Do all old people sleep so much?! suggestions how to entertain them please?!

Friday, August 17, 2012

My parents safely arrived yesterday afternoon which is great.
They are both in their 80's and very active, fit persons with no current health concerns. When I go stay with them, they are go, go, go, but when they come here they sleep, sleep, sleep.
Each time I have come into the living room today, they are asleep on the couch! I am hoping it is just the long drive here (1200 miles driven in 2 days) but worry about them perhaps being just bored.
Any suggestions on how to entertain older persons on a limited budget would be appreciated?

I am with you. Traveling can take A LOT out of you. Wait and see what tomorrow will bring. Yes, boredom can be it too. What do they do when you go to them? Can you do the same where you are?

I am not in your parents' age group and I am also a fit and active person lol but I have always needed more naps than other people, it seems, and that is increasing a little as I age. They probably were just pooped from the drive. Maybe you could just ask them what they want to do. I kind of think as Towhee does that possibly they'd rather just hang out with you for the most part, maybe just relax? Have a good time with your parents. Love your blog background picture.

My parents are just a few years younger than yours and they always need a rest after their drive here too. They usually bounce back after a day or so. I don't know what your parents like to do but I have a list for when mine come of things to choose from - art museums, historical museums, walk in a scenic area, etc. If your city has a tourism website or webpage you might get some ideas there. (I picked up a bunch of brochures at the interstate rest area nearest my home too!)

I am not as old as your parents (just 71) and such long drive in two days would knock the starch right out of me. Let them recover for a while and then give them a good home made energy drink. Hope it helps.

If not, how about asking them how they are feeling and what they would like to do during the day.

P.S. You sound like a wonderful daughter Hmm, wonder if you learned that from your parents.

I would give them a couple of days to recuperate from their long drive; 1200 miles in 2 days is a very strenuous trip for anyone of any age.

What do they do when they are home? Can you do the same or similar things in your area? Are there museums that you can go to? Many have a discounted senior rate. What about a drive in area or to some tourist locations. I know you asked for low budget ideas, but some tourist places are reasonable in price and have senior rates that can be 25% to 50% of the normal rates. Are there elderly neighbors near you? Maybe you can invite them in for a card game or an afternoon party. Is there a Senior Center in your community? If so, they may have some drop-in activities that your parents would enjoy.

Since they are your parents, they came to visit with YOU. Make sure you have plenty of time for them. Sit and talk, ask advice, follow their lead. When my parents were alive they would take me shopping to get new towels or a do-dad for the house. Mom and I would do some canning or baking. Dad and my DH would take care of fix-it projects that never seem to get done.

Good luck.

Like the song says, "take a look at me now"

Thursday, August 16, 2012

Well, today is the day, my parents are coming today, HOORAY !

I haven't seen them since last Christmas, when I weighed 226 lbs., and wait till they see me now. I am down to 162 lbs!

They will be so surprised and even more proud of me than they were before.

I can't wait, I am so looking forward to spending some time with them, even though I have been complaining about how much work they are (they are in their 80's).

It is time to now slow down and enjoy them while we still have them. My mother is BIG on health, eating right and exercising, so I think she will live forever. She is up at 5:00 every morning to go to the gym for 3 hours! My dad is a big marshmallow (I do not mean fat, LOL) ... he is a big softie with a huge heart that has let him down once and he had to have surgery, so I do worry about him, but he has started since that time to visit with the gym each morning as well.

I gotta go, I am busy still getting ready, but my be absent or only posting shorties while they are here. I AM SO EXCITED !!!!!!!

Yay! Its so awesome that you have that great example. A lot of times, the reason why we are who we are is because of our parents. I think about this with my daughter and hope that by me getting into shape I will be setting a good example for her in the future.

Good for you. . .that you've lost the weight and that you'll have this opportunity to spend time with your parents - and show them how you've grown. . NOT!!! 8-)

Wow, what a lot of work ....

Wednesday, August 15, 2012

As most of my friends on here know, I will be 'entertaining' my parents starting tomorrow for about 8 days (by entertaining I mean feeding, cleaning up after, and just generally waiting on them! LOL)

So, house MUST be spic and span and yard is to look immaculate, WHEW, am I exhausted today!

With all I am doing, I won't need to exercise! I was up at 6 am, started while babysitting my grand-daughter who thankfully has been amusing herself for the most part.

Seems however, the more I do the more needs doing as I am continually finding things that haven't been done for a while. We have 2 dogs and a cat, and I never realized how dirty they make the walls in my house, so I spent 2 hours washing down walls and baseboards on top of everything else I have been doing and will be doing today.

And on top of it all, my Dr. called to see me today! (notthing to worry over he said)

I was hoping to go get my winning goods mentioned in my prior blog, but now I know I will not have the time ..............

Oh, well, there is always tomorrow I guess, they won't be here until the afternoon and I have already cooked tomorrow's dinner ready. I certainly will sleep well tonight!!

Cleaning is good exercise, isn't it? I love having family come to visit, but I am often exhausted when they leave. My son was visiting recently and I had to run the dishwasher twice a day and didn't have a crumb left in the house when he was gone!

I never enter contests, but this time I had a funny feeling, and I WON !!

Tuesday, August 14, 2012

I can't believe this, first I never watch television during the day time, but had the morning show on this morning to catch up on a news story from yesterday I had been interested in.

During the show, they had an interview with the owner of a very exclusive shoe store in the city.

She said to email and they were giving away a gift certificate for a pair of shoes, a purse or a piece of jewellery of the winner's choice.

For some reason, and I never enter contests, I was on the computer anyway, so thought what the hell .... and well, I won!!

A few hours later, I received an email from the TV station advising of my prize.

So, guess where I am going tomorrow ?? !!

Funny thing is I had a feeling I would win ...... call me a newcomer to contests from here forward!

I'm gonna buy a lottery ticket while my luck is good!! ....... WISH ME LUCK
