Today, I am one year older & 57 lbs. smaller. What a difference a year makes ....

Saturday, July 28, 2012

Well, today I turned 56 years old! I can't believe it, the older I get, the faster time flies by.

Last birthday, I weighed 226 lbs., and at the end of last year, I still weighed 226 lbs.
Then I joined Weight Watchers 10 minutes before registration was due to close.

A coworker to my desk and told me she had just signed up, that the meetings were held at our office once weekly during lunch break, and bonus .... my employer was offering to flip the cost. How could I go wrong!? So, I joined having previously had no thoughts about dieting or worrying about the way I ate and how little I exercised. Hey, I had no health issues, so why worry?

After the 12 meetings the program ended and I had lost 12% of my weight and as well
as getting compliments, I felt my clothes start to become less ‘fitting’ (yeah, you're right,
less tight !!)

It was just the push I needed, there is now no looking back. I found this website by fluke,
and it has been a huge help combined with what I had learned on Weight Watchers.

It has been 6 months to the day since my life changed and I attended my first meeting.
I now weigh 169 lbs., have a new wardrobe, at least of summer clothes .... I live in Alberta, Canada, so the bigger spend will come for the winter, but for once I am looking forward to shopping for new clothes. I cannot believe it, but even my shoes are less tight! I had some pairs that were hurting my feet and now I can wear them again which is great because some of them I had hardly ever worn before as they were not comfortable.

I wish to thank this website and the friends I have made here for the encouragement and for pushing me along, I have needed a kick in the butt a few times, and my Spark friends have always been there for me!

I have motivation, I have energy, I feel better and I have been told I look much better and healthier .... who knew?? I have a much better attitude about everything, even my house is cleaner than ever, I’m not too tired to say "I can't be bothered" anymore!

Gee, at this rate, I can hardly wait until I write my blog for my next birthday. Stay tuned for better news then!

emoticon time ..... emoticon oh, oh, oh ..... BONUS: I just noticed I went from Level 10 up to Level 11 today too! emoticon

    Congratulations and Happy B'day!

Your company sounds like a great one - that they care about the health of their employees and
put things in place to help them achieve success.

Sometimes we just need that little push to get us going - get us to get serious about gettng healthy.

The one good thing about clothes shopping now sizes are easier to find - clothing not as expensive as it was as you no longer have to go to specialty stores.

Well, only one more birthday meal out (I hope)

Thursday, July 26, 2012

OK, so on Tuesday night my two daughters took me out for my upcoming birthday (the 28th) and I had no idea where we were going until we got there, and they parked outside an pizza place. Thinking they would have something other than pizza since I would be restricted to only one piece of pizza, I said nothing, not wanting them to feel bad since they were nice enough to take me out. Well, it was pizza or pizza dough stuffed with the same stuff they would put on top of a pizza! I had a salad, BORING but ok to eat. Don't get me wrong, I very much appreciated the jesture, they are great girls and treat me like a queen .... well, most times LOL

Yesterday, I met a friend for lunch and we went to a Vietnamese restaurant that I love, in fact it is one of my favorite restaurants, so that was great. I had a noodle dish, leaving the noodles, eating all the veggies and prawns. It was wonderful, but boy did I want to eat those damned noodles!

Now, I just got an email that my best friend (the smaller one in my profile photo) is coming to town next week for my birthday, she lives in Vancouver, about 1200 miles away from me. She is staying at my house, and the first thing she wants to do is take me out to supper for my birthday .... I hate to say no, so I won't. This time, darn it, I just might go for the gusto and have something completely decedent and might even have a small piece of cake since I know from experience she will get for me on the sly if I decline, so I may as well.

Hey, I've behaved, she is coming from a long way to see me, so I'm giving in. If you guys would give me the permission and the go ahead I will feel much better about it though! Thanks in advance!!

emoticon ......... emoticon ....... oh well emoticon

Go for it. It is only 1 meal - and then get back on track.

I think today is the 28th - it is here in Oz - so emoticon

Your birthday only comes once a year. An occasional splurge or two won't set you back that far! And knowing ahead you can eat a little lightly before as well. Just get back on track the next day (that is sometimes hard for me!) And enjoy your dinner!

Just wanted to point out ....

Wednesday, July 25, 2012

In reference to the article (Blog) named "Poll: Do Front-Yard Vegetable Gardens Offend You? " on today's home page something that as a Canadian may not be known.

The area between the road and the city sidewalk (such as where the garden is situated in this featured article) is land that belongs to the city and as such it is not the home owner's right to plant what they wish to. Although I don't personally see any issue with it worth the time taken by the city to deal with it, it is not their land and they are not legally entitled to plant anything there.

In most circumstances, the city plants and maintains any trees planted in this area although the maintenance of the grass is the responsibility of the home owner/resident.

Just wanted to straighten this out for the persons who have read this piece as the entire story was not actually told.

We are the same here - it is called the 'nature strip' and the council usually plants some trees.

After quite a lot of years of drought here, I believe we can apply to the council and they will help with setting up a garden - but there are requirements - like a pathway for the public to walk on. I have a friend who has been looking into this - but not sure how far she has gone with it. There are 2 positives - less watering (water wise plants are planted) and it cuts down on mowing the grass on this strip. LOL

I see front yard gardens from time to time... and the ones that are obvious are unattractive.
But there are herb gardens that would be wonderful even in a front yard.
And the Kraft Pavilion at Disney World in Orlando FLorida, plant ornamental foodstuffs in its entrance way.

The photo of the ACTUAL garden (not the one used for the article, but the one linked in the news report) shows that the garden stops before the sidewalk. But there is only a smidge of grass between the sidewalk and the road... perhaps that varies from area to area in Canada?

Looking forward to birthday dinner out (EEKS) or am I?

Tuesday, July 24, 2012

My daughters are taking me out for a surprise birthday dinner tonight. It was a surprise until I said about what we could have for supper today, and one of them opened their mouths and told me! My actual birthday is not until Saturday, the 28th, however my younger daughter is leaving on vacation right away, so it has been moved up to today.

Just a bit nervous about where we will go and what I can order that will be a healthy choice. They like steak houses, and I love steak ...... I hate to go to a nice steak house and have to order chicken!

I'll update tomorrow, hopefully with a health update, not a 'fat' update (fatty food that is.) Why is it nowhere sells a steak that is only 3 or 4 oz. serving?? !! (and I cannot stand reheated leftover steak, so that doesn't work so well either)

Enjoy your dinner - once in a while to enjoy yourself won't hurt. I would be more concerned about the sides than the steak. Order healthy sides if you can't order a small enough steak. Happy Early Birthday!

Enjoy your meal out - don't stress too much about it. It is not as though you eat out every day.

A group of my friends and I go out for dinner once a month, and I basically have a meal that I like. I am losing weight - maybe I could lose it a bit more quickly - but I need to have a life.

Also, every Thursday, after the WW meeting, my friend and I go somewhere for lunch. Usually it is a wrap or something healthy, but sometimes not. Enjoy your time with your family and your birthday on the 28th!
