Burned out & Burned

We woke and left this morning about 5 am and went out to do our monthly shopping at Winco in Portland. (about 30 minutes on the freeway) and got back home before it was day break. We thought we'd beat the crowds there but oh my gosh. They were stocking shelves and we could not get a cart down the ailses. I had to wait at the end of each aile. We came home put things away and i had a short nap then we head out to do more shopping for the kids. We're celebrating Christmas with roberts 2 adult kids tomorrow. I had (get this) 3 naps today. It's not like me sleeping during the day time. I normally have the alrgest amount of energy. I feel fine jsut tired. No, I'm not eating any chocolate and bad stuff to bring me down. I'm just pooped.

I bought myself a stability ball so I can work on this upcoming new You bootcamp. i have hand weights here a t home. now I be ballin in my own home! How about that.

We're having Chinook (Salmon steak. and a sweet potato for myself and regular potatoe for Robert. We don't like the same things. I'm having fish he's having steak. I went to put the foil wrapped potatoes in the preheated oven and burned my hand on the top from the riack . Owwwww singed the skin right off. It is a burning. So 3 times today i got burned. LOL

Great news though. This morning right out of bed testing my blood sugar it was 107. How aobut that. I find that what works best for me is having a night time snack of aobut 15 almonds and a piece of fruit in the evenings. I'm always learning something new.

    Yowee, sorry 'bout your hand!!! I'm doing the bootcamp, too.....along with starting a new weight training program that lasts 12 weeks. UGH. Hope this doesn't turn into a total burnout month, guess we'll see. Glad things have settled down for you, tho. We're also doing our gifty thing tomorrow with my kids, my daughter and family were in Florida over Christmas so we decided to wait til she was home and had a chance to breathe before doing our thing......I'll just be glad when it's over, not overdoing it this year, for once. Here's to a good month for everyone in the bootcamp, hopefully we'll all be much slimmer by February! LOL! And don't have TOO much fun on that ball!

Looking ahead...

This picture shows Vanessa, Roberts daughter on her Dragon boat racing team in Salem, OR last summer. this is something i am trying to make possible for me to try this year as a challenge. We're waiting to hear if we will be accepted on a team.

Yesterday we spent the whole afternoon and evening with our good friends Jerry and donna. They invited us over for lunch. there before us was all kinds of yummy health foods. (well mostly healthy) There was different kinds of thinly sliced meat, whole wheat croissants, stuffed mushrooms, 3 bean salad, pickles and other good stuff. I did ahve half servings of dessert. Dainty candies that were so rich i can still taste them today. Donna gave me some Diabetic oatmeal cookies her friend gave her but i believe she didn't care for them and I ahd 2 last night before bed and my Fasting blood sugar was 121!!! A good number for me. I'm asking for the resipe. i don't taste anything sweet in them.

We're celebrating hristmas eve on Sunday with Roberts kids. So we were out shopping today. I bought something for myself. A large bucket of Almonds. Almonds is my food of choice to add in aotmeal and my salads instead of croutons it's the protien and nitrients i go form See wht I've learned from my friends on SP?

I'm not doing new years Resolutions but I have 3 major goals:

1. reduce my artificial sweetener intake.
2. Cardio exercise at least 30 minutes at least 5 days a week.
3. water, water, water... at least 8 8 oz. cups but most days i go over but some days i go lower.

I'm motivated to get my big butt moving and hope all of you are getting motivated too. I'm not doing impossible goals cuz they can just be broken they need to be ones I can keep.

After all the snow melted and I finally had the OPTION to leave my home rather than stay in We ahd a new blanket of 2" of snow that fell during the night and this morning. It was pretty. It has stayed. It is not hard to drive it. But it was nice enough to make Oregon look Postcard perfect on our outiing today.

if everyone in the word wished PEACE to all and spread PEACE what a wonderful world this would be.

    It sounds like a nice visit with friends! It is so nice that your friends are encouraging you. I have heard so many people say that their friends sabotage them, so it is nice to hear that there are good friends out there!

    Sounds like you had a wonderful time.
Question: why are you trying to stop using artificial sweetners? I know for me, it causes me problems if I use it too often. I mainly only use it in my tea (both hot or cold) and my diet sodas. I know they say artificial sweetners can cause mood swings. Maybe that's contributing to my mood swings.

    What a beautiful picture. I hope you can get on a team - it sounds fun and challenging. I love you goals because they are reasonable and should be fairly easy to keep. But knowing you, I believe you will accomplish anything you set your mind too.

    My brother lives in Portland and he just can't get over the snow they've had out there this year. He said in 30 years of living out there,he's never seen weather like they're having now! I told him our weather has gotten reversed, somehow or other....you guys are getting ours! LOL! Kudos on you for your goals, sounds really good to me. Is this gonna be a good year or what?? Sue came over this morning from Portland and we visiited a while here at my home. She is Gollesue on Sparks people. She is such a sweetheart. I truly enjoy her company. We are getting to know each other. We drove with Robert coming along too and of course my mr. tuffy to the Clackamas river Trail and we did a nice walk. Darn my blood sugar having to drop on this walk! but activity like that will do it to me. she was so supportive. kept asking if I'm ok. I get to weaving and feel irritable, shaking and kept bumping into her. Sue held me up. When we got home and I sat down Robert pricked my shaking fingers and bs was 60 and dropping so i had 2 peppermint lifesavers and a half an orange and I am all better now. Robert walked as far as Tuffy had to go and then he walked back so it was just Sue and I on our walk. It was cold. I always feel freezing cold when BS is low. We agreed next time it would be after lunch where it's not near time that I take my meds.

thank you Sue, for being there for me and being yourself. I love you for being such a good friend and putting up with me. LOL

Goodbye, 2008

2008 was a special year to me. My niece married her beloved Pilot to be. We Traveled to So. California toa ttend the wedding on a lovely boat on newport Harbor.

It was the year of my fall and my waking up to better health.
I found Spark People as referred to by a friend.
We got our lovely home up here on this hill with a magnificant view.
I was asked and accepted to being leader of Emotional Eaters.
(something i do each day of my life with pride and joy)
I learned portion control and the importance of combining protein with carbs.
I began to exercise finally after hating exercise my entire life
Ashley, My loving daughter made a move to oregon from California.
Dennis, my brother continues to recover very slowly in the hospital still from his alst surgery still ahnging on.
I made good, trusting supportive friends in 2008
I met 2 Spark People members in person and we ahve walked together and continue to be friends.
I have ahd my ups and downs but mostly up in my battle with Diabetes.


I leave behind memories that wills tay with me forever I am blessed to ahve been where i am today. I couldn't ahve done 2008 without my Spark friends.

Heck, I think that any year when we decide to finally take control of our eating/health is a great year... especially for us emotional eaters!

You are doing a great thing, Debbie. I don't always post on the EE team board, but you can bet that I am there reading all of the encouragement that it given to others. It really helps. emoticon And anytime I need a chuckle, I look at your profile picture. Anyone who posts a picture of themselves on an exercise ball is ok in my book. emoticon

What works for me...

Diets have always failed me or I have failed while being on them. Meeting the Oregon/Portland to be exact Dietician was the best thing I have ever done. This took Place last March. i have been through 5 Diabetes Education session and it was this one that finally got it to sink in. After month 2 everything went smoothly. this is NO diet. It's my life now. I eat very healthy foods ad no refined sugars. My only real sugars come when I get a low blood sugar spell that can last about 30 minutes. This normally happens about 1 hr. before lunch or 2 Hr.'s after i take my morning meds. It's not terribly low anymore. But it can go between 60-70. I have a couple peppermint candies or now, a candy cane or a mini dark chocolate. These are taken only when I need them. I don't work hard at this plan any more but I do need to work harder on my exercise. I really don't feel I am working on anything. I've increased intake on nuts, beans, veggies and fruits. One of my healthiest meals happen to be chicken or tacos.

Also making variety in my meals has been successful with me. Making them more interesting. For instance who wants a plain ol bowl of oatmeal? Although it is a very healthy breakfast even in the summer time it is bland and boring. I spiced it up and it is now one of my most favorite meals. I add sliced almonds or walnuts, apple sauce or apple bits, seasonal cranberries i slice in half and add some pumpkin pie spice or cinnamon. Yummmmm . Emotional Eaters gave me some delicous examples and I have something different every day. Even a plain lettuce and tomatoe salad i fashion it up with healthy red bell peppers, onions, goat cheese, apple slices or raspberries or strawberries and top with walnuts or almonds.

Vinegarette dressings and asian dressings are what I'm into now for my salads. At my daughters restaurant she suggested my salad and it had goat cheese in it. it was a new experience for me. I liked it. On the way home we bought some. It turns out just a little of the goat cheese ahs 5 grams of protein and no fat and no sugar. i don't normally like this cheese plain but in a salad it is great.

Because of the price of fresh veggies i have begun selecting some good frozen veggies. I whipped up a good egg breakfast instead of just scrambled eggs I added a cup of frozen veggies but first I sautee the veggies in canola oil. Next week I will buy some Olive oil and try that. I am still learning new things but my meals are not boring.

I do not have cookies, cake, ice cream that sort of stuff unless it is like Skilly Cow sugar free.

Note: Anyone wanting to start a healthy lifestyle can benefit from a Diabetics diet. I try to get between 60-100 grams a day of protein. rather than count calories I am counting protein grams.

One of the most filling snacks in evening (2 hours after dinner) consists of 2 things. A carb and a protein. A fruit and some kind of nuts. Usually a small piece of fruit or a half of a large fruit and handful of peanuts. (Healthiest is Almonds. But I go for any kind. the bulk section of the store where you serve yourself with a scoop and a bag is my friend. We have cannisters for different types of nuts. They go in my salads, cereals, eggs, stir fry's you name it. Rather than use croutons on a salad try nuts.

    Debbie yes I have read your blog. I love that you are excited about your eatting snacks and your flavored oatmeal. It means that you are truly enjoying what you are eatting, I get excited about my salads and healthy snacks. I am trully happy with what I am eatting and the choices I make now.     Hi....I will definitely be trying the carb and protein snack after dinner. That sounds very good and very filling. I wish my Mom and boyfriend, who both have diabetes 2, would get as real about managing their diet as you have. You are really doing awesome.     The way you eat sounds a lot like the way I try to eat.

You know, I have been on just about every diet out there. They don't work for me, either. Sure, I lose weight, but as soon as I start to eat normal foods again, it all comes back.

I am going to have to try the Skinny Cow stuff. Sounds good! emoticon

One of my favorite breakfasts is cooked brown rice, sliced apple, a pinch of cinnamon and pinch of sugar or splenda cooked in a tiny bit of butter or canola oil. I toss in a small handful of chopped pecans and a small handful of dried fruit (craisins are my current favorite.) I am getting hungry just thinking about it! emoticon

    My favorite salad 'weapon' is parmesan cheese. Very few calories for a lot of flavor. I'm also learning the new world of spices. Salt & pepper just don't cut it anymore.
