Ovo-Lacto Vegetarian

Monday, August 05, 2013

I am seeing if I can do an ovo-lacto vegetarian diet, but I love my meat. I feel it will be hard to give up chicken. I can do without beef. I eat it, but not as often as chicken. A lot of people around me are turning to the vegetarian life style. I see them quite often, so, why not join 'em! I'm trying out a sparkpeople recipe tonight for dinner. Cheesy spinach enchiladas. I love, love, loveee chicken enchiladas, so this is a definite awesome dinner(minus the chicken, of course!). I am thinking about adding some bell peppers to it. I love bell peppers. Hey, maybe this ovo-lacto vegetarian diet won't be so bad after all. emoticon

  Thanks, Gabi!

The recipe turned out great! I added some green bell peppers and garlic to it.. So tasty!! I did have to heat the corn tortillas up before I could easily roll them. I followed the recipe at first for those, but realized they'd be better warm and more pliable. If you don't heat them up first, they unroll and/or crack and fall apart. That's the only downside of corn tortillas. Other than that, they're delicious! emoticon

Flaxseeds, quinoa, and lemon water

Friday, August 02, 2013

So lately, I have been reading a lot about the health benefits of flaxseeds, quinoa, and lemon water. I am completely surprised with what I found! I'm sharing three links so you can read about all three.

Today I bought some flaxseeds at Wegmans. I have an herb grinder, so I'll be grinding some up later tonight. I have been looking up some recipes for them and can't wait to incorporate them into my diet.

I've had quinoa before; I had no clue I was eating it. My boyfriend's brother brought a tasty dish over one Sunday and it had quinoa and all sorts of fresh veggies. It was a cold dish and if I find out what exactly was in it, I'll blog that as well!

As for lemon water, well, I've been drinking that for some time now. I love plain water, so it took a while to get used to the lemon flavor. I do love it now, though. I have a juicer, so I have been juicing about five lemons a week and that usually lasts me. I store the lemon juice in the fridge till I'm ready or I'll fill up a pitcher of lemon water for the week. It's so tasty!

    Hi DeeDee!

I'm glad you are reading up on healthy foods! I love flaxseeds. I use them in my morning Oat bran hot cereal and also in fat-free Greed Yogurt. I really like quinoa and there are so many recipes for that! Lemon water is great for you. Absolutely the best 1st thing in the morning in warm water before you eat anything else. You could also juice the lemons and put them in an ice cube tray and freeze it for whenever you want to drink the lemon water. Then all you have to do is pop it out! Real easy.

I hope you are having a great weekend!!!

Use flax regularly in my fruit shakes and whole grain muffins. I like quinoa hot. Don't use lemons, prefer water plain. Something to think about!
Thanks for the links!

Weekends are so difficult!

Monday, July 15, 2013

I did awful this weekend with eating better. I didn't exercise or eat healthy foods at all. I hadn't seen my family in a while and they wanted to have a cookout with my boyfriend and me. My mom made a ton of food-bbq chicken, corn on the cob, salt potatoes, baked potatoes, mac salad, potato salad. I had everything and felt horrible after. I couldn't help myself. I just kept eating..and eating.....and eating!! There was no will power this weekend. I am so bloated from all of the salt I had and very disappointed in myself as well. I feel like I "slip" almost every weekend and have something that is bad for me, but I overindulged this weekend and feel horrible now. I was doing great and I can't wait to get back on track today with eating better and exercising! Just thought I would share. I know everyone has a bad day of eating. I just need to find will power when I am around so much food and family!

Thanks, Gabi! I just know for next time not to eat so much! I did not like the way I felt and do not want to feel that way again. That's how I used to eat, so it's an eye opener as to why I always felt bloated. I started eating better and it had been three weeks. My body wasn't used to all of the foods I used to eat. I feel too good to wreck this with bad eating now! emoticon

    Hi DeeDee,

Special occasions happen to all of us and in order to Live your new lifestyle, you have to take these into consideration and allow yourself to have fun or else you start feeling deprived and just feel like quitting. But your body, by being so bloated, is telling you that what you ate or the amount you ate did not agree with it. Try to remember that feeling the next time you are in that or a similar situation. It might keep you on track a little more. Instead of being disappointed, think about what you have learned and use that for the future. Everyone goes through the same thing, you are certainly not alone!

The important thing to remember is that each day is a new day and we can start with a clean slate! Have a great week!!

Just don't decide to quit! Back on track today. We all make mistakes. Family and celebrations are fun and wholesome. One weekend won't wreck your good work. Just keep working. You'll be surprised how you will feel if you keep going

I totally blew the weekend. Sigh-- and I've paid the price. It set me back on the hard-earned progress I'd made during the week. My theme this Monday is taken from Dora (Finding Nemo) to just keep swimming. Big breath and here I go.

Sometimes we take two steps forward and one step back. This is not a lack of progress, it's called the cha-cha. Maintaining a healthy relationship with your family is an important aspect of a balanced life.

Feeling and doing great, even with distractions!

Wednesday, July 10, 2013

This is the first time in my life that I have committed to a healthy lifestyle and exercising habits, and have stuck to it. I have been feeling great lately! It has been tough, though; I work at Wetzel's Pretzels. It has been two weeks since I made a promise to myself and my co-workers that I would not touch another pretzel ever again. They have been very supportive(although, most of the girls are on diets, so it's easy for them to tell me no).
When I would come into work, I would go straight for the pretzel case and grab a full bag of pretzel bitz(which is a pretzel and a half, mind you). After that, and two cheddar cheese cups later, I would make myself a huge cheese meltdown pretzel. I would then demolish that with a cup of pizza sauce and a cup of cheddar cheese sauce. When I was finally done eating all of that, I would feel so bloated and disgusting. I would have to finish the rest of my eight-hour shift feeling full and tired. It was turning in to an almost every day thing(I work five days there). If I knew I didn't have to work the next day, I would bring home pretzels to have on my days off. It sounds crazy and it was! Who obsesses over pretzels that much? I even got my boyfriend into the habit of eating pretzels all the time. He has asked me almost every night I've worked in the past two weeks for a pretzel and I keep telling him no! I've brought him home one, just one time. Not another one since. I'd rather not see him eating one of my favorite foods in front of me, ya know?
I can't wait to keep updating you all on my progress. I am very excited!

Thanks, Quootie! Very true-I need to leave this place! I'm only part time there, and the bosses are owners of many subways and the pretzel place. They are moving me to a subway soon! Healthier food! Their salads are so good, too! emoticon

DeeDee, I don't know what the employment situation is like where you are, but you need to get out of a pretzel shop lol.
Sounds like you are making great progress. I wish you the greatest success. Every little victory will give you alittle more of the self confidence you are looking for. Go full speed ahead

  Thank you, 87Berkebile. emoticon

Gabi-Thank you for your comments. It's definitely nice knowing people care and always have some sort of positive words of encouragement. I know exactly what you mean. I don't think I could do just a 1/2 cup of ice cream! But my one food I've given up entirely will have to be the pretzels. I don't know if I'll ever be able to eat them again! It's been so nice not eating them. Last night I had an awful craving for a regular pretzel and cheddar cheese. I just made myself a salad and munched on some veggies instead. I felt proud of myself!! As for my name, I get called Deedee, or just Dee! All are yours up for the grab! emoticon

Way to go Danielle (or do you prefer DeeDee?)!!! I know that getting to the weight I feel is healthiest for me is all about a change in lifestyle and technically there are NO forbidden foods, but I also know which foods are trigger foods for me so while I am on this phase of my journey I am avoiding those foods. For instance I love ice cream and know that I can't stop at the 1 serving size - 1/2 cup, so I would rather not have it at all. Once I get to my desired healthy weight, I will then add any food that I found to be a trigger food back into my diet and observe both my mind's response and my body's response and determine from there whether I want to eliminate it from my diet permanently.

Looking forward to hearing about your progress!

Gabi
