I went to the bank this morning and the lady who was trying to figure out how much my minimum for my IRA was couldn't do anything.
She kept asking me questions.
I asked her if she worked there.
She asked me when I was going to be 70 1/2. Well that part was allright.
She even dated the check she gave me October the 5th and she was much younger than I.
Then I went to a store with a 20% off coupon went to the register and gave it to the cashier. When she told me my total I asked if she had given me the discount.
She hadn't and was kind of embarrassed.
That was a much younger woman than I am. LOL.
So we older folks don't have to be senile just because we are older.

My Stepfather who is 85 pulled up to Cracker Barrel last week and told my mother, "we've come to CB so many times, but never for breakfast!" My mother said, "Oh John, we've been here many times and you always order the country ham." So they went in and that's what he ordered.
She told me all this, because with a few other things he's done lately, she's concerned he's losing his memory and declining. That is, until I told her that I do stuff like that all the time - and I'm 25 years younger than he is. Seriously, there's a lot of factors that have to do with short-term memory loss and having brain fog that have little to do with age. Being hypothyroid is one; being stressed out is another. I think being just plain stupid is another one. LOL!

It seems like we need to encourage young people to think more for themselves. So often I hear the self defeating comments teachers say to students at the high school level and think no wonder kids shut down and dont want to learn. I have to take my kids to a tutor for them to learn the higher math because they arent learning it well in class. Funny when this tutor explains it her way, because she is good at it, they always do fine. I think we are teaching to get the end result but have forgotten that the process to get there is as important as the result itself.

Great blog Irene like you I find many people are just too busy to really look at the small details. You and so many of my TOPS friends show me that getting older does not mean you have stopped thinking.

I am old so I am hard of hearing and slow to understand. That is why they speak very loud and verrry slow. I must be wrong because I obviously cannot think straight. I don't know what math they teach in school but it obviously is not the same one we learned. I too check all my receipts and find all manner of mistakes. Age is widdom, not senility.

Let me tell you a story. When I was a kid I was good at math and we had siphering matches (I think that is what you called them). I would turn down everyone and go home telling my dad about it. I never could be good enough for my dad but each time I thought this time I was.
He would say "are you ready to take me on? I would say yes. He did his own book work which entailed column upon column of numbers. He had no calculator, just his head.
So he would give out a big line of numbers about five across and we would start. He would finish all of it before I got the first line done so he took the wind out of my sails.
I was good at math though.

    Great Blog Irene,
When we were kids we were taught to do maths in our head. Unfortunately the kids today do rely on Computers and Calculaters, and wouldn't know where to start if they had to use their heads.
The other week we were at our local Dr's Clinic, and the computers were down. They could not check anything at all or even make another appointment. How did we manage in the good old days/ DAH !!!
Until a year ago, I was a resident aide at an Assisted Living facility, even though I was already 70 myself, and there were many residents that were in their 90's that were far from being Senile
In fact some of the older ones were more alert than the younger ones. We had one lady aged 102, and she was amazing, if we needed to know something, re History or Geography, we asked her, she always knew the answer.
We all have moments of forgetfulness, no matter how old we are. I often go into a room and forget why I am there, but thats not really senile.
I do agree with Monty, we do have to keep our brains alert as we get older..
The younger generation seem to forget that we were their age once, and we have the memories to prove it, Ha Ha LOL

I have found that many "caregivers" assume that the person for whom they are caring are senile, even when that diagnosis is NOT on their information. I have had several who act like they don't have to follow my instructions on what needs to be done or throw out things I am obviously saving even when I explain why I am saving them, or think it is fine to put everything in a different place because they think I won't remember anyway!

Very frustrating!

Great blog, the sad thing is people think "old" people are senile, some of us are, but a great many are not. I think the problem with retail clerks is not an age thing. I find that their inability to be able to function is not age related or drug induced, but just being dumb, I hate to say stupid. At the grocery store, the cashier with the help of the cash register telling them what the change should be , gave me to much back. At first he said I was wrong, so in front of a waiting line, I went over the transaction with him, showed him what the change should be, let him count what was in my hand, took him 3 times to count it before he realized his mistake, customer behind me said I should have kept it. So, he is not smart and if that would have been us , we are senile. The modern way of doing things, really effects the brain. That is also why, the older we get, we need to continue to stimulate our minds.
But you, your awareness, was able to recognize 2 errors. We may be older, but not old what ever that means.
By the way, in Florida state law says if an item is scanned through and the price is wrong, the item is free. Our local grocer has a sign posted that states the law.
Thank you for sharing such a great blog.

I realize all of these things are legit. I live in an area which is rampant with drugs also.
I think the worst problem is the school system. They are not taught as we were and rely on computers and calculators and then can't find half of the stuff on the computers. Many pass who shouldn't. I'm not saying all as we have some intellegent younger people also and if we didn't the world would be in a bad shape later on.
I also agree with double checking your credit card receipts as this has happened to me twice and I caught it both times.

Irene, you hit upon something that is rampant in our American society, I believe that there are very many drug users, yes, I said drug users who use illeagal drugs and alot of people are stoned that are in the public work force, you can believe me or not, but I know it is a fact, also many, many people are on some type of tranquilizers which put their minds into a fog. Some people are also drinkers of alchohol, Vodka, which you cnnnot smell, in other words this society is packed full of drug users of all kinds illegal and legal prescriptions that impair normal thinking, so, this is what you are dealing with.

Part of their problem is everything is done for them electronically ( spelling may be wrong). when the electric goes off they can't do a thing in the stores,it has happened several times here during thunderstorms.the machines tell them how much something is and how much change we get.I really believe they can't do it on their own. and we of course were taught with out machines.

Having "smarts" isn't a question of age.(At least, it doesn't have to be!) Some of the younger generation are pathetically lacking in the ability to think. If they cant do it on their computer, forget it. The education system is partly to blame. I guess all we seniors can do is to keep active, read, pray, participate in community activities, exercise, eat right, etc. and try to hang on to our faculties. You seem to be doing just fine.

But you're right ... not all older people have cognitive or memory issues. And not all younger people are "sharp as a tack"!

Sunday, October 31, 2010

This morning I went to Sunday School class where I am the teacher of a nice group of Spanish speaking people.
There was a nice group of people and the room was full.
I did notice one of the ladies sneaking around to all of them and doing something under the table with each one.
So I thought, "they are signing a card for me. How nice."
I love cards with lots of signatures and a little something written under the signature.
Class went on and was over and the lady came over and presented me with a thick envelope. I opened it. Now I knew there was money in it.
Each had signed it and wrote something nice in it and put a small gift in it.
It added up to a nice gift.
I said emoticonI'm taking a vacation. (Not enough for that).
They are the nicest people.
No cake, no candy, no ice cream, etc.
So I think that is the end of birthday for this year except for a girl friend who is going to take me out to eat when I want to go and where I want to go.

Now about the emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon
They did have a lunch after morning service for Pastor's appreciation. The plates were served and food in our area is short of veggies and fruits.
The menu was brisket (with sweet barbeque sauce) potato salad, fried rice, and beans with 2 slices of bread (white) and sweet tea (which is usual for this part of the country) and cake.
For you who are holding me accountable I gave away the bread and the cake, left part of the rice and potato salad and ate the brisket, beans and part of the rice and potato salad.
So I didn't do too bad, did I?
The Bible does say to eat what is set before you but one lady wanted the extra 2 slices of bread and a young teen ager was happy to get the cake.
Oh yes, I did drink about half a cup of the tea.
It was such a beautiful service for the pastor. We also had baptisms and so many good things.
So now I do think this is the end of the birthday bashes.

emoticonsupposedly for pastor's appreciation since October is pastors appreciation month.
Tuesday my friend kept telling me she was having a dinner Thursday at her home for the pastor.
Could I come?
Yes, I kept telling her, since the party was at 7:00 and I got out of TOPS at 5:30 I would have plenty of time.
TOPS is about 20 miles from my home and I was to give the program that afternoon.
Then her home is between my home and TOPS only she is further North.
Then she started asking me What emoticonsalad do you like that I make emoticon
Next she asked me which emoticondid you like at my birthday party.
I said you need to ask the pastor.
She said oh no, I'm asking you for the pastor.
I thought, ok, it is for me. LOL
I will have to eat cake.
Well, Thursday came. I thought I will have to drive 20 miles to the town where TOPS is then will have to drive the 20 miles home through rush hour traffic, get home for about 15 minutes and drive to her house in another town which will take longer than it did me to get to TOPS.
I called her. Can I just come earlier?
She said I can't entertain you as my husband always helps me cook and he has to work late. I said I didn't expect you to entertain me.
Well my sons can't entertain you, one has to do home work and one has to do something else.
I said, I didn't expect them to entertain me.
Well, I said how about the bedroom you said is mine can't I just take a nap.
So I knew she wanted me to get there last for the SURPRISE emoticon
So I went to TOPS, gave the program, then talked to a friend who was having some problems, prayed with her. Voila, took up some minutes but not enough.
Ok, it is pastor's appreciation so stopped by to get a gift card for him.
Was going to do it anyway as Sunday at church they are having a celebration for him.
Went on home. Changed my clothes. Had about 15 minutes left and took out again
I'm burning the highway up. emoticon
And people ask me if I drive. Do I drive emoticon
Yes, I drive. I can't emoticonall that distance.
I get to the house. One of the sons comes out and escorts me in.
Everyone is there including the pastor.
I said don't you mean happy pastor's appreciation day?
No it is for your birthday.
I ate good for me except for a small piece of cake. REALLY I DID!
Then the gifts. Beautiful and so much fun.
When I finished I asked for my purse.
Went and stood by my pastor, Put my hand on his shoulder and said now since this is pastor's appreciation celebration I brought somthing for him.
Took out the card with the gift card.
Then I asked, Now where are the rest of the gifts for the pastor emoticon
He looked embarrassed, the others flabbergasted.
My pastor thinks I am a very serious person, the others know better.
NOW I SAID "THE END". This is why. I cannot eat sweets without wanting more.
Everytime I am where sweets are they come running, stick to my belly, my thighs, and every
place else so I have asked some of you to hold me accountable.
Thank you. I DO HAVE TO GIVE UP SWEETS. And if I slip you will know.
This is a long post but hope I didn't just lose it.

Well, as most of you know my birthday was the 26th.
What an emoticonday.
Was woke up by the telephone before my beauty sleep had time to do its work. emoticon
Then lunch with two friends at my favorite restaurant with a free emoticon
Wonderful food and time of fellowship.
Then Spark started sending best wishes and goodies from the day before until now. emoticon
fb could not be left behind so received lots of best wishes.
Even received a birthday song in Spanish "Las mananitas"
All of this between doctor's appointments the week before and yesterday.
Trying to get this old engine ready for another 20 years.
Someone told me everything needs maintenance.
So Again I say
one and all. You made my day.
God bless each and every one of you.

What a lovely blog about a beautiful birthday for you. It sounds like you had one great day with many responses. You deserve the very best. Of course, everything needs some maintenance from time to time and it would seem as you are doing that. So you are only suggesting another 20 years, that seem to be a fair number , you can adjust it up as time goes on.
Thank you for your blog, I am so glad that it was a great day for you, and may you indeed have many, many more.

Here I am at home. Ate some good Mexican chicken soup with lots of veggies then slept.
I feel so good. emoticon
Much better than yesterday emoticon
My friend got me there a few minutes before time and I think I was the first one in. emoticon
They got me all wired up, turned me on my side and I felt everything he did.
It hurt more than the ones I had had before but I made it through with flying colors.
He said I was clean, nothing there.
Thank you for your support for me and for your prayers.
God is so good.

HALLELUJAH!!! Our prayers have been answered - just like we asked Him, too! (That they wouldn't find anything, because you are healed.)

Now you need to pay attention to SP articles on how to put lots of fiber into your diet, and such things as that. Oh what a relief! I know you're rejoicing too. Praise the Lord! I'm so happy to now go to bed on this high note. Last night we went to bed rejoicing over the Chilean miners coming out. Tonight I will rest and sleep good knowing that IRENE is A-okay! Thank you Lord!

Ah, I understand if you are sensitive to anesthesia! I am weird in that some anesthesia takes longer to work, so I tell them to give it slowly so they don't overdo. Sometimes I am semi-awake where I feel what they call "pressure" and sometimes I am out

I am glad you passed with flying colors!

That is one thing that is not behind me.
As I said to some and possible in the blog I told them to be careful with the anisthesia as I am very sensitive to it.
I liked the toasty microwave heated blankets they put on me.

I'm so happy nothing is wrong on the sitter part of you Irene! Little smile there.

I never felt a thing when I had the procedure done, they had me doped up pretty good. I wish they had done that to you but it's over now and perhaps you won't be needing anymore of these dreaded things!
Have a good rest tonight, it's all behind you. Oh dear, another pun. emoticon
