Joined a Gym Today

Wednesday, July 15, 2009

I'd been thinking about it for a while. I got the book, "Younger Next Year for Women", and one of the co-authors really pushes joining a gym. Planet Fitness has been advertising a special - $99 for a year. I see the sign every time I drive by. It's about a mile & a half from my house. M-F it's open 24 hours, 12 hours each on the weekend.

I went by the gym and checked it out tonight. Lots and lots of cardio machines (treadmills, ellipticals, something else I didn't recognise), free weights, the usual upper body and lower body machines, and a 30 minute workout circuit. Clean, open, and friendly. Plan to start tomorrow, and go to training classes.

Got some new walking shoes today, too. I went to Lady Foot Locker, tried on the Reebok Easytones. Guess what? They don't come in wide. Very disappointing - I already have a bunion starting on my right foot. I got Nike Air Zooms instead. They have like litle pads at the inner and outer sides of the feet, almost like built in bunion pads. Feel great. I wore them out of the store.

Walked the pups 2 miles this morning. Shalako tried her "plant my feet and don't go nowhere" trick. I might have been more impressed if she hadn't tried it 10 minutes into the walk, still going slow as part of the warm-up. I also knew she'd pooped before we left the yard. She was just trying to get me to pick her up and carry her for a while. Nope! I'm on to her. I let her sniff, but didn't pick her up. Gave them both water and treats a couple of times (odd how she perked right up for a treat), and she walked the whole way.
(yeah, she's actually tangled in the leads here - I couldn't get a pix of her planting her feet)

This is after giving a treat.

I joined Defined Fitness on Juan Tabo at the beginning of June and I love it. The registration fee is lifetime, so that if you decide you don't want to go for awhile and then return later, you don't have to pay the fee again. If you have more than 10 people at your workplace you can purchase a corporate membership...I think we are paying $32 a month. The fitness classes are great, especially their spinning classes. They just purchased new state of the art cardio machines....very good and smooth machines. There is a huge variety of weight machines and free weights. I go almost every morning; it is a great way to start the day and have structured work out time.

I never would go to a gym more then 2 or 3 months. Don't like exercising in front of strangers. lol
I wish you luck.
Your dogs are so cute.

I am sooo happy for you .. I have been thinking of joining one too.. my 22 year old daughter is a personal fitteness trainer at a 24 hour fittness gym and has really been on me to join.. she will gift me the membership.. I just hate the thought of all the commitment.. but I might have to give in so that I can meet my goals and she says it looks really bad if she can't even get her own mom to work out. hahah.. got love what we will do for our kids.. LOL

Happy Dance!

Monday, July 13, 2009

I finally broke the 200 barrier. Been teasing at it for a couple of months - 205, 204, 204, 203.5, etc. The first 30 came off easier, then, the dreaded plateau. But, I didn't give up, I kept chipping away, slowly, slowly.

Reading all the motivational, fitness, and nutrition blogs and articles. Getting support from others here on SP.

It's not my final goal, and I know it's silly because it's just a number, BUT ... It's a good day. Whipped out the Challenge stength workout early this morning (around midnight). Been doing the Quickfire Challenge windmill side lunges thru the day. Had a wonderful massage. Made my deltoids feel much better!

Just a great day all around.

Doggy Graduation Day

Sunday, July 12, 2009

Ya! The pups graduated from advanced class today. They managed to sit/say, down/stay, and stand/stay (as well as sit, down and stand waits - yes, there's a difference) long enough despite distractions to pass graduation. The trainer said "they all passed with flying colors", to which I mumbled, "musta had low colors". Both dogs think "stand" is just an intermediate position between sit and going somewhere, but they managed to be standing still everytime the instructor came by (ha!)

(I know, the pictures look very much like the ones 6 weeks ago when they graduated from Intermediate Class).

Hot, hot hot out today - susposed to peak near 99.
We took a slow walk this morning to a school park about half a mile from home. The grass was long and damp, and there were lots of trees, so I walked them around and around the park in the shade, then slow walked home again. Practiced the sit and down stays (I forgot about stand). "Stay" means stay until I return to you and give the release word. "Wait" means stay until I call you to come to me, or give you the release word from over here. I tend to forget and use Stay for both, then tell them to come to me. (oops) After cooling off at home, we took a slow walk over to Petsmart for the class. Like I said, they managed to be doing the right things when the instructor came by aisle we were in, so they passed. We had to put one dog in the training area in a cage, while I worked the other in an aisle separately. Nice slow walk back home, until Shalako planted her feet and I was tired of walking so slow - picked up the Princess and carried her home. Samurai led the way, as usual.

Just finished making a kiwi, banana, and blueberry salad. I left the strawberries in the fridge too long (got them last week) and they're all moldy. Shoot. Sprinkled a little lime juice over the fruit to keep the bananas fresh.

Tomorrow is the official weigh-in for the first week of The Challenge. I was 200 this morning - lost half a pound!. This plateau is driving me crazy, but I'm still chipping away at it. Maybe I'll mysteriously drop the other half pound and break 200 finally. (Sometimes I've dropped .5 to 1.5 pounds overnight. Wish I knew why)

Hallelujah, I'm breaking thru, I'm breaking thru!

Rest Days Are Hard

Saturday, July 11, 2009

OK - so yesterday I was doing The Challenge workout. As I was doing the wall pushups, I was admiring my arms. I'm actually getting muscle definition! Haven't had that since basic training for the Army, a lifetime ago.

I've been on vacation this week, and really walking a lot with the pups. I had to give Princess Puff-A-Lot a ride in another shopping cart yesterday - I found it on a street corner and returned it to the shopping lot.

The Energizer puppy thinks it's great that we're walking so much, and wants to keep going.
Neither one is doing well with the dog class lessons, tho - they seem to think I'm speaking a foreign language when I tell them "down-stay".

My arm muscles are sore today. I have to give myself a rest period to let them recover. A planned slacker day.

It's hard - I want to get up and do something; anything. I haven't even walked the pups yet - and it's getting on towards noon and the temperature is supposed to peak near 98. I have less than 300 steps on my pedometer right now. Sigh.
I stayed up late last night and planned to sleep in. Then one of my cats, Starkist, had a crazy outbreak @ 06. He ran around, jumping up (thump!) onto furniture, to the floor (thump!), and over me (thump, thump, thump!). He got all the others excited. Sleeptime over. Starkist didn't understand why I was upset.

At least I'm still on vacation ... Took some Robaxin for my sore muscles and am getting sleepy. My plan for today? Do it later!
