Yesterday my pastor called to check up on me as a lady with the last name of Davis who was a missionary had been killed close to Reynosa.
The drug cartel had a blockade set up but they didn't stop so they shot her and she later died. I thought she was 51 but someone who knows her says she was 59.
As most of you know I had not felt to travel in Mexico for a while and had just been to the Texas side of the border the Friday before. The pastor's son met me there and I was able to transact business.
They beg me to go over to see the parsonage we just finished but they did bring some pictures.
I hope to get someone to post the pictures they sent.
Now we are looking for a lot for parking.
Please continue to pray for Mexico and for South Texas as there are a lot of things going on here also.
I sent the link about this yesterday. Hope all read it.
God bless all of you.

Irene, just getting around to reading this blog and it brings back memories. We pastored a church in OKC for 20 years and my DH used to take doctors and medicines across the Mexican border to hold medical clinics to help the people. That was before the drug cartels became so active and dangerous. The missionaries who die are heros are martyrs for the Lord and they will recieve their rewards in heaven.
While we served as missionaries in Mindanao, Philippines numerous people were killed by rebels and even several missionaries kidnapped and killed. We were forced out ourselves because of extortion/ death threats with what you might say the clothes on our backs and important papers and pictures. And God Bless you too as you work for him. Please take care...

As I hear more and more about this wonderful godly lady it is just so sad that she died in the way she did. The people of Mexico lost a woman who loved them very much.

I pray that the people of Mexico will start to see that these Drug Lords are following the wrong path and they will band together to stop them.

I always hate to read about this type of murder and mayhem. I'm a Mormon and we always have missionaries all over the world. Often times they are murdered or brutalized where they are trying to spread the Word of the Lord. Our first instinct is to wonder why people would want to hurt messengers of God. The answer I get is that they have free-agency just like we do. It, just like everything else in the world, is a dichotomy: There has to be the bad so we can enjoy and appreciate the good.

Best of luck and my prayers are with you in your endeavers.

My sister also is a missionary in Mexico, in Reynosa, and another place too. She has been in the process of moving back to the U.S... and I pray to God that she is safe while doing this! I would rather she just left her "stuff" in Mexico than to risk being hurt or killed by the violence going on. She doesn't see it that way since she owns an apartment complex that she had built there... She also has a new pickup and does the same thing, collecting supplies for the Mexican churches and delivering to them.
Please pray for her! Her name is Shirley. emoticon

Jibbie and for anyone else who wondered. They were probably taking things into Mexico for the people that wouldn't fit into a smaller vehicle.
Someone asked another missionary why didn't they just stop and let them have their money and truck?
Answer: Which would you rather have? A shot in the head or be decapitated which usually happens to those they rob?
When anyone is in a situation like that they don't have time to think things through but either they they probably wouldn't have gotten out alive.

I had read the article and it seemed pathetic that the guy didn't stop and got his wife killed just so they didn't steal his truck from him. It said in the article that he was driving an '08 model truck that was "very flashy" for that area and that the gunmen wanted trucks like that. Couldn't figure his reasoning for driving it after it said he'd been working down there for over 30 years and knew the area. At any rate, it was sad that the woman was killed.
My husband was stationed in the Navy in New Orleans and he knew not to try to get away from someone who tried to rob him, but to just hand over to them what they wanted and stay alive. He had his car broken into three times, but luckily wasn't rob outright. Lots of people he knew were.

I did not hear anything of this. I do not like listening to too much news because I dont want to become infected with the negative aspects of all the bad stuff is all they show. I am so deeply concerned that her family receives the healing and comfort and love of our Lord to make it through this desperately hurting period of their life. This is the love of our Lord working through His body when a person gives his or her life for the gospel of Jesus Christ and is taken out of this world in the midst of walking in the love of our Lord and doing and being obedient to the gifting and calling that is on their life. That enemy is evil and thinks that by taking out people from the kingdom that will keep us from believing the Lord and all His good and love and grace. I seem to think and believe her reward in heaven is great. She gave all she could give, her life. emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

I saw this on the news this morning and cried. It is such a senseless tragedy. It is really getting scary around the border and my husband and I have been thinking about moving. The Ant and the Contact Lens: a true story

Brenda was almost halfway to the top of the tremendous granite cliff. She was standing on a ledge where she was taking a breather during this, her first rock climb. As she rested there, the safety rope snapped against her eye and knocked out her contact lens. "Great", she thought. "Here I am on a rock ledge, hundreds of feet from the bottom and hundreds of feet to the top of this cliff, and now my sight is blurry."
She looked and looked, hoping that somehow it had landed on the ledge. But it just wasn't there.

She felt the panic rising in her, so she began praying. She prayed for calm, and she prayed that she may find her contact lens.

When she got to the top, a friend examined her eye and her clothing for the lens, but it was not to be found. Although she was calm now that she was at the top, she was saddened because she could not clearly see across the range of mountains. She thought of the bible verse "The eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth."

She thought, "Lord, You can see all these mountains. You know every stone and leaf, and You know exactly where my contact lens is. Please help me."

Later, when they had hiked down the trail to the bottom of the cliff they met another party of climbers just starting up the face of the cliff. One of them shouted out, "Hey, you guys! Anybody lose a contact lens?"

Well, that would be startling enough, but you know why the climber saw it? An ant was moving slowly across a twig on the face of the rock, carrying it!

The story doesn't end there. Brenda's father is a cartoonist. When she told him the incredible story of the ant, the prayer, and the contact lens, he drew a cartoon of an ant lugging that contact lens with the caption, "Lord, I don't know why You want me to carry this thing. I can't eat it, and it's awfully heavy. But if this is what You want me to do, I'll carry it for You."

I think it would do all of us some good to say, "God, I don't know why You want me to carry this load. I can see no good in it and it's awfully heavy. But, if You want me to carry it, I will."

God doesn't call the qualified, He qualifies the called.

Yes, I do love GOD. He is my source of existence and my Savior. He keeps me functioning each and every day Without Him, I am nothing, but with Him....I can do all things through Christ which strengthens me. (Phil. 4:13)

After losing my KOPS status in TOPS I left the chapter for personal reasons.
I gained back 15 pounds. emoticon
That was tough since I had been crowned queen and graduated from TOPS to KOPS

In the meantime I continued with SPARK and finally decided to drive about 18 miles from my home to another chapter and began losing again.

It is not easy to maintain! And the second time around it was more difficult to lose but lose I did and once again became a KOP.

Our chapter gave a
for me. Such nice cards and some gifts.

In the picture you will see me holding a gift given by a dear friend in our chapter.
Then has THE KOPS YELLOW ROSE and what it signifies.

What an honor.

I thank TOPS, my chapter, my dear friends there as well as SPARK and all the friends I have made on SPARK.

I realize ultimately it is me alone that has to make the decision to lose but thank God for all of the help He has given me along the way.

Have a good doctor who works with you and doesn't say "she is old, let her go".
I have had the same doc for 14 years.
I have felt tired, weak and dizzy lately.
He thinks it could be some of my medication as he did a blood work on me and it was fine.
He told me to quit taking the Lipitor. I have never had high Cholesterol but my heart doctor gave it to me as a preventative.
Then of course he will check my cholestorol.
Also there has been a lot said about people not getting enough vitamin D.
He told me my vitamin D was fine before I started taking it and to quit it as it could cause the symptoms. I started having those symptoms after starting the vitamin D.
Also another medication he cut down on.
I think when you have lost 55 pounds you don't have to have as much medication. I had already cut down on some of them.
So find a good doc, trust him, be truthful with him and it just might make you feel younger and healthier.

    Hi Irene,
very good advice to find a good doctor and trust them. Just wish more doctors knew more about nutrition then they do.
I think your doctor was giving you great advice to get off the Lipitor. My mom who is in her 70's had several (close to 10) episodes of short-term memory loss and after a number of MRI's and all kinds of other scans the only thing that looked like a possible cause was Lipitor. Since she's been off of it no more problems.
About the Vitamin D, I'm not so sure. I can only say that all my symptoms off SAD (seasonal affective disorder) completely went away when I started taking 2000 IU's of vitamin D.

I am happy to say that I trust my doctor. She listens! I just got a call and they want me to do the blood tests again to make sure that the results are accurate before prescribing medication. Going in again is a nuisance, but I am grateful that they are so careful.

I have a wonderful primary care doctor I trust and he's been my doctor for about 20 years now. He listens to what I have to say and lets me know what he thinks, but lets me make my own decisions. I have quit taking so much calcium and vitamin D as I have read most of us get what we need if we're eating a balanced diet, such as the Sparkpeople diet. Having a doctor who knows you well and whom you can trust is a great blessing. Thank the Lord for good doctors!

For you who thought my internist prescribed those medications, he didn't. My heart specialist prescribed the Lipitor. He takes it himself as precaution he says.
I took it for years, then Vytorin until my insurance refused to pay it then took the Lipitor which still cost me more than any other medicine I take. I will save $42.00 a month. Now if I needed it for my health I would spend the $42.00 but will be happy to have that if I don't.
I just spent over $100.00 just on gas and a few groceries.

Too much vitamin D can cause dizziness... one of the symptoms of overdose... I had a bad dizzy spell after taking a higher dose prescribed by my doc! Also, I think it was a lousy idea to put you on cholesterol medication when your cholesterol is fine. The meds can cause symptoms... why fix anything it it's not broke? Take Care and don't be afraid to challenge your doctor. Take Care ~ Pam

No Monty my Vitamin D was not prescription. If I was your friend I would tell his doctor his symptoms and have him ask about the vitamin D. I went online and found the side effects of Vitamin D and it was a lot of what I have. Also Lipitor and Primidone causes it also.

    Hi Irene
A great blog, very informative, I think anyone who has lost a lot of weight, should question the doctor, if they don't look at meds, so many people are on meds that are no longer needed. I also agree that you need to trust the doctor, however I have read blogs that people who have trusted their doctors for years and then found out that they were being over medicated.
You said something about Vitamin D, Were you on a prescription Vitamin D, The reason I ask, one of my walking partners just got a D prescription and the side effects are like what you described.
It is great that you have shared this and awesome that some meds were cut down

I was having heart palpitations and went to see a heart specialist. He gave a me a prescription for cholesterol pills and blood pressure pills. Never once did I have my cholesterol checked and my blood pressure was fine. I went to my own doctor and asked him what he thought. He agreed with the heart doctor and said anyone over 45 should be on these meds. I never took either of them . When my blood work was done, my cholesterol was good. No I don't trust my doctor but you can't change doctors here very easily. I'm 49 now and I've had the same doc since I was 15.

Irene, I know what you mean about being able to trust your Dr. We put our lives in their hands and it takes time to build that trust too. I have been with my Dr ever since I moved into this area back in the early 80's. I was his 3rd patient after he opened his practice. I don't know what I'll do when he retires cause I had him and trusted him for so long now.
I also have been able to reduce my meds and gone off others. I look forward to the time when I can get off my diabetic meds too.

Becky I had to wait 1 1/2 hours past my appointment time today. Don't usually have to do that but winter Texans are back and he said he has so much paper work and if he doesn't do it he doesn't get paid. Yes, he has several office girls and they are always busy.
ABOUT TAKING SUPPLEMENTS when I read an article on the side effects of Vitamin D today it also mentioned that any supplement we take we should run by the doctor as they can work against the prescription meds.
Oh, by the way I told the nurse they needed to keep me alive as I was one of the patients who had been coming the longest.
Thanks everyone.

Wow Irene, I am so surprised they put you on Lipitor when your Chol. was fine.
My DH is going to tell his new Dr. in Jan. that he wants to try Red Rice Yeast. It has our Friends numbers REally really Good, and he eats terribly.
Dr. Oz show said he has heard it works for some people and that IF you take it you have to continue just like a prescription .... So thats a thought IF your numbers get out of sink. I know we have to do our own research sometimes and Ask Questions. So many people don't ask.
Let me know how you feel when you stop the Vit. D.
You may feel better off the Lipitor, muscle wise, that can cause muscle pain.
Keep us posted :)k
Hugs Yvonne

    Great Blog Irene.
I agree that many seniors are taking too many meds. For some docs, it means less work for them. However a GOOD doctor will monitor what you are taking. I tried to get off my water pill and my doc was willing for me to do so; however, my BP did go back up so I had to go back on but only on a half dosage.
I have only had this Dr. 2 years but he is wonderful and a good listener.
The secret to rapore with any doctor is to write your questions down and take them with you. When a doc knows you care about yourself, he/she is more willing to work with you.
Thanks again for sharing.

I have been particularly thankful this year since it is possible that I may have to give up many THINGS during the coming year. Yet I will retain the best of all -- God's love.

Also I will have my family and my pets (some people think of them as things, but I don't). I will endeavor with all my might to be able to keep them with me regardless of where I end up living.
