Ran my first 5K

Tuesday, June 28, 2011

This past Sunday my sister and I headed out to Stanley Park in Vancouver to participate in the ScotiaBank Half-Marathon and 5K. We were signed up to do the 5K, no where near ready for a half marathon but maybe, maybe one day, maybe!! The day was lovely, not rainy, not to hot. The course was beautiful!! It is always fun to run when there is something new and beautiful to look at!! My sister had not been training much but she kept up with me for the first half of the run and then told me to keep going, so I did. I will admit to taking a couple short walk breaks, especially up the hill just after the 4 K mark! Race organizers should know to put the hills at the beginning of the race, not close to the end!!! Anyway, the last stretch we merged with the half marathoners and there were a lot of people lining the streets and cheering everyone on! It was very cool and motivating, even though I had no one there cheering specifically for me, people cheered any way. We all had our names on our bibs so my sister actually had someone cheer for her by name, which took her by surprise. The coolest thing was lots of the half marathoners who were finished stayed along the end of the course to stretch etc and cheer everyone else on, I thought that was very encouraging! Any way, long story short, I finished in 40 minutes 28 seconds, just shy of my 40 minute goal! If I had just skipped one walk break I could have made it but next time I will do it! Next race is in October so lots of time to improve my time!! All in all a great day and a great first 5K run!

Congratulations! i don't think i will ever do a race, but I have started really enjoying turning my walks into jogs and love the trails around here.

Good luck preparing for your next run and beating your time. maybe you'll be at the end of the race cheering the rest on!

Awesome!! I love that the people who had finished were cheering the others on. It sounds like it was a great race. My first race is in September, and hope it goes as well for me as this did for you.

Bad Blogger

Tuesday, May 03, 2011

So I have been really neglectful in blogging. Just nothing new going on! I am now on week 5 of couch to 5 K, doing it for the second week in a row as last week was just not a good week running wise! I still ran 3 days just could not complete the whole distances! This week I will do it!! My 5 k is June 26th so I still have some time but I would really like to be comfortable running 5 K before then! I signed up for Run for the Cure in October so I have quite a bit of time between runs so we'll see what the summer brings! Eating has been kind of hit and miss and I have been really bad at tracking lately. Trying to get back at it but some days I still am not tracking, but I figure since I have been losing weight (most of the time) I am not doing too bad nutrition wise! Eventually I would like to be able to not track at all but for now I still need to do it most days to keep me on track.

I am working from home again doing medical transcription so by the end of the day my wrist is pretty sore these days, probably another reason why I have not blogged, don't want to spend anymore time on the computer then I have to. I saw the rehab specialist before Easter and she confirmed that the MRI definitely shows that I need surgery. She says that now they would go in and clean up the cartilage which would hopefully help with the pain and if that does not work then I could be looking at a wrist fusion down the road. The goal would be to avoid this for as long as possible. Unfortunately the surgeon has a 6 month waitlist but the rehab doc was going to send her note to her as well and strongly suggest that I be seen as soon as possible as she does not think I should wait to much longer for the surgery. Guess we'll have to wait and see. Makes me frustrated though because if they had gone in and cleaned up the minimal damage of the cartilage seen on my original MRI 4 years ago then this could all have been possibly avoided but I guess I have no guarantee of that either!

Anyway, looking forward to going strong through May, continue Couch to 5K and complete the SparkPeople Spring into Shape Bootcamp!

April is finally here!!!

Sunday, April 03, 2011

So I haven't blogged for a while. Things have been busy, end of the hockey season wrapped up for my son, spring break for the 2 big kids, started a new job that takes up my evenings, and just life in general has kept me busy. Tomorrow the kids go back to school after 2 weeks of Spring Break! Looking forward to getting back to a routine, although they were gone for the first week so it actually went by pretty fast for me but the little one sure noticed the difference in our routine, although he did manage to sleep in most days, which was nice!

I started Couch to 5 K 2 and have completed the first 2 weeks. Tomorrow I will start week 3, this is the week I was unable to get past the last time I attempted it as my knee pain was so bad that I could hardly walk after I finished a run. So far my knee has not bothered me at all, or my IT band, and I have been really good about stretching well after my run/walks and in cross training on my days off. Hopefully these will set me up for success this time! My sister and I are going to be running a race together on June 26th, which I am super excited and nervous about! I still have to actually register for it but I will do that this week. I have been running Monday, Wednesday, and Friday so far and it seems to be working well. This week I may have to tweak the schedule a bit as I will be gone Tuesday to Thursday to attend my aunt's funeral. My plan though is to still get my run/walk in at my mom and dad's on Wednesday before I have to get ready for the funeral, will probably make the day a little easier to get through as well.

Two weeks until my birthday. I have no real goal to met before then but would be nice to be under 165 before then, which should be doable since I am 166 now but whenever I seem to set a goal like that I have a gain and with being gone 3 days this week who knows what will happen. Also changed my weigh in days to Thursdays instead of Mondays, gives me a little break from the weekend in case of over indulgences, which kind of feels like cheating but since this is a journey about health this helps me not to focus so much or get down on myself so much over a "bad" weigh in.

Hope everyone is having a great weekend and enjoying the return and promise of spring emoticon emoticon emoticon

The hill over here had snow again on it last night; so Spring is taking its sweet time to get here. Everyone now adays seems to have a busy life. Wishing you an early birthday!

Don't wanna...

Monday, February 28, 2011

So this morning was my weigh in and I really did not want to update my weight here. I'm up 1.8 pounds. I knew that there would probably be a gain this week. Massive PMS cravings/binging and then TOM started yesterday. But I did record it and now I'll move on. This journey is about the long haul, getting healthy and I am trying to not focus so much on the scale as on the journey but it is still disappointing to post a gain! I need to come up with some better ways to cope with the PMS cravings. This will be my challenge for this month. March will also be difficult as I will be away for my son's hockey tournaments 2 weekends in a row and then there is spring break. I have a plan to tackle the hockey tournaments. I am going to make lots of muffins to take along as well as take along fruits and veggies as well as yogurt. Hopefully we will be able to eat breakfasts and lunches from the stuff I bring along and then we'll only eat out for dinner. It will be cheaper this way as well. I also plan to bring along lots of healthy snack options for the kids and me. My son has to be at the arena an hour before his game time so I plan to take the other kids with me on a walk during this time, just hoping that the weather will be good enough to do so. Anyway that is the plan for the month.

I read an article yesterday, that stated we defeat ourselves with Monday weigh ins. That a mid week weight could be more accurate.
We usually retain water in our body for many reasons and week ends are the worst time to gain water weight. It is not fat most of the time. If we are more active our muscles grab water, if we are less active our bodies grab water. If we eat more salt we hold water. People do not follow routines usually on week ends, but go outside of their normal structure.
I can fluctuated 3 pounds when I eat soup and a salad at a restaurant even though I have stayed under my calories. MSG and salt. It takes a day or two to get it back down.
So I declared Weds, as my weigh in day.

It sounds as if you have a good plan. Enjoy your journey and the tournament!
Blessings,

4 months with our new little one!

Thursday, February 24, 2011

This week marked 4 months since the little guy came home to us! It has gone so fast. Two more months until we can finalize the adoption. It'll be strange to no longer have social workers involved in our lives after 3 and a half years! Who knows, maybe we will start over again for another one, but probably not. I don't think I would be able to get DH on board with that one! I would definitely say the honeymoon period is over. He has been pushing lately, especially with me as I am home with him all day. Two weeks ago I lost it and actually had a bag packed and was ready to walk out the door. DH had been very busy with work and so everything had fallen on my shoulders for the 2 weeks leading up to this point. I did not leave and we worked things out and DH has been must better about helping out when he gets home from work. He actually has been getting a lot of little things completed in the house the last week after work as we are going to be selling our house and looking for something a little larger. We just moved in July but if we had known we would be getting the little one at that time we would not have bought this place!

After last weeks 0.2 pound this week I lost 2 pounds. I don't understand the way my body seems to lose weight but at least it's happening again! My DD is home sick today and we were looking at photo albums this morning. I was amazed to see how good I looked at a time when I really did not think I did. How many years I spent feeling fat and unattractive, which probably lead me down this road to weight gain! I will get there again and enjoy myself every step along the way.
