This permanent life style change was to be slow.... very slow... on purpose. I know very well how to lose pounds, fast and sure, only to regain them because diets, by definition are based upon short term goals with activities ending once the goal has been reached. So, with the recommendation of my doctor, this lifestyle change was to be permanent and become a repeatable habit rather than short term behavior modification. Simple and sure. It started last May, 2013 with a mid term check up in October. Two items to watch. 1 - reduce caloric consumption by 200 calories per day (less than 10% of my total at the time) with the result of 6,000 calories less per month. 2 - Be active every day for at least 30 min. I added a 30 min walk to each day... or an equivalent exercise (golf - biking - swimming, etc.) These two items were to result in a weight loss of about 2.5 to 3 lbs per month..... the overall objective was to see a 30 lb improvement over one year... and better overall physical condition due to exercise. My six month check up is next week. Currently I am on pace and feel real good about the results my doctor will see. I started at 248 lbs in May and my current weight is 233.5 lbs. Exactly on track. After one year, we will revisit my health and set up plans for further improvement. The secret to success for me has been patience, making slow, deliberate, permanent changes and monitoring results once a month rather than stepping on a scale every day or week (as some I know do). This is working, this is my life for the rest of my life.
