I've Grown Accustomed to Her Face

Friday, February 24, 2012

Earlier this month, I saw a production of "My Fair Lady" with my buddy Bex. Next month, we're scheduled for "Young Frankenstein". For some reason, I've been humming "I've Grown Accustomed to Her Face" today (when I wasn't "Putting on the Ritz")

Lyrics by: Alan Jay Lerner

Music by: Frederick Loewe

From the Show: My Fair Lady (1956) Professor Henry Higgins sings this lament when Eliza Doolittle has walked out on him. He realizes how much he will miss her.

I've grown accustomed to her face, she almost makes my day begin,
I've grown accustomed to the tune she whistles night and noon,
Her smiles, her frowns, her ups, her downs
Are second nature to me now, like breathing out and breathing in,

I was serenely independent and content before we met
Surely I could always be that way again and yet,
I've grown accustomed to her looks, accustomed to her voice,
Accustomed to her face.

I've grown to her face, she almost makes the day begin,
I've gotten used to hear her say Good Morning every day,
Her joys, her woes, her highs, her lows
Are second nature to me now, like breathing out and breathing in,

I'm very grateful she's a woman, and so easy to forget
Rather like a habit one can always break and yet
I've grown accustomed to the trace of something in the air,
Accustomed to her face.

The production of Young Frankenstein sounds like fun. I remember the movie was funny. Mel Brooks had some silly funny movies that I haven't watched in years. Maybe I should watch one to get a laugh because laughter is so good or us. Have a great day!

Iko Iko

Thursday, February 23, 2012

I missed Marde Gras! I'm usually working with my buddy who is from New Orleans, but I was off this week. It just snuck up on me. So, in honor of the occasion, here's the Jock-A-Mo (or Iko Iko) song. I first heard it in the movie "Rainman".

Per Wikipedia: "Iko Iko" is a much-covered New Orleans song that tells of a parade collision between two "tribes" of Mardi Gras Indians and the traditional confrontation. The song, under the original title "Jock-A-Mo", was written in 1953 by James "Sugar Boy" Crawford in New Orleans. The story tells of a "spy boy" (i.e. a lookout for one band of Indians) encountering the "flag boy" or guidon carrier for another "tribe". He threatens to "set the flag on fire".

My grand-ma and your grand-ma were
Sittin' by the fire
My grand-ma told your grand-ma :
" I'm gonna set your flag on fire "

Talkin' 'bout
Hey now ! Hey now !
Iko, iko unday
Jock-a-mo fee-no ai na-né
Jock-a-mo fee na-né

Look at my king all dressed in red
Iko, iko unday
I betcha five dollars he'll kill you dead
Jock-a-mo fee na-né

Talkin' 'bout
Hey now ! Hey now !
Iko, iko unday
Jock-a-mo fee-no ai na-né
Jock-a-mo fee na-né

See that girl all dressed in green
Iko, iko unday
She's not a girl, she's a lovin' machine
Jock-a-mo fee na-né

Talkin' 'bout
Hey now ! Hey now !
Iko, iko unday
Jock-a-mo fee-no ai na-né
Jock-a-mo fee na-né

Mardi gras's coming and it won't belong
Iko, iko unday
Till everybody's singing my little song
Jock-a-mo fee na-né

Talkin' 'bout
Hey now ! Hey now !
Iko, iko unday
Jock-a-mo fee-no ai na-né
Jock-a-mo fee na-né

Talkin' 'bout
Hey now ! Hey now !
Iko, iko unday
Jock-a-mo fee-no ai na-né
Jock-a-mo fee na-né

I have only heard of mardi gras. I guess its because Im west coast canada that I have not even heard of the song. I am a big collector of music, so i was a little surprised, in a way.

Love the pictures!

My daugher went to a couple of Mardi Gras parades here, and brought back a lot of loot. It's a big thing here in Pensacola also.

The song title didn't ring a bell with me until I started reading the first line of the song then immediately recognized it. Thanks for the history on it.

Return to Sender

Tuesday, February 21, 2012

Elvis, 1962. I love the song, but seriously, is he stupid? What more can she do to make it clear to him? Today, she'd be blocking his Emails and phone calls!

I gave a letter to the postman,
he put it his sack.
Bright in early next morning,
he brought my letter back.

She wrote upon it:
Return to sender, address unknown.
No such number, no such zone.
We had a quarrel, a lover's spat
I write I'm sorry but my letter keeps coming back.

So then I dropped it in the mailbox
And sent it special D.
Bright in early next morning
it came right back to me.

She wrote upon it:
Return to sender, address unknown.
No such number, no such zone.

This time I'm gonna take it myself
and put it right in her hand.
And if it comes back the very next day
then I'll understand the writing on it

Return to sender, address unknown.
No such person, no such zone.

All I Have to Do Is Dream

Tuesday, February 21, 2012

I've had cold symptoms for over a week - been taking over the counter (OTC) meds for the symptoms. On an off day last week, I took a swipe of the liquid generic nyquil type stuff (er, I didn't measure it, just swigged it). I slept most of 15 hours that day. OK, I figured I'd just overdone it on the dose. Last night, before 2200 (10P) I took 2 capsules of generic stuff, thinking that a correct dose would be fine. Sort of woke up at 0730, pottied the dogs, stumbled back to bed. Woke up when my masssage therapist called me at 1000 (I replaced my stolen phone yesterday) - I'd totally spaced our standing appointment! Grr - rescheduled for Thursday, fed the critters, took my morning meds, and back to bed. Sheesh! 1130 - get up all ready. sluggo! Guess I'm more sensitive to the stuff that I used to be.

Another Everly Brothers hit from 1958, written by Felice and Boudleaux Bryant.

Drea-ea-ea-ea-eam, dream, dream, dream
Drea-ea-ea-ea-eam, dream, dream, dream
When I want you in my arms
When I want you and all your charms
Whenever I want you, all I have to do is
Drea-ea-ea-ea-eam, dream, dream, dream

When I feel blue in the night
And I need you to hold me tight
Whenever I want you, all I have to do is
Drea-ea-ea-ea-eam

I can make you mine, taste your lips of wine
Anytime night or day
Only trouble is, gee whiz
I'm dreamin' my life away

I need you so that I could die
I love you so and that is why
Whenever I want you, all I have to do is
Drea-ea-ea-ea-eam, dream, dream, dream
Drea-ea-ea-ea-eam

I can make you mine, taste your lips of wine
Anytime night or day
Only trouble is, gee whiz
I'm dreamin' my life away

I need you so that I could die
I love you so and that is why
Whenever I want you, all I have to do is
Drea-ea-ea-ea-eam, dream, dream, dream
Drea-ea-ea-ea-eam, dream, dream, dream

FADE
Drea-ea-ea-ea-eam, dream, dream, dream

It can happen without any warning becoming sensitive or allergic to medicine. I had some dental work done a couple of years ago, and he prescribed amococilyn (sp) and I broke out in hives. Up until then I had no problem taking it. At least you figured it out now while staying at home and not driving.

That'll Be the Day

Monday, February 20, 2012

I used to think this was a love song ... now I'm wondering if he's a stalker??? The Everly Brothers, 1965

Well, that'll be the day, when you say goodbye
Yes, that'll be the day, when you make me cry
You say you're gonna leave, you know it's a lie
'Cause that'll be the day when I die

Well, you give me all your loving and your turtle doving
All your hugs and kisses and your money too
Well, you know you love me baby, until you tell me, maybe
That some day, well I'll be through

Well, when Cupid shot his dart he shot it at your heart
So if we ever part and I leave you
You sit and hold me and you tell me boldly
That some day, well I'll be blue

Well, that'll be the day, woo hoo
That'll be the day, woo hoo
That'll be the day, woo hoo
That'll be the day
