queen and graduated from TOPS to KOPS

In the meantime I continued with SPARK and finally decided to drive about 18 miles from my home to another chapter and began losing again.

It is not easy to maintain! And the second time around it was more difficult to lose but lose I did and once again became a KOP.

Our chapter gave a
emoticon
for me. Such nice cards and some gifts.

In the picture you will see me holding a gift given by a dear friend in our chapter.
It says CERTIFICATE OF ACHIEVEMENT K.O.P.S.
Then has THE KOPS YELLOW ROSE and what it signifies.

What an honor.

I thank TOPS, my chapter, my dear friends there as well as SPARK and all the friends I have made on SPARK.

I realize ultimately it is me alone that has to make the decision to lose but thank God for all of the help He has given me along the way.

DO YOU TRUST YOUR DOCTOR?

Wednesday, December 08, 2010

Have a good doctor who works with you and doesn't say "she is old, let her go".
I have had the same doc for 14 years.
I have felt tired, weak and dizzy lately.
He thinks it could be some of my medication as he did a blood work on me and it was fine.
He told me to quit taking the Lipitor. I have never had high Cholesterol but my heart doctor gave it to me as a preventative.
Then of course he will check my cholestorol.
Also there has been a lot said about people not getting enough vitamin D.
He told me my vitamin D was fine before I started taking it and to quit it as it could cause the symptoms. I started having those symptoms after starting the vitamin D.
Also another medication he cut down on.
I think when you have lost 55 pounds you don't have to have as much medication. I had already cut down on some of them.
So find a good doc, trust him, be truthful with him and it just might make you feel younger and healthier.
Irene

    Hi Irene,
very good advice to find a good doctor and trust them. Just wish more doctors knew more about nutrition then they do.
I think your doctor was giving you great advice to get off the Lipitor. My mom who is in her 70's had several (close to 10) episodes of short-term memory loss and after a number of MRI's and all kinds of other scans the only thing that looked like a possible cause was Lipitor. Since she's been off of it no more problems.
About the Vitamin D, I'm not so sure. I can only say that all my symptoms off SAD (seasonal affective disorder) completely went away when I started taking 2000 IU's of vitamin D.

I have a wonderful primary care doctor I trust and he's been my doctor for about 20 years now. He listens to what I have to say and lets me know what he thinks, but lets me make my own decisions. I have quit taking so much calcium and vitamin D as I have read most of us get what we need if we're eating a balanced diet, such as the Sparkpeople diet. Having a doctor who knows you well and whom you can trust is a great blessing. Thank the Lord for good doctors!

For you who thought my internist prescribed those medications, he didn't. My heart specialist prescribed the Lipitor. He takes it himself as precaution he says.
I took it for years, then Vytorin until my insurance refused to pay it then took the Lipitor which still cost me more than any other medicine I take. I will save $42.00 a month. Now if I needed it for my health I would spend the $42.00 but will be happy to have that if I don't.
I just spent over $100.00 just on gas and a few groceries.

Too much vitamin D can cause dizziness... one of the symptoms of overdose... I had a bad dizzy spell after taking a higher dose prescribed by my doc! Also, I think it was a lousy idea to put you on cholesterol medication when your cholesterol is fine. The meds can cause symptoms... why fix anything it it's not broke? Take Care and don't be afraid to challenge your doctor. Take Care ~ Pam

    Hi Irene
A great blog, very informative, I think anyone who has lost a lot of weight, should question the doctor, if they don't look at meds, so many people are on meds that are no longer needed. I also agree that you need to trust the doctor, however I have read blogs that people who have trusted their doctors for years and then found out that they were being over medicated.
You said something about Vitamin D, Were you on a prescription Vitamin D, The reason I ask, one of my walking partners just got a D prescription and the side effects are like what you described.
It is great that you have shared this and awesome that some meds were cut down

I was having heart palpitations and went to see a heart specialist. He gave a me a prescription for cholesterol pills and blood pressure pills. Never once did I have my cholesterol checked and my blood pressure was fine. I went to my own doctor and asked him what he thought. He agreed with the heart doctor and said anyone over 45 should be on these meds. I never took either of them . When my blood work was done, my cholesterol was good. No I don't trust my doctor but you can't change doctors here very easily. I'm 49 now and I've had the same doc since I was 15.

Irene, I know what you mean about being able to trust your Dr. We put our lives in their hands and it takes time to build that trust too. I have been with my Dr ever since I moved into this area back in the early 80's. I was his 3rd patient after he opened his practice. I don't know what I'll do when he retires cause I had him and trusted him for so long now.
I also have been able to reduce my meds and gone off others. I look forward to the time when I can get off my diabetic meds too.

Becky I had to wait 1 1/2 hours past my appointment time today. Don't usually have to do that but winter Texans are back and he said he has so much paper work and if he doesn't do it he doesn't get paid. Yes, he has several office girls and they are always busy.
ABOUT TAKING SUPPLEMENTS when I read an article on the side effects of Vitamin D today it also mentioned that any supplement we take we should run by the doctor as they can work against the prescription meds.
Oh, by the way I told the nurse they needed to keep me alive as I was one of the patients who had been coming the longest.
Thanks everyone.

I know what you mean about decreasing/quitting meds after losing weight. I now take 5 mg lipitor and no bp meds after losing 40 lbs. We had the same dr for 20 yrs, he retired, used another for about 10 yrs (then he retired) and now on 3rd group the last 12 yrs. Really like them too.

Wow Irene, I am so surprised they put you on Lipitor when your Chol. was fine.
My DH is going to tell his new Dr. in Jan. that he wants to try Red Rice Yeast. It has our Friends numbers REally really Good, and he eats terribly.
Dr. Oz show said he has heard it works for some people and that IF you take it you have to continue just like a prescription .... So thats a thought IF your numbers get out of sink. I know we have to do our own research sometimes and Ask Questions. So many people don't ask.
Let me know how you feel when you stop the Vit. D.
You may feel better off the Lipitor, muscle wise, that can cause muscle pain.
Keep us posted :)k

    Great Blog Irene.
I agree that many seniors are taking too many meds. For some docs, it means less work for them. However a GOOD doctor will monitor what you are taking. I tried to get off my water pill and my doc was willing for me to do so; however, my BP did go back up so I had to go back on but only on a half dosage.
I have only had this Dr. 2 years but he is wonderful and a good listener.
The secret to rapore with any doctor is to write your questions down and take them with you. When a doc knows you care about yourself, he/she is more willing to work with you.
Thanks again for sharing.

We have two very good lady doctors. One new one after our previous one retired back home and one we have had here for 10 years or more. Both are very knowledgeable.
DH also has a great heart specialist here in Texas that told him to just exercise rather than more surgery after his last bout about 10 years ago. He has worked out ever since!

    Thats great Irene.
You will have to tell us if you feel any difference after stopping those medications.
I have often said, some people take too many meds, and have seen the difference when they cut down.
We are very lucky to have a good Doctor. He is the head of the clinic. The other Doctors there are all very good and have time for you. We are very happy with the care that we get.

It is very important. I hope you feel better and more energetic soon.

But that is not what Thanksgiving is all about.
It is just what it says it is THANKS GIVING.

2. I am thankful for Freedom of Speech.
3. I am thankful to be an American.
4. I am thankful for a roof over my head, clothes for my body and food to fill y tummy.
5. I am thankful that I don't have to go to the women's department anymore for my clothing or else order from the catalogue.
6. I am thankful for Spark, for Spark Guy and all those who work so hard to help us lose weight and get healthy.
7. am thankful for the wonderful Spark Teams I belong to and all of the Special Spark Friends, some of which I have met in person.
8. I am thankful I reached my goal weight again after gaining about 15 pounds back.
9. I am thankful I have a young spirit and have a good time and lots of Friends.

God bless all of you as you enjoy your THANKS GIVING tomorrow and everyday.

    Happy Thanksgiving to you!

I have been particularly thankful this year since it is possible that I may have to give up many THINGS during the coming year. Yet I will retain the best of all -- God's love.

Also I will have my family and my pets (some people think of them as things, but I don't). I will endeavor with all my might to be able to keep them with me regardless of where I end up living.

I LOST

Thursday, November 18, 2010

Ok for all of you who want to know if I lost.
I did. I lost 1 1/2 pounds.
Our weight recorder said I lost 1/2 pound but when I looked at my book she had done her arithmetic wrong and she is our book keeper emoticonWonder what the books look like??????
One of my SPARK FRIENDS who also belongs to this TOPS e-mailed me afterwards and told me I needed a good seamstress as my pants were getting really baggy. She lost 2 1/2 pounds. I was so glad for her.
My other SPARK FRIEND who goes to TOPS with us couldn't be there tonight and she was missed.
I drive about 20 miles to go to the meeting but it usually doesn't take too long. Tonight the expressway and the access road both were backed up. I blamed it on the winter Texans but it happened to be an accident. So I pulled into a restaurant and ate and when I finished the traffic was cleared and I was home in a few minutes. emoticon
I was really tired though so lay down to take an hour nap but was woke up by the phone.
I did rest and am drinking a BOTTLE OF WATER.
So Let's Eat, Drink and be merry for tomorrow we shall lose.
Irene, baggy pants emoticon

I heard a song called "Thanksgiving is the Giving of Thanks" at our school's program this year. It was such a wonderful reminder. I am truly thankful for:

1. My God and Saviour
2. My parents, husband, children, grandchildren, sisters, and all of my family
3. My work family and friends - and that I am blessed with a good and rewarding job and not among the unemployed
4. For freedom and safety and comforts and luxuries in this American life
5. For simple things like sunsets, starry skies, the sound of water on the lakeshore
6. For second chances to get healthy and enjoy all of these blessings
and
7. For my new spark people friends and their support. Blessings to all. Happy Thanksgiving!
