Like a girl scout...

Sunday, September 27, 2009

It's so funny that I can remember back all those years from when I was 6, 7 and 8 years ond. Wearing my pretty green girl scout uniform with sash and all my pins I earned from doing good duties. And the Girl Scout Promise. "On my honor I will try to domy best, to do my duty to help others, etc"

Well Yesterday Robert and i went up the hill to the Plaza where Albertson's Store is and i peddled in the shops. Payless Shoe Source, Blockbuster Video then Fred Meyers Store, Baskin robbins Ice Cream shop and Starbucks Coffee. Asking thems weetly witha smile on my face, my team shrrt and jacket and "Blind Ambition" buzz cap... "Hi, I'm Debbie. I'm on Portlands Blind Ambition Dragon boat Team. It's America's first ever Visually impaired team and we are ahving a fund raising blindfold Spaghetti dinner in October and I am creating a basket to auction off at the dinner. Would you please be kind enough to donate goods or services to fun my upcoming trip to China?" It was fun. I got a free card also to put in the basket for a free cut, blow dry and style at my friend's Hair Salon. I'm far from done but should ahve actually gottens tarted weeks ago.
I feel just like I did when I was a Girl Scout selling cookies and Calendars.

Good for you, Debbie! You brought back some memories for me --- I was a Brownie troop leader for 3-4 years.

Sorting out 126 cases of cookies among a dozen little girls.........LOL.......glad that's over!

SWEET SEASONS...

Saturday, September 26, 2009

When I lived in Southern California (Lakewood/Long Beach) We ahd only semi cold and warm weather. Not terribly hot and nto terribly cold. more like just spring and Autumn.

Where here in Oregon I ahve been able to enjoy the 4 seasons and watch the weather change from my desk here at the dining room window. You see I have big huge bay windows and down stairs is a big basement Garage so the front of the hosue is level with the street and the back of the house over looks a beautiful Maple tree forrest. To the left I see trees and a rooftop out the window and in front is trees. The trees are thinning and I cans ee light through them. December will bring bitter cold of freezing weather that will mean jsut bare branches. I have beena ble to enjoy spring and noticing buds on these maple trees and the first leaves that approach. Where then the heat of summer held a full head of dark green Maple leaves. I am blessed to be able to still see the colors of the leaves. It may not always be that way but god has been good to me.

I believe 4 seasons are better than 2.

There is only one success - to be able to spend your life in your own
way.

Growing up in Nebraska I did not fully appreciate the beauty of having 4 seasons until we lived in Las Vegas for 3 years. Upon moving back to Nebraska I truly am more aware and appreciate the 4 seasons. Congratulations on all of your progress and looking fabulous at the same time. emoticon

I grew up with four seasons but now am in SO CA. I love it when it is cool with rain but don't miss the snow and really cold. And we had humidity too were I grew up. I can imagine looking out your window and having a bird feeder and enjoying.
Have a lovely day. Oh by the way, I saw a very nice german shepherd walking calmly with her owner on my walk today but I still like the look of a lab better.

Lentils...

Thursday, September 24, 2009

A lot of firsts lately for me. This year i have experienced trying a lotof new vegetables. I Made soup today in the Crockpot using a bag of lentils. I like beans. they have great source of fiber. Rather than use canned stewed tomatoes I chopped up tomatoes and squeezed and added. Some corn and seasonings and brocolli cuts and chicken broth and even a little spinach. I am not fond of spinach but in this it seems to taste pretty good. Lentils are great for protein. When cool I'll freeze in freezer bags and ahve on a cold night.

I also changed my Dr.'s today. I was not getting the right care that I need. My Dr. I had was not experienced. He was a student. I jsut learned about this. he was trying to force me to pay $70.00 for having him sign my medical paper work to receive my guide dog. illing me as a sports related injury. I wasn't told ina dvance that I would ahve to pay. I sought professional advice here and was told to switch Dr's and so i did. I will call tomorrow to make my first appt. with her. it is a she.

Far away in the sunshine are my highest aspirations. I may not reach
them, but I can look up and see the beauty, believe in them and try
to follow where they lead.

It sounds like you're getting ready for winter...I see the colors of the trees starting to change all around. I hope things work out with your new doctor. I have a great PCP - not the one I've been talking about for my ears. He specializes in diabetes care, and he always takes the time to listen, even if he is running late. If your new one doesn't work out, let me know. I'm glad you're enjoying the vegetables!

WOW.........miss assertiveness......I absolutely love it........that's ridiculous paying someone $70 to sign a form, and he wasn't even a movie star!!!!!! Similar thing happened to me with my new Comcast bill....we signed up for $14.99....unlimited phone call.....long distance, call forwarding, caller ID...the whole kit and kaboodle. I got the bill and it said $24.95 for technician fee! I called and told them I was not told there would be this fee, asked to speak to a manager......and it was waived!!!! You do have to speak your mind; all they can tell you is no, and in your case, Debbie......you got someone else! YOU GO GIRL!

The new food tasting sounds good too........you gotta try those squashes......acorn, butternut, hubbard.......yum baked in the oven!

Hugs,
Barbara

Lentils are also a good source of fiber. Very tasty too. I recently had to switch doctors because of my insurance and she's awesome. She actually listens and discusses with me about my care. Good luck with your new doctor.

Lentils are also known for their iron. we all need our iron! And they are tasty too! Good going on firing the doctor. Interview this one, and if it's not what you'd prefer shop again. Having the right doctor is very important! Good work on that.

About my Guide dog training...

I got a call and was asked which breed is your preferrance.

this will be a lifetime compannion. I thought ahrd before answering . In this order is what I would like. Remember... My dog will be a very special guide Dog. It will also obey signed commands. Rather than voice commands my dog will know some ASL.

German Shepherd...

Yellow Lab

Black Lab

Labradoodle

But I already know where I am headed they won't give me a GS.

I will be happy with anything that I get.

They are all BIG dogs and no matter what, will be trained for what you need. Any dog will protect when needed.

I like your answer - any dog you get. It will be a blessing no matter what the breed.

I just love dogs - it would be hard to pick! MANYPOUNDSTOGO here on Spark recently got a Labradoodle for a working dog - she occasionally post pictures of Twilight (the dog). I'm glad things are moving forward, how exciting to get to pick the breed. I think I like the black lab best, but I have a little black Sckipperkee myself. I'm sure you will make the best decision.

I assume all these dogs have been screened for their personalities to do this job. I would like the yellow lab. I am afraid I have known some scary german shepherds and you need to be a strong leader for them to respect you. The labradoodle is really cute but maybe you could use some strength sometime. When you are trained with the dog, wouldn't they switch it wasn't a good match?

German shepards are working dogs, they need discipline and alot of exercise typically police dogs. Labs are hunting dogs, they need also huge amounts of exercise and if possible a chance to use their hunting genes, they love to swim efter ducks when shot.
A poodle is a good companion, they are people dogs and can be taught not to be noisey and go bananas.. If you go to work a working dog is going to get bored stiff and lazy. German shepards and Labs are also many times open to bad hips. Make sure a vet gives a dog your choosing a good once over as a hips disorder see it necessary to put a dog down because of the pain aspect.. It never stops amazing me silly people whom breed from these animals with a tendency to hip problems, it gets sour customers returning pets which is unfair on the animal.. My mom had a pedigee German Shephard, she was only sold this animal as signed a agreement to take him to shows, he was the best of a litter of 6 puppies and won many ribbons in his class.. Sadly he pushed my 87 year old grandma over and bit a women whom came to our door at 11pm. My grandma was alone home with him, so she was terrorifed and almost broke her hip.. He went bananas and bite the backside out of a thiefs jeans the night before whom tired to crawl into my sister bedroom window.. He was still shaken by the blunt attempt to enter our home without knocking.. I was heart broken he was put down, but when a dog bites, no dear mom.. My parents and I were at work..

I vote for yellow lab first- but that is my preference. Labs are the best breed- very sensitive to your feelings, protective but also very friendly. He is so smart and learns words without any effort- just from listening and paying attention to you. He is so easy to take care of- never needs to be brushed or bathed- any dirt just falls off him.
I don't think I will ever be without at least one.
Harry has been my best pal for more than 6 years. I can't imagine how tough it will be to see him go.

In general, dogs are amazing- I am sure you will be happy with the guide dog you get- and he will throughly enrich your life.
