Lion and Gazelle

Sunday, July 23, 2006

“Every morning in Africa, a Gazelle wakes up. It knows it must run faster than the fastest lion or it will be killed. Every morning a Lion wakes up. It knows it must outrun the slowest Gazelle or it will starve to death. It doesn't matter whether you are a Lion or a Gazelle... when the sun comes up, you'd better be running.”

Crack Pot

Saturday, July 22, 2006

An elderly Chinese woman had two pot’s each hung on the
ends of a pole, which she carried across her neck.
One of the pots had a crack in it while the other pot was
perfect and always delivered a full portion of water. At the end of
the long walk from the stream to the house, the cracked pot arrived
only half full.
For a full two years this went on daily, with the woman
bringing home only one and a half pots of water.
Of course, the perfect pot was proud of its accomplishments.
But the poor cracked pot was ashamed of its own imperfection, and
miserable that it could only do half of what it had been made to
do. After 2 years of what it perceived to be bitter failure, it
spoke to the woman one day by the stream. "I am ashamed of myself,
because this crack in my side causes water to leak out all the way
back to your house."

The old woman smiled, "Did you notice that there are flowers
on your side of the path, but not on the other pot's side?" "That's
because I have always known about your flaw, so I planted flower
seeds on your side of the path, and every day while we walk back,
you water them."

"For two years I have been able to pick these beautiful
flowers to decorate the table. Without you being just the way you
are, there would not be this beauty to grace the house."
Each of us has our own unique flaw. But it's the cracks and
flaws we each have that make our lives together so very interesting
and rewarding.

You've just got to take each person for what they are and look
for the good in them.

Doing a little

No one could make a greater mistake than he who did nothing because he could do only a little. -Edmund Burke

Patience is the key to paradise.

- Turkish proverb

Poise in the face of frustration

Whether waiting to see a change on the scale, dealing with your coworkers, or diligently putting in work and feeling unappreciated, losing your patience is very easy to do. By exercising patience with all people, you are allowing them to become better and to learn on their own through gentle guidance. One healthy byproduct of self control in the face of frustration is that it usually leads to encouragement and enhancement of your relationships. Happy families and friendships thrive on patience and learning. It may take time to learn, but the results are well worth it!

Shutterbug Assignment formatL

Monday, July 10, 2006

I thought it might be a good time to update where we are on the Shutterbug assignments. This has been such a great experience. It grew out of a conversation I had with Pam (pamala3) back in June. The idea is that each week we have a photography assignment. The assignment would be made by someone chosen by the previous weeks leader. My vision was that having a particular assignment would force us to get out and shoot pictures. There is nothing liking taking pictures to make us better photographers. The more we shoot, the better we get, it is as simple as that. The other part of that, of course, is having people comment on what we have done. Constructive critiques even. (If you want to see some good critiquing, you can check out
So, here is how it works. Each Saturday a new assignment is given by that weeks leader. The assignment can by anything your creative mind can come up with to challenge us and make us think about the world around us and come up with our best images. At the same time the leader gives the assignment, he/she also names who will give the assignment for the following week. Here is what we have done so far

Week 1 Wildlife Laurie (boyzx34me)
Week 2 Clouds Pam (pamala3)
Week 3 Collage Lena (craftygirl3)
Week 4 Architecture Chuck (chuckabbe)
Week 5 Water Shawna (1kayakgirl)
Week 6 Where We Live Chris (moorey) 7-9-06 to 7-15
Week 7 Patterns in Nature Denny (dennisbishop)
Week 8 TBD, Carlotta (carludda)
