Wonderful Sleep

Thursday, July 22, 2010

Since we were relatively overstaffed last night, the others let me leave about 0400. (By the time I'd finished up the last minute stuff, it was almost 0430, but close enough). Got home, washed my face off and brushed my teeth, took my meds, fed the critters ... by 0530, I'd covered the bird cage and was in bed. (Poor birds, I had to switch their days and nights so I can sleep in the daytime - I left the light on last night and the radio playing for them) Sleep -yeah!! Woke up at 09 to potty the pups again, and checked to be sure the switches I'd proposed on the schedule worked out - yep, I'd sucessfully switched tonight from a long (12 hr) to a short (8 hr). Going in just before midnight tonight.

Got up this evening and walked the pups an hour around the neighborhood. Very dark clouds gathering, but no rain predicted yet. We need it. Maybe I should wash my car? If I had an outside clothes line, I'd hang the sheets out - all the usual "I finally did (this) and it rained".

Yesterday, I had no particular worry - just that I wasn't sleeping. Found some quotes about it from Quote Garden: Insomnia is a gross feeder. It will nourish itself on any kind of thinking, including thinking about not thinking. ~Clifton Fadiman
The worst thing in the world is to try to sleep and not to. ~F. Scott Fitzgerald
Nothing cures insomnia like the realization that it's time to get up. ~Author Unknown

I'm glad I didn't work the night shift, it is so hard to block the light during the day and then there are telephone calls and people knocking on the door or ringing the bell what a pain in the ***

Plethora or Dearth

Thursday, July 22, 2010

Or, Feast or Famine, as the case may be. We've been short-staffed due to injuries, and I was sick last week for a couple of nights. This week, TPTB have assigned 2 RNs from other areas to us. Came into work tonight, and we had 6 (six!) RNs, 3 techs, 1 NA, and a clerk. Shoot - I couldn't sleep well this afternoon - I actually thought about calling for 4 hours so I could try to sleep. Another of the RNs went home this evening, and I'm the float nurse.

Got up at 0330 (3:30A) and wandered around the house. Got to the gym @ 0700 - done by a little after 0800. Got all my weekly tasks caught up - dishes done, uniforms set up, salads made for work. Whee! Bed by noon. Lay there, not sleeping. I'd covered the bird cage and told them "good night" - they decided to make a few chirps, but I could ignore that. Startred reading when I wasn't sleepy - got up at 1400 (2p) and played on line briefly. Laid back down, put on the sleep mask, had the rainstorm CD and white noise machine playing. Tried progressive muscle relaxation. Slow breathing. Sigh. Not sure if I got any sleep - seemed like time passed, but I couldn't turn off my brain chatter.

Insread of pumping iron, I'll be pumping coffee.

That's a drag not being able to sleep. I feel for ya. I have been having issues I think because of the heat and humidity. My swamp cooler and fans are just not helping - I will be so glad for some cooler weather. Hang in there!

Today in History

Tuesday, July 20, 2010

20 July 1969 - Neil Armstrong walked on the moon.

I did 4 miles on the treadmill. Not as good as a moonwalk, but I didn't have to leave Earth to do it. Walked the pups 1.5 miles, earlier, before it got hot.

93 years ago, Nathan's Hotdogs began a hotdog eating contest. The winner that year ate 13 hotdogs in 12 minutes. Last year's winner ate 68, including buns, in 12 minutes. At 297 calories per dog, that made 20,196 calories in 12 minutes. Makes me feel like the Ben & Jerry's I ate today wasn't so bad.

Thanks for the reminder of the wonderful history we've lived through. I graduated from high school in 1969. It was an amazing year! Plus Neil Armstrong is an Ohio boy.
20,196 calories! I can't imagine. Perspective is everything! And I love Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream--just don't have much of it anymore. Maybe it's time to clean that little container out of the bottom of my freezer . . . or maybe not. Moderation in all things.

I blogged a couple of times about the stray (feral?) parakeet that's been hanging around my yard. He's still there - I have "conversations" with him nearly evey day (I whistle and talk to him; he chirps and chuckles back). I've been making sure there's feed out, and changing the water in the water bowl daily. I've read on line about feral colonies of budgies and other parakeets in San Francisco, Florida, and CHICAGO (!!) I guess if they can make it in Chicago, they can survive the winter here, too. The birds come from Australia originally, so he should be able to tolerate the heat now.

Anyway - I felt really bad when I bought a yellow parakeet, and left him out where the cats could knock over the cage (I thought he was safe), and he was killed the first day. I waited a week, and got a blue budgie. I put the cage on top of my chest of drawers in the bedroom - and it's now off-limits to the cats. Yeah, they cry and scratch at the door jamb, but they're learning that I won't open the door. The dogs can't get up to the cage, so the bird is safe. This week, I got him (her?) a companion - a green budgie. They stick together in the cage.

They like to share the swing - even tho there's lots of perches and space.

The blue one is Sierra. The green one is Sunny. I call the wild one Sebastion. I know I've seen pictures of birds co-existing with other pets, but maybe they have to start really young. I have trained killers. Maybe this would work:

My sister had a bird when I was a kid. They are pretty but I am not much of a bird lover as in pets. I found out a few years ago that I am allergic to only a few things (1) bird feathers (2) bird droppings (3) birds. No wonder I didn't like being around my sisters bird, always felt weird and bad when I was around it. I have asthma and the only you can not get away from in the air we all breath is feathers and droppings.
You should maybe listen to LilPat and her idea on catching the wild bird and that would make 3. emoticon

I have a parakeet named Bud. Have had him for 10 years. He was a "stray" that wandered into my brother's yard in a rainstorm in winter in Oregon. My brother "gave" him to me as a Christmas present as their cats found Bud too interesting.

He's alone, but not unhappy. He sings and makes noises whenever I am on the phone, loves listening and singing along to music I play.....

I've heard they can live up to 20 years. I think he was a youngun when I got him...

Might try putting your birds outside and an empty cage with food and water beside theirs...might end up with three birds.

We're Having a Heat Wave

Sunday, July 18, 2010

When I was watching the early morning news, I saw the weather dudes were predicting about 100 today. It was 0630, and 75 already. I immediately harnessed up the pups, and we took a nice long walk before it got too hot. We made it down to the dog park, and I let them loose for a little bit. Got home before we melted. Even "Princess" Shalako kept up without complaint.

Newsfolks said someone in Phoenix, AZ burned his feet walking barefoot across the hot asphalt. One of the local newscasters grew up in Phoenix, and said he remembered someone parking their bike with the kickstand down in the morning. By the afternoon, the bike was on its side, with the kickstand sunk into the asphalt. Too hot for this kid!

I'm watching the evening news now, and they're saying much of the US is having a major heatwave, and it'll only get hotter. Ay-yi-yi! Be careful out there, my friends - stay hydrated and as cool as you can.

Actually it has not been bad today or yesterday in Silver City. Lots of overcast with thunder and lightening but nothing to go with it, like a little rain. But it has kept it a little cooler.

Well, if it's any help, you aren't the only ones. We're going to have temps well into the 90s with rain that will only increase the already stifling humidity--but *not* lower the temperatures!--for at least the next seven days. Something about a massive stationary cold front that's not letting anything else get through. There is no global warming . . . there is no global warming . . . there is no global warming . . .
