See ya next week

Wednesday, May 29, 2013

"My bags are packed. I'm ready to go. " and then the song falls apart because I'm waiting for the dishwasher to finish and the grand kids to get their stuff in the car. I have packed lots of veggies and fruit in the cooler. Yogurt and low fat cheese as well. Here's to best choices. Off for a week of fishing in the Gulf. Have a good week everyone.

Spark reports, guilt food, and lessons learned

Saturday, May 25, 2013

I was looking over the reports that you can access from the reports page. I found one that I really like. The calorie differential over time. If you have it do a daily (the choices are daily, weekly average or monthly average), you get a very good picture of how you are doing with exercise and diet. I had 16 days in a row of some sort of exercise, then life happened. Now my green exercise bar looks like a mouth in need of some dental work. Oh, there are some teeth there, but the gaps are kinda wide. There are 6 days that I went above my BMR (your presumed basic metabolic rate).
One day really stood out. A huge spike. Was it the Mother's Day visit to Red Lobster? Was it the visit to the touristy restaurant "home of throwed rolls" where they bring around bowls of fried potatoes, fried okra, brown beans, and the cutest teenager "roll boy" chucks hot rolls across the dining room to land some where near your plate or outstretched hands? Was it the "I'm on the road all day" fast food feast?...NO... it was the oversized bagels that they had at work, with honey walnut cream cheese. Oh, guilt food you slay me! You know guilt food, the food that you feel so bad about eating that you have to have another to sooth your stressed feelings, and then another because you have blown it so why not.
Here is what I learned. One huge spike in my calorie intake, several small spikes in my calorie intake, and some days missed on exercise all are part of the changes I am making. None were disastrous to overall progress. I haven't been perfect in the first 50 or so years of my life, so why expect it now. In the 13 days since my bagel feast, I have lost 6-8 lbs, gained strength from my exercises, and endurance from the cardio. Will I try harder not to let the "guilts" get to me? Ya betcha. Will I think bagel spike and laugh at myself? Yes, I think I will.

you ever have the angel on one shoulder trying to talk you out of doing or eating certain things - and the devil on the other one telling you it's no big deal if you just have a taste....?
I think we all do. The good thing is that you can recognise it and learn from it (and even laugh at it)! Well done my spark friend.
And Lamberts...too much food!! I have been to the one in Ozark or Nixa? and man, I was uncomfortably full. I like the roll tossing though. that was fun.

Lambert's!!! We've gone to the one in Sikeston...so much fun! Our cute teenage grandson did a great job of catching those hot rolls pitched by the cute teenage "server."

It's hard to change habits, and we all mess up from time to time, but very, very gradually we become more consistent in eating less and exercising more.

Oh, what a schedule lover I am.

Wednesday, May 22, 2013

Last week I had to travel 3 hrs away to get my daughter form college. That took a day and a half. Now, I have this person in my house that takes up attention, food, and space. I know whine, whine! But it is the change in routine that is messing me up. I had a little routine that worked for me. Now it is upset. Next week I go on vacation. That will change things up even more. I am not sure I am up for the challenge.
I plan to take an old weight watchers note book with me as I am not sure of internet access. I will pack veggie and fruit snacks, and take my 2 water glasses. I envision walking at gas stops, and letting my family dine in while I walk the parking lot. But I know me. That is highly unlikely. So here's to best choices in every situation. That is all I can do.

We are taking a road trip in June. What do you do about the food! It could be a diet disaster especially sitting in the car for most of the day...and lots of days. Packed celery and carrots, a couple apples, maybe a sandwich on the first day only go so far until hunger sets in and I want a real meal. Here's to the best of the choices available!

I will be gone for 7-8 days, am taking 2 weeks off work. Some days to get ready, and some to recoup.

Oh boy, can I relate! Routines seem to be my friend as well. But as Johglo said, do your best and enjoy your vacation. How long will you be gone?
Hope you are having a great time! emoticon

I empathize. I like my routine, too, and it throws me when I have to change it!

I would say plan ahead as much as possible, do your best and enjoy your vacation! Maybe just aim to not gain any back as a goal. Be kind to yourself!

Tricks I am trying

Saturday, May 11, 2013

I am trying to get into new habits to lead to a healthier lifestyle. I also get bored with tracking my food. Add to that I like to take soup for lunch and there you get...
TRICK #1 I am making soup on my day off. I never make it the same twice. So I am tracking it as a grouping and titling it as May soup #1, #2 etc. I put the final cup total in the title and then freeze or store in the fridge in 1 or 2 cup containers. I track it as the portion in percentage. So if I made 12 cups of soup, the 2 cup portion would be 0.16 grouping. It then shows in my tracker and my daily total as part of each ingredient.
Trick # 2 I chop up my green salad veggies and store them in individual containers. I track them the day I chop them so I only have to do it once. Then I throw what ever I feel like from the containers in to my daily salad. If I add tomato, egg, cheese , or nuts I track that the day I eat the salad. I track my daily veggie count on the little picture tracker.
Trick # 3 I fill 2 plastic insulated glasses (the kind with the lid and straw) first thing in the morning. I take those in the car with me to work instead of coffee. I can get 4 glasses of water in before work that way. Fill them again before I leave work and I am done for the day.

emoticon Those are very smart tips. Thanks for sharing that! I get a little overwhelmed with the tracker but this would really make it so much easier! Now I feel kinda dumb for never figuring this out before - LOL. Feel free to share any other tips you may have even if you think they are "no-brainers", because some of us may NEED them. Again, thankyou!!!!
