Another Gardening Blog (Boy am I tired!)

Wednesday, March 28, 2012

I just spent 2 hours in my garden working!! WHEW! Hope I can get out of bed in the morning.

I pulled up 4 rows of multiplying onions (they were through producing) & put them in the shed to dry. Will replant next year for more onions. Then I pulled up (by hand) all the weeds & grass that had grown up between them & the rows. After that I used a 3-prong rake to break up the dirt & a regular rake to smooth it over. Now to get to town & get tomato plants to put in this space. I also cleaned out 3 barrels halves & planted one with more large onion bulbs. Needed to do more hoeing between the rows of the onions already planted so accomplished this. Will also have to buy a few more potatoes to plant the skips. We had a very large rain the day after I planted the potatoes & some probably washed off or rotted.

Anyway, I have had my exercise for the day & will relax with DH a little before bedtime.

Wow! I too cleaned out our little shed, and pulling out weeds, we don't have too many. Today cleaned the floors (laminated wood), vacuming and did work up a sweat, but, want to go walk later when it cools down. emoticon

Results of tests last week

Saturday, March 24, 2012

I promised to post the results of my tests done last week so here goes:

Mammogram, chest x-ray & blood work all good (3 yr. breast cancer survivor checkup)

Heart echo was good although I have a murmur, but said nothing to worry about.

X-rays of feet show severe osteoarthritis of 2nd toes of both feet. This swelling of the joints & pain is the reason I have been unable to walk enough for exercise (normal every day walking is okay usually). When the pain was the worst, the touch of the sheet on the toes at night was horrible! Some days it is not too bad & other days it is very painful.

Lastly, I have gained several pounds since being unable to walk much! UGH!! Today they feel pretty good & tomorrow I plan to start walking on my treadmill some. The only shoes that I can wear are sandals or my walking shoes. Hope this works out. I worked too hard to get this weight off & wanted to lose more.

Did the Doctor say anything about how to minimize the toe pains?

When I was in my early 50's I, too, had foot pain. Since then, I had both feet fixed surgically, I have had nary a foot or toe pain since!

glad you had good news. The toes will hurt and you will decide when enough is enough painwise.
Don't be disheartened by the weight gain, there seems to be a lot of weight in the air from all the losers! Someone has to find it!!!
best wishes, Sandra

I'll be praying for your poor footies. Unless their feet have ever been hurt, people have no idea how hard it is to get around. I hope yours get A WHOLE LOT BETTER soon.

Good work on the checkup. I broke my foot several years ago and it didn't heal, so walking is often painful. That was always my favorite form of exercise, too. So, I have good shoes and try to walk every day and go as far as I can. So, good luck to you and hang in there.

The computer swallowed Grandma.

Yes, honestly itís true!

She pressed 'control and 'enter'

And disappeared from view.

It devoured her completely,

The thought just makes me squirm.

she must have caught a virus

Or been eaten by a worm.

I've searched through the recycle bin

And files of every kind;

I've even used the Internet,

But nothing did I find.

In desperation, I asked Jeeves

My searches to refine.

The reply from her was negative,

Not a thing was found 'online.'

So, if inside your 'Inbox,'

My Grandma you should see,

Please 'Copy, Scan' and 'Paste' her

And send her back to me.

This is a tribute to all the Grandmas and Grandpas who have been fearless and learned to use the Computer.........

They are the greatest!!!

We do not stop playing because we grow old;

We grow old because we stop playing...

NEVER Be the First to Get Old!

Important Mammogram Information

Sunday, March 18, 2012

A few months ago I received some information that more women are getting thyroid cancer. (The thyroid is a "butterfly shaped" gland in the front of your neck). They were wondering if having mammograms was causing this change. When you have your mammograms done (and when getting dental x-rays) ask for a "thyroid collar". I goes around your neck & Velcro in the back. This prevents radiation from getting to your thyroid.

Thursday I went for my annual mammogram, chest x-ray, & blood work (since I am a 3 year Breast Cancer survivor) & asked for the collar. They had one in the room & the technician handed it to me.

Won't know the results of my checkup for a few days, but remember ASK FOR THE THYROID COLLAR.

I hope I can remember this - very interesting and I have thyroid problems as it is.

Thank you so much for this information. I made sure my children's necks were covered during their recent dental xrays - thanks to your timely advice.

When we go through cancer (or other big scary event) we often look inwards (I am sure it is part of our survival mechanism) so it is lovely to see someone who is looking outwards to others they can help.

Have a wonderful day!

Wish I had know this the 1st of Mar. Had my mammogram for the 10th time since diagnosed. Results were fine. so I have 3 more months of medication to go.
Guess this falls under the things doctors do not tell you. Thanks for the info.

I read that article also. I have had three mammograms plus two ultrasounds in the past year . . . . . I wish I would have known about the collar a year ago.

The same technician has done all three mammograms and she's . . . . well . . . . let's just say not the nicest person in the world . . . . matter of fact, she's down right ornery. I'm an easy-going fun person, but I can't get her to crack a smile -- AT ALL. I can't imagine her response when I ask her for the collar when I go again in June. emoticon

Thanks for the reminder!

BTW -- Congratulations on being a survivor!!!

Very good advice. I also heard recently that there has been an increase of thyroid cancer cases. My grandmother, mother and I have all had thyroid issues, so I make it a point to ask for a thyroid collar.

Internet Problems & Garden Update

Wednesday, March 14, 2012

Yesterday my internet connection was sooooooooooooooo slow. I rebooted my computer several times with no help & finally rebooted the modem on my satellite. It took over an hour for it to come back, but it did work.

I went down to the garden yesterday to see the damage after all the rain last week. (we had 3 inches one day & 2.5 inches the next of quick, hard-driving rain). If you remember I just planted our potatoes & onions last week. I had to recover some potatoes with dirt that we "shining" & replant several onions that were laid-over. However, it rained so hard & the ground was so soft I am afraid some of the potato rows were washed down towards the canal behind our house. Our garden is raised with boards all around it so I will probably have potatoes coming up all in one wad instead of the neat rows that I planted! Will post a picture later if this happens.

Off to town to run a lot of errands today.

How "kind" of the weather to rearrange your garden. Hopefully they will still grow well so close together. It will make weeding a little harder, but maybe digging them up will be easier so close together. emoticon

Thank the Lord I say....I wish I had a garden too, I did have a green house once, but the wind blew the top off. I planted some seeds for some flowers, it is so nice now. emoticon

Best of luck with your garden!! You're so fortunate to live in a place where you can grow your own food. We live deep in the woods and don't have any sun! There's nothing like produce out of your own little piece of heaven!! Congrats!
