(I'm Not Your) Steppin' Stone

Saturday, April 30, 2011

I could have used some stones in my pocket tonight when I walked the dogs before work - more high sustained winds with gusts over 40 mph - at one point, I literally stopped in my tracks until the gusts dropped enough for me to continue. Good thing we were almost done with the 1.5 mile walk!

by Tommy Boyce & Bobby Hart - recorded first by Paul Revere and the Raiders, but known most from the Monkee's version - both in 1966. Other artists have also covered it, but who cares?

I-I-I-I-I'm not your steppin' stone
I-I-I-I-I'm not your steppin' stone
You're trying to make your mark in society,
You're using all the tricks that you used on me,
You're reading all them high-fashion magazines,
The clothes you're wearing, girl, they're causing public scenes.

I said, I-I-I-I-I'm not your steppin' stone
I-I-I-I-I'm not your steppin' stone
(No!) Not your steppin' stone
Not your steppin' stone

When I first met you, girl, you didn't have no shoes,
But now you're walking 'round like you're front page news,
You've been awful careful 'bout the friends you choose,
But you won't find my name in your book of "Who's Who".

I said, I-I-I-I-I'm not your steppin' stone
(No, girl, not me!)I-I-I-I-I'm not your steppin' stone (No!)
Not your steppin' stone
I'm not your steppin' stone

Not your steppin' stone
Not your steppin' stone
Not your steppin' stone
Not your steppin' stone

No, girl, I'm not your steppin' stone
Not your steppin' stone
Not your steppin' stone
Not your steppin' stone

Poor Poor Pitiful Me

Friday, April 29, 2011

I woke up early (2 hours before my alarm was set - grr!). Walked the pups and they went really slowly . Poked my eye with the mascara brush. Couldn't find my glasses - which I had been wearing before my shower - had to put on my backup pair (at least one prescription behind). So, driving in, I'm thinking "poor, poor pitiful me". Then, I realized I'd just sailed thru 3 lights that normally I catch red! Hey, better karma. Unfortunately, it's been very, very busy.

Luinda Ronstadt (and others) 1977

Well I lay my head
on the railroad track

Waiting on the Double E
But the train don't run

by here no more
Poor poor pitiful me

Poor poor pitiful me
Poor poor pitiful me
Oh these boys won't let me be
Lord have mercy on me
Woe woe is me

Well I met a man out in Hollywood
Now I ain't naming names
Well he really worked me over good

Just like Jesse James
Yes he really worked me over good
He was a credit to his gender

Put me through some changes Lord
Sort of like a Waring blender

Poor poor pitiful me
Poor poor pitiful me
Oh these boys won't let me be
Lord have mercy on me
Woe woe is me

Well I met a boy in the Vieux Carres
Down in Yokohama
He picked me up and he threw me down
He said "Please don't hurt me Mama"

Poor poor pitiful me
Poor poor pitiful me
Oh these boys won't let me be
Lord have mercy on me
Woe woe is me

Poor poor poor me
Poor poor pitiful me
Poor poor poor me

Poor poor pitiful me
Poor poor poor me
Poor poor pitiful me...

Girls Just Wanna Have Fun

Thursday, April 28, 2011

Cyndi Lauper's breakout hit in 1983, wrtiten by Robert Hazard (many other artists covered it, too, but Cyndi is my favorite)

I come home in the morning light
My mother says when you gonna live your life right

Oh mother dear we're not the fortunate ones
And girls they want to have fun
Oh girls just want to have fun

The phone rings in the middle of the night
My father yells what you gonna do with your life

Oh daddy dear you know you're still number one
But girls they want to have fun
Oh girls just want to have -

That's all they really want
Some fun
When the working day is done

Girls - they want to have fun
Oh girls just want to have fun

Some boys take a beautiful girl
And hide her away from the rest of the world

I want to be the one to walk in the sun
Oh girls they want to have fun
Oh girls just want to have

That's all they really want
Some fun
When the working day is done

Girls - they want to have fun
Oh girls just want to have fun,

They want to have fun,
They want to have fun....

Daydream Believer

Wednesday, April 27, 2011

Walking the pups in winds more than 30 mph with gusts to 50 or more. Yikes! Humming Daydream Believer in the freezing wind - made good time on the walk!

Another Monkee's hit from 1967, written by John Stewart (of the Kingston Trio)

Oh, I could hide 'neath the wings
Of the bluebird as she sings.

The six o'clock alarm would never ring.
But it rings and I rise,

Wipe the sleep out of my eyes.
My shavin' razor's cold and it stings.

Cheer up, Sleepy Jean.
Oh, what can it mean.

To a daydream believer
And a homecoming queen.

You once thought of me
As a white knight on a steed.

Now you know how happy I can be.
Oh, and our good times start and end

Without dollar one to spend.
But how much, baby, do we really need.

Cheer up, Sleepy Jean.
Oh, what can it mean.

To a daydream believer
And a homecoming queen.

Cheer up, Sleepy Jean.
Oh, what can it mean.

To a daydream believer
And a homecoming queen.

[Instrumental interlude]

Cheer up, Sleepy Jean.
Oh, what can it mean.

To a daydream believer
And a homecoming queen.

I'm a Believer

Tuesday, April 26, 2011

I heard this while I was walking the pups tonight - of course, I sang along!

Written by Neil Diamond and recorded by The Monkees in 1966

I thought love was only true in fairy tales
Meant for someone else but not for me.

Love was out to get me
That's the way it seemed.
Disappointment haunted all my dreams.

Then I saw her face, now I'm a believer
Not a trace of doubt in my mind.

I'm in love, I'm a believer!
I couldn't leave her if I tried.

I thought love was more or less a given thing,
Seems the more I gave the less I got.

What's the use in tryin'?
All you get is pain.
When I needed sunshine I got rain.

Then I saw her face, now I'm a believer
Not a trace of doubt in my mind.

I'm in love, I'm a believer!
I couldn't leave her if I tried

  mmm facebook...

Great comparison...
Great song... getting old means I can sing to the oldies...
This new head banging music... wonder if this generation will be able to sing along in the twilight years??
Look a tad suspect grannies thumping feet & heads instead of toe tapping...
Thanks for the memory lane trip...
