9 month Sparkversary.....the good & the not quite so good

Monday, June 13, 2011

When I joined SP 9 months ago today, I never expected to meet so many caring, helpful and supportive friends!! Now I look forward to friend's activities and celebrate their weight loss victories and inches lost with them. In the past trying to lose (and maintain) weight loss was hard, but with all these friends "boosting" me, it is much easier and a lot more fun. Even being in a long plateau, friends supported me and kept telling me it would change.

I have learned many things from the numerous articles, quizzes, polls, etc. Some of these I already knew, but it was like a refresher course to me. If you don't learn something every day from the SP site, you are not logging in or are not paying attention!!

I have joined (and finished) several challenges and along the way learned new techniques and exercises. I will be joining more in the future as it keeps things interesting and motivates me to get up and "move" every day.

My goal when I started was to lose 50 pounds by August. I most likely will not achieve that and it will take longer than I had hoped, but I am not giving up. I have lost 26 pounds and numerous inches. I feel better. I look better. My clothes fit better (and in a smaller size)! I have more energy and can come up the steps in our 2-story house without being winded. I can walk without my thighs rubbing together.....Now that is quite an accomplishment for me as I have not been able to do that in years!

DD and SIL are coming Sunday and I will get her to take a couple of pictures of me so that I can post them in a few days. Until then...............everyone keep Sparkin!!!

P.S. In the next few days I will "rework" my Sparkpage and goals.

The Deaf Wife Problem

Bobby feared his wife Peggy wasn't hearing as well as she used to and he thought she might need a hearing aid.

Not quite sure how to approach her, he called the family Doctor to discuss the problem.

The Doctor told him there is a simple informal test the husband could perform to give the Doctor a better idea about her hearing loss.

'Here's what you do,' said the Doctor, 'stand about 30 feet away from her, and in a normal conversational speaking tone see if she hears you. If not, go to 20 feet, then 10 feet, and so on until you get a response.'

That evening, the wife is in the kitchen cooking dinner, and he was In the den. He says to himself, 'I'm about 30 feet away, let's see what happens.' Then in a normal tone he asks, 'Honey, what's for dinner?'

No response.

So the husband moves closer to the kitchen, about 20 feet from his wife and repeats, 'Peggy, what's for dinner?'

Again he gets no response.

So, he walks up to the kitchen door, about 10 feet away. 'Honey, what's for dinner?'

(I just love this)

'For Godís sake Bobby, for the THIRD time, CHICKEN!'

I FEEL GOOD!!! (song by James Brown)

Friday, June 10, 2011

Remember that song by James Brown? I have been singing it to myself this morning. I slept from 8:30 last night to 5:00 this morning (8-1/2 hrs)!! I usually get 5-1/2 to 6 hrs if I am lucky as the pain from my bursitis in my hips usually makes me get up after this length of time. Anyway, I am rested and ready to take on the day!

Must go now and "walk with Leslie" 3 or 4 miles before lunch. This afternoon I am going to plant a row of okra (great in gumbos) and 4 or 5 rows of yellow wax beans (similar to string beans but yellowish).

Last week I got the potatoes dug and have a 5 gallon bucket full spread on a table on our porch. I also pulled all my onions and came up with over 150 to enjoy. Gardening is great exercise.....if you do not believe this hoe some rows or bend over and pull weeds for a while. emoticon

Go forth and "move" today fellow Sparkers!! We CAN do this together! emoticon emoticon

I get a song, like that stuck in my head and it goes around, and around and around!!
DH brought home a pallet of rock/bricks to put around my flower beds. We had railroad ties which were full of termites!! It was a full afternoon of work in 85-90 degree but we took plenty of water breaks!!! I'm afraid my back "feels" it today though I tried to be careful. I agree wholeheartedly that gardening is good workout and full-filling too. Flowers and produce are great to look at and eat!!

With all the work you are doing, you should have the freshest produce around!

Making jelly and no sleep.......

Thursday, June 09, 2011

I have been up since 1:30 AM. I was in the bathroom at 1:00 and heard a car go down the street. This always "spooks" me a little. We live on a dead end road and are the 3rd house from the end. The last house is only a "weekend house" and they hardly ever come the 60 miles to stay in it. The house between us and the last house has an elderly lady who is currently living 95% of the time with her daughter since her husband died 2 years ago. There should not be anyone going down the road at this time. (occasionally someone pulling a boat about daylight will take this road by mistake thinking it leads to a launch site, but not in the middle of the night). Anyway, it is going to be a looong day for me as I have never been able to nap during the day.

This morning I washed my finished jelly jars and marked them "Mayhaw 2011". It took me 2 days to make the 11 pints. The 1st day the power went off just as I was starting to heat the juice. I had to go outside and start the generator (after I turned the power off at the meter, etc.) as my DH has a hard time breathing without A/C (COPD and heart problems). Thankfully. it did not stay off too long and I got to turn off the generator and get back on SWEPCO so I could continue with the jelly. If you have ever made jelly, the preparation and cleanup takes longer than the actually making of the jelly and you cannot "double" a recipe as the jelly will not make correctly. (or so I have always been told)

If anyone is interested about mayhaws:
They are small fruits (yellow to deep red about 1/2 - 3/4") growing in trees in moist soil in river & creek bottoms. They ripen in late April through May, thus the name...mayhaw. I bought some from a man who raises them last year and put them in the freezer. (Good thing because this year he did not have any as the strong winds knocked them out of the trees before they were ripe).

We will end up giving a lot away to friends and family. We do not eat that much ourselves.

I really need to walk with Leslie today as I did not yesterday, but am afraid I am not up to it.
I guess as you get older, losing sleep really hits you harder.

Have a great Sparkling day everyone!!

Well, you wasn't able to get any rest from that car coming down the road in the middle of the night. Just stay safe. I wish I knew how to make my own jelly. I've been meaning to go to my grandparents to learn. One day, I am going to.

Researching microwaves

Thursday, June 02, 2011

After my trip to Wally World (this is what we call Wal-Mart around here), I still do not have a microwave. They only had 7 and most of those were very small, low wattage which I do not want. Will check on-line today for one and probably order. Anyone have any suggestions?

The library where I frequent finally opened and it is large and nice. Stopped by yesterday and they still do not have the new DVDs by Leslie that they ordered for me to try. Got a book written by a local attorney about some of his previous criminal cases. After reading a few pages it looks interesting. He changed the names, but being a local I know who he is talking about. Hope I can figure out a way to read some on the treadmill today.

Go forth fellow Sparkies and exercise! We CAN do this one day at a time!!

You reminded me that I have a library card I've had for several years. I used it that one time, not since. I need to go by and see what they have. My microwave isn't real big nor is it small. I had a large built in one in my house. This one is fine for me. The light went out in it last week. I only had it three years. They don't make things like they use to. Nite emoticon
