Ode to Billy Joe

Thursday, August 11, 2011

It's not too often that a song really, really tells a story. Bobby Gentry amazed and amused us in 1967. Truth or fiction - and just what was it they threw off the Tallahatchie Bridge?

It was the third of June, another sleepy, dusty Delta day
I was out choppin' cotton and my brother was balin' hay

And at dinner time we stopped and walked back to the house to eat
And Mama hollered out the back door "y'all remember to wipe your feet"

And then she said "I got some news this mornin' from Choctaw Ridge"
"Today Billy Joe MacAllister jumped off the Tallahatchie Bridge"

And Papa said to Mama as he passed around the blackeyed peas
"Well, Billy Joe never had a lick of sense, pass the biscuits, please"

"There's five more acres in the lower forty I've got to plow"
And Mama said it was shame about Billy Joe, anyhow

Seems like nothin' ever comes to no good up on Choctaw Ridge
And now Billy Joe MacAllister's jumped off the Tallahatchie Bridge

And Brother said he recollected when he and Tom and Billie Joe
Put a frog down my back at the Carroll County picture show

And wasn't I talkin' to him after church last Sunday night?
"I'll have another piece of apple pie, you know it don't seem right"

"I saw him at the sawmill yesterday on Choctaw Ridge"
"And now you tell me Billie Joe's jumped off the Tallahatchie Bridge"

And Mama said to me "Child, what's happened to your appetite?"
"I've been cookin' all morning and you haven't touched a single bite"

"That nice young preacher, Brother Taylor, dropped by today"
"Said he'd be pleased to have dinner on Sunday, oh, by the way"

"He said he saw a girl that looked a lot like you up on Choctaw Ridge"
"And she and Billy Joe was throwing somethin' off the Tallahatchie Bridge"

A year has come 'n' gone since we heard the news 'bout Billy Joe
And Brother married Becky Thompson, they bought a store in Tupelo

There was a virus going 'round, Papa caught it and he died last Spring
And now Mama doesn't seem to wanna do much of anything

And me, I spend a lot of time pickin' flowers up on Choctaw Ridge
And drop them into the muddy water off the Tallahatchie Bridge

I always loved that song. The pics really made me smile this morning. Hope you have an awesome day today. And stay away from Choctaw Ridge and the Tallihatchie Bridge. Might be haunted.

It truely was a great song. One of my favorites. Rumor has it that this was a true story and that they threw a stillborn child off of that bridge. Don't know if it was true or not but they made a movie out of it. Great pictures too... emoticon

She Works Hard for the Money

Wednesday, August 10, 2011

OK, I'm still on vacation, but ... I usually work hard for the money!

Donna Summer 1983

She works hard for the money
So hard for it, honey
She works hard for the money
So you better treat her right

She works hard for the money
So hard for it, honey
She works hard for the money
So you better treat her right

I met her there in the corner stand
And wonders where she is
And it's strange to her
Some people seem to have everything
9 am on the hour hand
And she's waiting for the bell
And she's looking real pretty
She's waiting for her clientele

She works hard for the money
So hard for it, honey
She works hard for the money
So you better treat her right

She works hard for the money
So hard for it, honey
She works hard for the money
So you better treat her right

Twenty-eight years have come and gone
And she's seen a lot of tears
Of the ones who come in
They really seem to need her there
It's a sacrifice working day to day
For little money just tips for pay
But it's worth it all
To hear them say that they care

She works hard for the money
So hard for it, honey
She works hard for the money
So you better treat her right

Already knows, she's seen her bad times
Already knows, these are the good times
She'll never sell out, she never will
Not for a dollar bill
She works haaaaard

[Instrumental Interlude]

She works hard for the money
So hard for it, honey
She works hard for the money
So you better treat her right

She works hard for the money
So hard for it, honey
She works hard for the money
So you better treat her right
Alright....

Brick House

Tuesday, August 09, 2011

I've been hearing this on my MP3/radio every day while I'm out walking the pups - I know the lyrics are sexist, but I have to admit I boogie along while I'm listening to this song.

The Commodores in 1977

[Chorus:]
She's a brick house
Mighty might just lettin' it all hang out
She's a brick house
The lady's stacked and that's a fact,
ain't holding nothing back.

She's a brick house
She's the one, the only one,
who's built like a amazon
We're together everybody knows,
and here's how the story goes.

She knows she got everything
a woman needs to get a man, yeah.
How can she lose with what she use
36-24-36, what a winning hand!

[Chorus]
She's a brick house
Mighty might just lettin' it all hang out
She's a brick house
The lady's stacked and that's a fact,
ain't holding nothing back.

The clothes she wears, the sexy ways,
make an old man wish for younger days
She knows she's built and knows how to please
Sure enough to knock a man to his knees

[Chorus]
She's a brick house
Mighty might just lettin' it all hang out
She's a brick house
The lady's stacked and that's a fact,
ain't holding nothing back.

Shake it down, shake it down now [repeat]

I have always loved this song, too. Great to boogie down to! I think we all get a little too wrapped up in that politically correct crap--just have some fun!

(Love is Like a) Heatwave

Tuesday, August 09, 2011

It hit 98 today. I walked the pups this morning before 9 - it was getting hot on the way back. Later, I walked over to Golden Corral for dinner - the heat was rolling off the sidewalks and streets. The breeze was hot. Sheesh!

Martha and the Vandellas 1963

Whenever I'm with you
Something inside starts burning
and my heart's filled with fire

Stop this - it's got a hold on me
I said this ain't the way it's supposed to be

It's like a heatwave burning in my heart
I can't keep from crying
Tearing me apart

Whenever he calls my name
Sounds so soft sweet and plain
Right then, right there
I feel this burning pain
This high blood pressure's got a hold on me
I said this ain't the way love's supposed to be

It's like a heatwave burning in my heart
I can't keep from crying
Tearing me apart

Whenever I'm with you
Something inside starts burning
And my hearts filled with fire

Something's got me amazed
Don't know what to do
My head's in a haze

It's like a heatwave burning in my heart
I can't keep from crying
Tearing me apart

It's been in the triple-digits here in Texas for weeks now, and no end in sight yet. Sigh. At least with the drought it is a dry heat...

It hit 96 here yesterday. I had hoped we were done with those high temps when it was staying in the upper 80's for a while. Should have known better. Stay as cool as you can.

Fly, Robin, Fly

Monday, August 08, 2011

I found a new walk for the pups the last couple of days - straight out east to Tramway and back - about 4.5 miles. Takes about 1 hour and 45 minutes. We have to get back before 10 or it's too hot. Shalako has been a real trooper. Oddly enough, it's Samurai that's been having problems. Ever since I got them groomed Sunday, he's been lagging on the walks. He tries to look back at his butt while walking, scratch himself (while walking - hysterical!), and boot-scoot. He ONLY does it while in harness on lead - never while running around the yard or in the house. I've checked his butt, hind legs, under the harness ...

My elderly neighbor's birthday is next week. I decided to get her one of the "I've fallen and can't get up" thingies. Told her I'd pay for it for a year. I like to look over at her house thru the patio door (not peeping Thomasina!) to see if her TV is off at night and back on in the morning. I worry about her falling.

On Sundays, on the way back from the walk, I buy my Sunday paper from the woman at the corner. She calls the pups "Floppsy and Moppsy". Today, we were talking about her corgi, the rats (her son's) and fish. I asked if she wanted birds, and she said yes. I washed out their cage and toys, and gave her my parakeets (and a big bag of seed). Finally, after being banned from the bedroom for a year, the cats can sleep with me again.

Today's song is by Silver Convention in 1975. It's short and repetitive!

Fly, robin fly
Fly, robin fly
Fly, robin fly
Up, up to the sky!

Fly, robin fly
Fly, robin fly
Fly, robin fly
Up, up to the sky!

Fly, robin fly
Fly, robin fly
Fly, robin fly
Up, up to the sky!

That's a wonderful gift for your neighbor. When my mother was alive she had one and it really did make a huge difference in her a life a few times when she fell. It worked great, they called EMS and then called me. I've seen it be a real lifesaver in other people's lives too, since I work with the elderly.
