emoticon emoticon emoticon

Ok, I'm thrilled as is Robert and my dear, sweet audie at OHSU. You see I suffer Speech discrimination. I really don't understand how I learned to speak so clearly but I have never understook a spoken word before. Speech discrimination from nerve deafness is what this is called. Everything had an echo and was not clear going through to my brain.

I ahd my 3rd mapping yesterday morning. Setting volumes and tones and getting rid of some of the chirpy sounds I was hearing. (Men no longer sound like donald duck)
My speech comprehension inside and out of the booth is at 57% And I understook all the single words and all the beeps and tones. Sentenses are a mystery though. I can get only 1 or 2 words out fo most longer sentences but got all the smaller ones. Before my CI surgery speech comprehension was a big fat Zero percent. so there is an improvement here and more to come.

Had Dragon boat Practice in the PM.
Bottom line... I'm sore in the muscles. I worked my fanny off!

Have a blessed weekend!

My dear little Oregon duckie--I am so happy for you! It sounds like you are making some real progress with your hearing. I think you were always so remarkable to be able to write so well inspite of being communication-challenged by your deafness. You are really an inspiration to so many people--myself included. Keep up the good work. With your attitude, I think you can progress forever. Hugs!

We ahd a good day

Thursday, May 20, 2010

Early afternoon brought me my Dr. appointment which was my 3 month follow up. i get checked out with blood work every 3 months because i am diabetic. My A1c for blood sugar remains at 6.1 High on the normal side but still normal. We increased my dosage on my glyburide to 5 Mi. twice a day.
Cholesterol and all other tests were at a good normal level.
Weight is up 3 lbs in three months. I'm not doing anything different however i ahve been inactive for a long time. Now I'm back on the boat and working out on the boats paddling twice a week and jsut joined 24 hr. fitness. We're going tos ee how that goes.

Later we went to Old Chicago Pizza to help celebrate Ashley's best friend, Brittney Jo's birthday. She turned all of 21. We bought her one drink called "Grape Knee Highs" It was a fizzy purple drink. she loved it and drank it all and the one before that was a sunset Beach. I had a spaghetti with meatball dinner that was delicous! I ate about 1/4 of the dinner and brought the rest home.
Today, shortly, I head off to OHSU for my 3rd mapping on my Cochlear Implant.

An update for those of you inquiring about my progress...
Last Sunday we went shopping for a swimsuit for me to wear to the gym. I am doing pool jog/walk/ aerobics, etc. Well when we came to the check out and the cashier rang up the total I actually understook the amount exactly. A first time for me.

Later that night Ashley called on the house phone and was talking with Robert and he brought the phone to me. I held it in my hand like "what is this for" LOL He told me to put it to my ear and i flipped out so happy when I understood Ashley say "Hi mom, I love you!" I said "I love you, too!" And OMG I really understood her! I ahve NEVER used the phone.

To date I can get a little bit of what is said. I was instructed not to focus on too much too soon that it all takes time.

It's all good.

Brittney Jo in the yellow and Ashley with the big black belt. Party girls!

Wow, it is so wonderful what you can hear now.

Reading this reminded me of a story my Mom told me. She had lost 80% of her hearing when she was 7 years old to whooping cough. When she was about 18, she got her first hearing aid. Mom said she was walking through the park one day after she got her hearing aid, and heard a terrific noise. She said she looked around and realized she was hearing the birds.

Dr Seuss Explains Computers

If a packet hits a pocket on a socket on a port,

and the bus is interrupted as a very last resort,

and the address of the memory makes your floppy disc abort,

then the socket packet pocket has an error to report.

If your cursor finds a menu item followed by a dash,

and the double-clicking icon puts your window in the trash,

and your data is corrupted 'cause the index does not flash,

then your situation's hopeless and your system's gonna crash!

If the label on the cable on the table at your house,

says the network is connected to the button on your mouse,

but your packets want to tunnel on another protocol,

that's repeatedly rejected by the printer down the hall,

and your screen is all distorted by the side effects of gauss,

so your icons in the window are as wavy as a souse,

then you may as well reboot and go out with a bang,

'cause as sure as I'm a poet, the suckers gonna hang.

When the copy of your floppy's getting sloppy on the disc,

and the micro code instructions cause unnecessary risk,

then you have to flash your memory, and you'll want to RAM your ROM...

Quickly turn off your computer and go and tell your Mom.

What I see on my walks at sunset...

Sunday, May 16, 2010

One of my favorite places to walk just one mile or less from my home at down by the docks on the Clackamas river in front of the big huge Best Western Hotel in town. We meet interestin people and wonderful views. Here I have seen the sea Lions and their pups and We've seen them chase fishermen who have caught salmon and knock over little boats and even mate right there on the docks. Here youc ans ee 3 of them. they are so heavy. Over 1K pounds. They have come as close as 5 feet from me when I sit on the docks watching them swimming in the water. While sitting on our deck in the evening I can actually hear these Sea Lions Bark like loud Dogs.

So gorgeous! And yes, those guys are pretty aggressive about food. They do the same down here -- grabbing fish away from the fishermen. One guy got so fed up with it that he shot one. Luckily, it ended well but who knows how many others don't end so well?
